i love how in knocked up caleb is almost whispering these desires and longings and dreams he has until someone questions him (the doctor) and then the song gets all, 'yeah, actually. i am!' attitudey and then it builds and builds almost more from the thought that he can't have it rather than he wants to. it's so 'shush' at the begining then wham, yes thank you i can have what i like how dare you for even questioning me! love that" he seems to get more inspired by the thought even as he sings it, just cause someones telling him he can't .. (and here's the tongue in cheek but do kinda mean it part of the post) he knows it's gonna be difficult so he starts wailing and thinking twice but still that's pretty sure that's what he means. I love how you think I think Jared's bass is amazing in Cold Desert...in fact, the whole of Cold Desert is amazing, it's got this magical, eerie, quiet about it, yet it builds and builds with those incredible lyrics...and then, just when you think it's over, it fades back in again. It's so inventive. I think that's one thing I really appreciate about OBTN, whenever I go on youtube videos from back in 2003/4, people always comment saying "go back to this..sell outs.." "KOL, back when they didn't suck.." etc. People are so willing to discard a brilliant album because of the success they had with it, OBTN may not be as raw or sleazy as YAYM and ASH, but it has a sweeping, ethereal quality that many bands would envy. Tracks like Cold Desert, Closer, Manhattan and Revelry all have a life of their own, and show just how varied the talents of the Kings are...

I love what you just said about OBTN, I've been a fan since pretty much the beginning but I love OBTN. It might not be what everyone wanted but it's a KOL album in its own right and by god it's got something good about it.

absolutely. i still, in spite of some of the qualms i have with obtn, think it's a brave, skilled album and i'm glad it's out there. to show what they can do, how they can play! they've stretched themselves and i, in all honesty, respect them for that. whatever the motivation behind it was they've still done it brilliantly and that's that. there are some absolutely breath taking tracks and i can't see it in any way being some kind of sell out album cause they've put too much of themselves into creating something that they wanted to create. excuse me if i'm wrong but doesn't the meaning of sell out imply producing something for somebody else, or doing it cause you've 'been told to'?

Exactly whiskers!!! KOL could never "sell out". They care too much about what they're doing and the fans that support them. The only reason people cry "sell out" is because they're doing the only thing they haven't done so far - succeed in the mainstream. I think KOL will always be something of an underdog band, they'll never be the BIGGEST thing ever. They're too grounded and simply awesome to just sell their talent to the highest bidder, doing anything they think will make the world listen and the pennies roll in. They've wanted success, and now they're starting to get it. This doesn't change them in any way, and as for the sound of OBTN... can anyone really expect anyone to stay the same? Life doesn't work like that! If everyone stayed the same, you'd never learn anything or experience anything that mattered! KOL are doing just fine the way they are, and anyone who points the accusatory finger is flawed in their own love for this band. *Ahem* Sorry about that. I just love these boys xxx

I really can't think of another train-related joke to say, so I'll just say thanks! Hahaha no problem Honestly though, it shakes my cage when people get down on OBTN. It's a magnificent piece of art and just listening to all of the emotions and intricacies in the music, you can tell KOL put all of their attention and personal feeling into it. Just as I'm typing now, Cold Desert has come on and it's sending shivers down my spine. The whole album is flawless from start to finish, and just because it's not as raw as their early stuff doesn't mean they didn't pour every ounce of sadness, joy and honesty into it. I think it's a fantastic record and anyone who's having doubts about it should put it on and just listen to it as a piece of music, not as "KOL's latest album that's different from their others". You know what I mean? If you forgot it was KOL and just sat in a dark room with your headphones on... the music might reach you in a different way xxx

i love the line in that 'i'm on the corner waiting for a light to come that's when i know that you're alone'
wow. when i got that line i was so shook by it. it's not a nice line, you need one of those big words to describe it like, profound.

Yeah it's bloody amazing. I don't think there are enough words to describe the range of emotions KOL's music makes me feel xxx

Haha, don't worry about it...I'm Jess...I'm aware I should have picked a better username that wasn't so...aggressive xD Razz, you're completely right about OBTN, the emotions in their are so mixed and startling, you go from doing the Tennessee head-bop to crawl ( ) to weeping at Cold Desert...I don't think there's many bands on earth that could do that in 11 songs...

wasn't sure where to post this but i thought it was really interesting.. from rolling stone..
"Molly's Chambers" The dirty, flirty riff-chugging mess of a debut single that got the Followill boys dubbed the "Southern Strokes" (ugh). They had it, we wanted it. Fire up the General Lee.
"Happy Alone" Their 2003 debut Youth and Young Manhood's bounciest tune. Caleb babbles about dancing around in your high heels and cherry lipstick and Lord knows what else as he conjures the spirit of Jerry Lee Lewis' heathen boogie and the Velvet Underground's depraved punk rock. Great gutbucket guitar solo too.
"Trani" A heartwarming codeine-mouthed tale of hick-boy hookers hanging around the Greyhound Station going down on whoever's got a bump of coke and a smoke — not exactly Newt Gingrich's vision of life in the New South. The Exile On Main Street guitars and slow-burning swagger make it menacing. Caleb's empathetic singing makes it kinda tender.
"The Bucket" On the band's 2005 Aha Shake Heartbreak, Caleb's singing matured (or regressed, depends on your perspective) into an unintelligible moonshine 'n' madness grumble that sounded like he got up every morning and poured axel grease on his pancakes. This rumbling ramble tamble jam is an excellent case in point.
"King of the Rodeo" Aha Shake Heartbreak's ode to a "cowgirl king of the rodeo" is one of their punchiest blurts of Dixie new wave — it's wound tighter than a goose's ass and it flips and twists like a possum in the bathtub. A masterstroke of Southern Strokesness.
Knocked Up" The band's great 2007 record Because of the Times opened with the story of Seth Rogen and Kathryn Heigl as seen through the eyes off two small-town fuck-ups on a cannonball run away from the scolding parents and judging world that's trying to tear them apart. It's seven minutes long, the guitars explode like backfiring V8 engines and when Caleb sings "I don't care what no one says we're gonna have a bay-bee" he's a perfect mix of righteous outlaw and proud pappy.
"Charmer" Pixies-style bass wonder-thud makes nooky with saturation strike guitar and Caleb screeches like he's getting goosed by the Beast Master himself. When he sings "she's always looking at me" about the West Virginia lass who's crushed his soul he sounds borderline psychotic and borderline awesome too.
"On Call" Atmospheric guitar churn, wham-bam drum thump and Caleb yowling with all the sweetness a real man can stomach about how he's "on call" for your affection like some hillbilly love doctor.
"Sex On Fire" The single from last year's Only by the Night is a lithe, liquid shot of Southern grunge ecstasy. Note: the phrase "hey, your sex is on fire" probably works for these dudes but don't try it at next time your closing the deal on some booze-loosened accounts manager at Buffalo Wild Wings.
"Crawl" Only By the Night pumps their sound into stadium rock. This sticky-grooved rocker suggests Pearl Jam as apocalyptic fire-breathers, raining holy wrath down on the "crucified USA."

i feel kinda ashamed of myself that i am writing more about the guitars and vocals than i am about the rhythm section. i feel wrong and dirty. buhhh *shivers*
True Love Way encourages speeding. i put it on a mix cd i made for my dear mamaaaa and when we go driving and this song comes on i always tend to - clearly, without realising or intentionally meaning to - go at least 5mph faster. which don't sound a lot but 5mph can quickly turn into 15mph ... that's what you got to remember.

dirty bird (nice to see you btw) you are wrong and dirty to neglect the rhythm section. I'm getting excited about the next album. I know I should be more mature than that, it's like a kid getting excited about Christmas in June, but there we are.
