Rosey, You have managed to get your point across about your dislike of the album without using the phrase 'sold out' so i don't think many people can diss you for this, your opinion.
It is a shame so many people are disappointed but there seems to be a lot of theorising and positivity that they'll get back to what people like next time or eventually.
And for those who don't like it at least there are 3 other great albums for you to listen to...right?

haha no! i don't think they have "sold out" - that term gets thrown around too loosely!
i just think our musical preferences are moving in diff directions - only on this album, that is!
i think when you respect a band a lot, which i do in terms of KOL, you have a trust that they wont sell out. i trust them. theyre not stupid. they never began making music as a means of topping the charts, so i know thats not their motive. therefore i can't call the album a sell out lp
EDIT* - man, those 3 lps changed my life. i dont know how, but nothing will ever take away from them . i will always listen to those albums - forever!

Nicely said hun. I too trust them, implicitly(spl). Great way of looking at it. If only others had so much faith.

yerr, you know its trust when u dont like an album but can remain optimistic. it really is interesting how theres an array of perspectives -- although i have my opinion, and i don't agree with some others, i think its amazing how people hold differing opinions. but i guess thats just it aye - opinions are like arseholes - everyone has one!

After a few listens in the car with my wife she turned around and said "It has alot of slow songs on it" A ton of listens in now and i still this its ok at best. Some decent songs on it but it sounds like a BOTT B-Sides Album in the main. My wife is right its very very very slow, nothing "Rocks" at all. I don't think they've sold out at all by the way! I just think this is not a great peice of work by them. I think the new production team may like twiddling knobs far too much (No innuendo mean't ) I find it so hard deep inside of me to understand how loads of people, like me who've listen to KOL from the begining. Fell in love with that Rambunchious rabble they made, can actually like this album. Its got nothing on the 3 previous efforts at all. Its not fit to wipe the other 3 records backsides really. Course you have to evolve, we all agree KOL are infact a "ROCK" band? Yes? If you agree can you please tell me where the rocking is on this album? "Its got alot of slow songs on it" Yep missus your right.

Ok, I'll add my two cents ... I was a bit disappointed for the first couple days after getting the CD, mainly because I love BOTT so much and was expecting this one to be the same quantum leap forward that BOTT had been. To me at least, it sounded like they were playing it safe with OBTN. But then a friend suggested I listen to it late at night, with the lights off and headphones on. This made all the difference!! The guitar lines some fans have complained about not being on the record are there, you just need to listen carefully with a decent set of headphones. Now I get it, and am loving it more with every listen. Don't think it's a coincidence they named it 'Only By the Night'. Because it's the kind of record meant to be listened to at night. Just like BOTT was/is the perfect record to listen to in the car on long road trips. Genius!!

i listened to all the KOL songs on shuffle yesterday and it's almost shocking to go from a YAYM/ASH song to a OBTN song.
Based on interviews I've read with the Followills, I get the feeling that they thought they were clueless and talentless when recording the earlier stuff, when in reality the early stuff is genius because of their lack of experience.
Now that they've toured with different bands ect, they can never go back to that raw energy they had before. It's like losing your virginity, you can never get it back. So they decided to go with a more polished, more produced sound and that's ok with me.
OBTN is beautiful, it's just not unique like YAYM is.
They're still one of the best things that's ever happened to music. And I look forward to more records, in any way they chose to make 'em.

the album is boring, and i have listened to it more than 10 times, I just cant get into it, but it looks like it will be a commercial hit, with lots of new 12 year old fans lol. .. doubt we will ever see the rockin kol again...
but having said that they deserve their success.

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I think about OBTN. It hasn't swept me off my feet immeadiately, but then neither did BOTT - now I love nearly all of it. (and I like what I don't love). I would agree that it is a beautiful album, though I don't much like 17! I relate a lot to what you are saying and am also looking forward to more records in anyway they choose to make them. One thing I keep thinking over is that what has consistently shone through in all the albums is talent. A real natural love and affinity for music and an ability to communicate through music that relies a lot on instinct, even now I think. In YAYM days I'm thinking that it was so obvious because mostly they were just learning to play their instruments and were only begining to find out about music. (And wasn't it great ?) Well the talent's still there, and my haven't the skills grown and so I know I still have faith and a lot of love. As to the energy - may be it won't be raw again in the same way, but a girl can hope!!

I guess I have to say that this is my least favourite album from kol. i like most of the songs, but theres only really manhattan, closer and cold desert that i can listen to more than once in one sitting. None of the songs make me wanna throw myself around the room. I think its good that they are trying a new sound but i think they would be better to go back to more ash kinda sounds. What upsets me the most, is that it seems like KOL feel they have had to do this to get recognition or to sound good in a stadium. I am loyal to the kings and always will be they have had such an impact on my life. But im just hoping that the next album excites me more, and inspires me more

And to that list I'd add Arizona, The Runner, Fans, Trunk, and Knocked Up. Many of the tracks on OBTN pale in comparison. BOTT was my favourite album of 2007. Just can't say the same about OBTN ...

I think OBTN my least favourite album too but that doesnt mean its a bad album, it has 2 or 3 songs I'm not crazy about (yet at least) but I still love it!

I totally agree, its definately not my fave album but i can still see it for what it is a beautiful set of songs, hell it aint no ASH or YAYM but as Zane Lowe put it on Gonzo he said he was glad they didnt make those kinds of albums again because you could never improve on those songs as they were brilliant and i can completely agree, a lot of bands try to recreate their early albums to get that 'original' sound back (oasis anyone??) and it just doesnt work. I have nothing but respect for KOL and they way they look at making new albums and as ive always said if you dont like OBTN you can look forward to what they are going to bring out next and you will always have 3 other class albums to listen to!

This album is 2 stars out of 4 at best. I liked Caleb alot better when i couldn't understand his lyrics. Lyrically this album is beyond weak. I really like closer but it's all down hill from there. I don't understand all the love for cold desert. It's a bad Modest Mouse ripoff(listen to the intro). With that said they are still a great live band and I look forward to seeing them in Beantown. As far as selling out they most certainly have but who hasn't.
