Stiil on Crawl. This is more American than usual. Is that because it's about America. Is that deliberate? Are they having a bit of fun with that. This has a real American Radio sound. Okay,
03: Sex on Fire
Yeah, I feel like this song has been part of my psyche for such a long time now, but it's only been a week. This is a pure classic. i don't think people realise how hard it is to pull a classic like this out of the hat when the whole world is watching you, y'know? Yeah, I was right about the head while you're driving, eh? Guess I'm just about filthy enough. This is such a hot song. Consumed? It seems so obvious now. Being about fire. Not console. it's always gonna be console to me, though. Yeah, you know what, you are still the greatest! Ha! So far, anyway.

04: Use Somebody.
I didn't like this so much on Later. I don't care for it so much now either. Just feels a little low to me. Just a little ordinary. That's okay, I can handle one ordinary song. Just that it could be some other band, slightly lightweight. Okay... Not much else to say. maybe it would grow on me. I feel it has a heart and I think it may be coming from the heart, so I don't hate it. I'll try to open my heart ot it. It just doesn't surprise me in any of the usual ways. I have to be surprised.

05: Manhattan
This has a relatively light touch too, but it's doing some interesting things with those guitars. It's kind of sophisticated, I guess, but yeah, I can hear enough going on in the distance that I would find stuff to explorein this. Yeah, that's interesting, I think that'll be a grower. It transports me to the top of a skyscraper, for some reason. At night time. Kind of warm air blowing...

06: Revelry. Love the title of this. Yeah, interesting things going on with the rhythm line there, that's different. I like that! It's fairly quiet and well-behaved, isn't it? Something different about these lyrics, they're becoming a lot more transparent, aren't they? Kind of in an open, pop music kind of way. That's interesting.Quite short.
07: 17 The bells! The bells! Something almost seventies about this... it goes back in time or something. That's a weird kind of approach. I'm pleased to hear a song that obviously is gonna take some time to work your way into because they are the ones that really pay off big time later. Those backing vocals! Wow. Acerbic guitar taking the edge off the politeness. Yeah, this is a very cool song. it went there.
08: Notion.
Cool title. It's got a chiming kind of feel too. Is this the one someone said had a Christmas feel? This has a real Christmas feel, to me. Christmas number one? Ha! Interesting. Don't really know what I think. That one I'll have to come back to.

09: I want you What a cool rhythm! Love this intro. Slightly Pixies-esque at times. Is it? Reminds me of something. Hittin those pots and pans. This really reminds me of something. Hey paul, hey Paul, let's have a ball, hey Paul, hey Paul, let's have a ball... that's what it is. i think. Was that the Pixies or is that Sonic Youth? Can't even remember. Not a rip off, though. I love this. Oh, yeah, this is the stuff. This is a track i deeply approve of. Yeah, quite playful with that guitar towards the end too, niiiiice.

ARGGHHH! Bought it today, I LOVE with Revelry. I'm sorry for ever doubting you my dear, dear, lovely Kings.
Use Somebody is utter perfection too, I can't even believe it, I've listened to it about fifteen times!!

10: Be Somebody.
This is powerful. That's weird. This was one song and then suddenly it was something else. Strange transition there. Has it gone back to its first song? Yeah, think so. I love the bits you can't get enough. I'm not so sure about the be somebody bits. At the moment. but sometimes the strangenessses are what make it all worthwhile in the end. Going a bit wild now. It has some distant goth influences there in the howling guitar at the end, which i like, a lot.
11: Oh god, how can I be on the last track already? I feel like it's been too short. This is carrying a lot of emotion, I can tell straight away. I think this is going to be a song I'm going to have a long and lasting relationship with. Ha! oh yeah, no doubt of that. Oh, god, it's a wrencher. Uh-huh. I'm too young to feel this old! God. Hell, this is beautiful. I'm too old to feel this young! That's written from the heart. Don't leave me like this. Yeah... it's coming back! Why did it fade like that? What did he sing while we weren't allowed to hear? Hell's bloody bells. Gone all quiet. Jesus. Those notes just ran away from me into the dark and... I feel bereft...
hold on... oh, it's started again from the beginning. i love this album! i do. It got quite emotional at the end and now it's quite emotional at the beginning.
You can't wrench this band out of my cold hard dead hands just yet, world.
Okay?

There are a few topics out there, but I'll say mine right here. I dislike the album. I'm not going into it too much because what's the point? It's just the sloooooow peculiar sound that I don't like and not get yet. Maybe I will some day. I could one day just think, OMG I get it now, I am in love. I'll have to listen to it frequently, but I just don't feel like it. The rawlessness and the lack of 'rock' keeps me skeptical. I don't feel these tears of emotion that many speak of. I like to rock out and get emotional doing just that. I'll always cherish their previous work. I agree completely! And when I started listening to it I was all excited, but as it got further in, from about 17, I was just like what the hell is this? It doesn't have anywhere near as much emotion or that special KOL personality that all there other stuff has, in my opinion. And I don't get why everyone was raving about Cold Desert! Saying it's better than Arizona! No way! But again, just my opinion Basically, you can tell it's rushed But we'll see, I'm sure it'll grow... Firstly, I don't think anything could ever end an album so amazingly as Arizona did, that song is utter perfection, end of. Anyways... I know what you mean about 17, I tired not to think about it, but that song, I mean, what's with it? DULL. It's the My Party of this album, imo. The only thing I can say about this album that is actually better than the others is Caleb's voice. I mean FUCCCCK, could it be any better?!! Overall, I'm happy, I mean, it could have been worse, I like 50% off the bat, give me a little longer and I'll regret saying this. sexxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I like what you said about always cherishing their early work, nothing can touch Y&YM & ASH for, even if this album was an utter crock of shite.

Okay so i listened to it pretty much non stop last night and i have to say i just love it. No reservations about any of it that i had on the first few listens, i just lay there smiling through it all or feeling deep and thoughtful (cold desert). Love Be somebody, notion, i want you (reminds me of tom petty a bit) and frontier city (i really like the high vocal, can't wait to see them perform it live). I still have a (misplaced?) feeling of pride that they've gone so good AGAIN.
The really weird/cool thing, and i hope this makes sense, is that it almost sounds like another band, a cool new band that we've discovered but it's actually the best band in the world and my favourite band ever; that makes me happy. - It's like seeing someone across the room and thinking 'yeah, they're really hot' then they come closer and it's your other half.
Hope that makes sense and some feel similar.

I love it. I think it has so much emotion and honesty about it, and you can really tell how talented they've all become, musically. I guess that's what bothers people, that the rawness is gone, but I like it. I can't compare it to ASH or YAYM 'cause they're all great albums but in different ways.

just sat and listened to the whole album from start to finish.
i do like it, and i dare say as it hear it more ill love it.
the album has got its "anthem" this, i think, being sex on fire.
YAYM had mollys chambers, ASAH had the bucket and BOTT had on call / arizona.
but what i think its missing is that really big track for the live shows, the one that makes the crowd go mental.
YAYM had spiral staircase, ASAH had four kicks and BOTT had black thumbnail.
or, could it be "use somebody"?
its a bit mkore subtle but could that be the one to get the front moshing??
your thoughts

Ok I’ve had the album since Friday AND at first when I played it in its entirety I was SOOO disappointed. I was actually a little angry at the band for making an album that removed all the things that made me fall in love with their music in the first place – the rawness, cheekiness, Caleb’s southern voice, wham-bam-thank-you-mam attitude, their unique kick-ass sound. But after listening to it pretty much everyday…I have totally fallen in love with most of it (except 17 and Notion for now). I totally had to build myself a bridge and get over the fact that it’s not YAYM, ASH or BOTT and nor should I compare it to those albums. I definitely appreciate this album for completely different reasons to the other 3 - it’s more heartfelt, sincere and definitely mature sounding – there is even a sophisticated sexiness to it. I feel this album is about Caleb and the musical focus is - his voice…unlike the other albums where the guitar, bass or drums were really driving the songs and you could hear each instrument in each song. I think his voice tends to overpower some of the songs and the instruments do get a little lost and diluted (but I am being biased due to the fact that I do miss Jared and Matt’s kick ass riffs!!) I have to admit there are some great new sounds from Jared and Matt…loving the bass in Crawl and Matt’s new haunting guitar sounds especially in Closer and Be Somebody (LOVE IT), a few more upbeat songs wouldn’t go astray. So OBNT has totally won me over…it’s not a rockin’ album but is a freaking cool album. It’s up there with the others but it stands on its own. Funnily, a lot of people have made comment that it’s not as good as the other 3 albums, but if this album is considered crap (in KOL standards) then even at their worst KOL still kick every other band out of the FREAKING PARK!!! No comparison. My fav songs so far: Closer (such a haunting sexy sound), Crawl (love the bass in this), SOF (classic - self explanatory), Manhattan (the melody is really beautiful), I want you (drinkinthepark said it perfectly on this thread earlier…it has an old sound but polished), Be Somebody (my fave…guitar is haunting and love Nates drumming – almost Milk-esq. Love the total change in tempo towards the end) Just on the topic of the rest of the world FINALLY waking up and catching up to us H.A’s, I think what annoys most of us is that KOL was all our cool little secret and I am sure we all only shared them with those whom we knew would appreciated them for the same reasons we did….not just cause of their hotness or etc (well OK the hotness factor is a bonus for all us pervs - meow). Now the whole world is jumping on the bandwagon and our little secret is no more…I hope they recognise them not only for OBTN but for the likes of Spiral Staircase, O’Dusty, Wasted Time, Trani, 4 Kicks, The Bucket, Arizona etc, etc…as for peeps who will only like them for OBTN I personally think they wont appreciate the others albums as much – I don’t think they will get them…which is really sad cause they are legendary and they FARKING ROCK!! PS sorry for the essay
