Anyone else really appreciating Because of the times after this record? mcfearless, Black Thumbnail, Charmer, Camaro sound so good compared to some of the songs on here. Yes!!! And to that list I'd add Arizona, The Runner, Fans, Trunk, and Knocked Up. Many of the tracks on OBTN pale in comparison. BOTT was my favourite album of 2007. Just can't say the same about OBTN ... Sorry but Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Baby 81 was the best album of of 2007. This thread is depressing it's as if someone has died but then I suppose they have the KOL of old and now we have to decide if we like this reborn version. Unfortunately I find it hard to comment on the album 'cause after 1 listen I haven't been able to put it on again and KOL are the most played on my ipod! I think that says a lot.

I love the majority of songs.
cold desert, closer, sex on fire, revelry and manhattan are all amazing in my opinion.
I love the new sounds on some of the tracks, the wailing noises in 'closer' and 'cold desert' i absolutely adore.
Manhattan aswell, perfect song to dance to, it's amazing.
I still love the older stuff, but If I wan't to listen to some raw guitar tracks then i'll listen to YAYM, they're amazing songs, but they've been done and it's time to evolve.
OBTN is not my favourite album, but I'm in love with the honesty of it all
Caleb always surprises me with his lyrics

I love the album. The songs aren't initially quite as catchy as their older songs, but I enjoyed the challenge of having to listen to them several times before "getting" them. This album is much more mature and it's great that they're evolving. I'm hoping the harder rock sound isn't gone for good...maybe they'll get back to their "roots" on the next album..but for now I'm enjoying a feel for their softer side. I was shocked to read that some people didn't like Notion at first...by far my favorite song on the album! Probably the best song I've heard all year, from anyone, bar none. But to each their own, right?

oh and I want to add that Caleb's voice is AMAZING on this album. Especially in 'Closer'. He is singing with all his might. He's always sounded great, but he really put his HEART in this one. and one more thing: for those of you who are disappointed...pay attention to the posts in here and see how many people were disappointed at first but eventually came around. This is NOT an "instantly love it" album like the other 3, but it's only because it's more complex and layered. Keep listening. You may be surprised!

OBTN didn't grab me right away, though I admit to loving 'Crawl' and 'Manhattan' when those songs were debuted this past June. I absolutely love it now and am constantly replaying it over and over again. Though, seeing KOL live next week might have something to do with that :-)

I love how everybody is saying they are maturing as a band. If you say so. I call it rushing an album. Besides closer the rest are average b-sides at best. It seems like alot of the Kings fans are more concerned with how they dress than the music. I know this because everyday there will be 20 peaople viewing the band and only 2 viewing the music on this board alone.

Ok, I'll add my two cents ... I was a bit disappointed for the first couple days after getting the CD, mainly because I love BOTT so much and was expecting this one to be the same quantum leap forward that BOTT had been. To me at least, it sounded like they were playing it safe with OBTN. But then a friend suggested I listen to it late at night, with the lights off and headphones on. This made all the difference!! The guitar lines some fans have complained about not being on the record are there, you just need to listen carefully with a decent set of headphones. Now I get it, and am loving it more with every listen. Don't think it's a coincidence they named it 'Only By the Night'. Because it's the kind of record meant to be listened to at night. Just like BOTT was/is the perfect record to listen to in the car on long road trips. Genius!! I couldn't agree more. BOTT was such a special album for me last year, although it took ALOT of listens to fully appreciate it. So on listening to OBTN for the first time i wasn't too disappointed because I prefer it if an album takes at least 3 listens to start to 'get'. My full appreciation happened whilst listening on my Ipod (with good headphones!) at 4am in the dark after consuming a fair few vodka sodas. The music just popped, Calebs voice was heart melting, Nathans drums (especially on Be Somewhere) are outstanding, Jareds bass made my brain pound and Matts guitar....well....how he has grown since YAYM. So it's not as amazing as BOTT but I dont mind cause it's still KOL and still a great album.

I have realiesed that its brilliant to have a more mellow sounding album from KOL, now pretty much the whole spectrum of emotions are covered from angry to happy and loved up to broken hearted and all those in between and around about!!
After reading Jareds comment about being embarassed by their older stuff I started listening to OBTN in a different way and it is definately a more mature album, IMO crawl is their most mature tune, musically speaking!

I might be on my own with this opinion, but I really like the new album. It's one of the few cd's that I can play without skipping songs. Of course YAYM and AHA are great too, but they don't give me the same... content feeling that BOTT and OBTN give me. I mean, it's fun to listen to, let's say, California waiting. But it's not the same as listening to Cold desert and having tears in your eyes because it's so beautiful. But hey, that's just my opinion!

It was their music that first attracted me to KOL. Of course, it's a major bonus that they're all so easy on the eyes Two words come to mind when listening to OBTN: Melodic Maturity

I really don't like it when people make assumptions like that though, just because we throw the occasional comment about their hotness, people think that there's no possible way of a person's mind registering two separate good things...

I think someone mentioned further up about appreciating BOTT alot more as a result of this record. Ive already mentioned I love the new sounds on many of the tracks, and Calebs great singing.
I do agree however. after listening to some songs on OBTN, there's nothing better then putting 'On Call' on afterwards, I just love the song.
Not there strongest record in my opinion but I do like the evolving sound.

Hello, i'm a KOL fan to the end since the ASH era and i love the new album.
Fuck yes it's different. I see this album changing things here in america, and i'm all for them making it to the top. It needs to happen.

I absolutely love this album, in my opinion it is the best one yet.
My favourite song is Cold Desert, closely followed by Revelry.

Oh ya definately!! Obviously if we find any of the band attractive and have a bit of fun talking about that then we couldnt possibly be fans. Moreover, it is very likely that we are musically ignorant idiots!! I bow down to those real fans who are in it for the music cause I sure as hell am clearly not!!! *tongue firmly in cheek btw* To anyone else who wants to judge the level of anyones fan status on this forum:
