Okay, I have to get something off my chest. I read and hear over and over again how KOL doesn't understand why they are suddenly breaking out over here in the States with SOF and not any of their earlier, better stuff. The answer isn't because Americans have awful taste in music and didn't like your earlier music....it's because WE NEVER HEARD IT!!!
The fact that you recieved practically zero airplay with your earlier stuff, and the fact that you weren't on SNL, and the fact that you were never nominated for a Grammy is because YOUR RECORD COMPANY DIDN'T PROMOTE YOU PROPERLY OVER HERE IN THE STATES!!
There are thousands of us fans who have loved you from the beginning and for years have never understood why your record company wasn't promoting you better over here in America and getting you airplay. I mean, take a look at your website - until recently it was crap! And don't get me started on your fan club.
I remember a few years back I sent an email to your PR guy asking if you ever planned on releasing a live DVD of your concerts. His response? "Um, no. No we don't." Nice, huh? That's your PR guy? That's the guy in charge of promoting you?
So please, don't blame us American fans anymore for your lack of popularity over here.....get on your record company and raise some hell!!!!
Love,
Chichi

"YOUR RECORD COMPANY DIDN'T PROMOTE YOU PROPERLY OVER HERE IN THE STATES!!"
Ha, I've said that for 5 years now. I hope they get more notoriety after the MSG gig and the Grammy awards. They should have performed at the Grammys.

Chichi - you're on my karma list!
I agree that their 'people' can't have tried hard enough. (or spent enough of the money they were raking in from the kings overseas earnings)
(not that it's anything to do with me, living as I do in the UK - whoops!)

Well the real problem is that mainstream American radio is crap. You can't rely on it to find out about good music out there. I personally never listen to mainstream radio! We're lucky enough to have a public radio station in my city which plays the Kings all the time (and have for several years now). I'm constantly finding out about new artists I wouldn't have known about otherwise thanks to them. There's a ton of ways to find out about good music...pandora, youtube, myspace, music mags...people who didn't hear about the Kings before now have noone to blame but themselves!! lol

^^I disagree. Not everyone is into pandora, youtube, myspace and music mags or has the time to surf the internet all day looking for new music. Lots of people are, however, into listening to the radio.

I stand by my statement. Someone who only has time to listen to the radio can listen to a number of public radio stations or stations overseas online!

Not if they're not sitting in front of a computer 24/7

and they can't pick up a mag? Log onto ANY music forum out there? All I'm saying is that there are a ton of other ways to find out about music, not just radio (thank God). If someone chooses just to rely on radio, fine...but it's their own fault if they don't hear about all the great bands out there.

Well I don't live in America so I can't really comment on this, but I agree with chichi. I think great bands are those that you stumble across, not ones that you actively go out and seek. Some people don't have the time or whatever to sieve through magazines or websites. I've found all my favourite bands (including KOL, while flicking through the tv) by pure accident. But like I said I don't live in the US so yeah!

Maybe I have the POV I do because I am one of those people that actively seeks out new music. I assumed anyone who really loves music does the same (why wouldn't they?). But maybe I'm wrong.. But I don't see how anyone could disagree with the statement that you can't rely on mainstream radio for GOOD music. That's a fact, plain and simple!

How do you know you like a band's music by reading about them? I agree the internet is a great way to hear about new music.....but so is radio airplay. KOL did not hit it big until they started playing SOF on the radio. Record companies - along with radio stations - have a lot to do with what songs get played on the radio. They deserved to hit it big long before now, and I think the reason they didn't was because their record company failed to get them on the radio. Ironically, my computer time is up...I have things to do now.....and none of them involve sitting in front of a computer trying to hear new music!

If an author in a mag does a good job of describing the music, you can get a feel for whether it's a band you'd enjoy. And often they compare their sound to other bands...and if those bands are ones you like, then you may enjoy that band as well! Of course you won't actually KNOW if you'll like them until you listen to them...but you may not have given them a chance if you hadn't heard of them in the first place...in the mag. Make sense?
By the way, Nathan recently said in an interview pretty much the same thing I just did when asked why they haven't been popular in the states, lol

Chairlover - I'm not getting into a disagreement with you - I agree with some of what you say to an extent However, Chichi is right in that some people are not in a position to spend a lot of time looking for new music, and not everyone has ready internet access. I knew about the kings 5 years ago because I live in the UK, not because I had the time to spend reading blogs and whiling away my time on youtube. With kids to put shoes on I didn't have money to spend on magazines either. In fact, I didn't have ready internet access then. I'm an example of someone who loves music, but can't go hunting around for it as much as I would like, I can't be the only one. It is easy to view things from our own perspective, but any band that is not getting widespread radio play in any country is handicapped in that country. It is the record companies job to make it happen. I was lucky - I live in the UK. Oh - and like chichi I've got to stop being on the computer now because of 'real life', sorry!

I'm not American either so perhaps I am missing the whole emotional attachement to the KOL/America debate but I've often heard Nathan especially explaining the reason for their lack of popularity thus far in America as a lack of airplay rather than a lack of taste!!
I am basing this on memory of intervews etc but I am open to being corrected!!

I agree with you wholeheartedly chichi!! I first heard of Kings of Leon back in 2004 when I saw the video for The Bucket being played on MTV at 3 or 4 in the morning.. I mean how many people are up that late that can generate mass success overnight?? Other than that airplay here in the US has been sparse over the years..I luckily became a fan from that moment on.. I also have to say that while living in my own little KoL bubble (and by bubble I mean bubble.. none of my friends were into them and I never found HA until recently) for the past couple of years, I didn't even know that KoL was coming out with OBTN or that they released SOF as a single until I heard SOF on the radio last summer.. you can only imagine the shock on my face when I heard KoL on the radio!! I also must agree with the point made that it is better when you happen to just stumble upon a new band that you then come to love, instead of going out and searching for a band based on what reviews are said about them.. When you stumble upon a band, you remember where you were, how you felt and best of all can make a decision for yourself about a band and their music. Karma chichi!!!

Its sounds snobby but alot of my friends in the US already knew who KOL were. They are mostly Artists, Fashion students, designers and musicians. I guess it just took time for the general public to catch on. Now they're mainstream, alot of my freinds have turned off but I'm KOL forerver!!
