I thought it was "I'm ready" or maybe "I'm ready now", not sure. But yeah, I love the album. Not my favourite KOL album but it's a really relaxing listen, which is what I could do with after the past few stress-filled days. i completely agree, it's really chill. which is good because now there's a kings of leon album for any mood.

I love the kings of leon more than life itself. Every day that brought me closer to the release was like Christmas morning. "ONLY 15 MORE DAYS" kinda stuff.
I feel so let down it's insane. This isn't the KOL i fell in love with. This is just some mainstream sounding band that maybe NOW america will finally fall in love with. (don't hate - im from virginia in the good old us of a)
What happened? NOTHING captures my attention. When you play red morning light... you flip a SHIT cause you realize WHOA THIS SONG IS KICKASS!
NOTHING on only by the night does that.
caleb, bless his heart, IS trying to sound i guess a little more mature and deep.
starting an album with the lyrics "stranded in the spooky town"
just made a little part of me die.
dont get me wrong- the music is good, but it's just not great. none of these songs i want to repeat over and over again.
and WHERE did all the sex go?!?! sure we've got sex on fire but i dont want BLATANT i want stuff like SOFT where it's just a delicious little innuendo. "ohh your sex is on fire" doesnt do HALF the stuff as "i pop myself in yoooo bodyyyy" could do.
and cursing? the most i get is a "dammit" or something. im NOT saying that "cursing and sex make an album!" because obviously it doesnt... but there's just no swag to the music anymore.
the songs don't change tempo... they just kinda stay dull the whole way through- no matter how well they are playing or how many new notes caleb is hitting... it just falls FLAT.
i feel like such a jerk writing all this about kings of leon because i adore them so much... but this is my interpretation of only by the night.
the attempt to sound really big and arena like just sucked all the soul out of the music. for all the hype caleb gave about the honesty of cold desert.... i think that song has NOTHING on arizona.
"you know im a dancing machine"
now that's a freaking cringe-worthly line there.
what happened, kings of leon? what the hell happened?

AND another thing.
the song "17"
pretty much the opening sounds like some really lame "christmas with paul mccartney at rockefeller plaza!" ya know... like "c'mon guysss! clap your hands! we're about to light the tree!" DING DING RING THE BELLS SLOWLYYYY.
"oh she's only seventeennnnn"
so now we're saying she whines and whines and whines or something?
i think we already hand some DECENT lyrics along with the age 17. SHE'S SEVENTEEN BUT I DONE WENT AND PLUM FORGOT IT
dayuuuuum!!
where's the "hot diggity damn" factor on this album?
it sure as HELL isnt in revelry...
so this album IS like... "chiller"
not one song makes me wanna dance. everyone plays at like the exact same time... there are no decent solos... freaking listen to the beginning of ragoo and you just wanna DIE it's so insanely groovable.
halfway through "be somebody" im just like okay is this over yet?
gosh i could cry.
use somebody is a good song, i genuinely like it.
i was praying that "crawl" and "sex on fire" were like... the duds on the album. kinda shocked me when i realized they were some of the better songs.
alright. that's enough outta me.
it's just my opinionnn
the opinion of someone LET DOWN
(and hanggggggin aroundddddd)

I'm in tears because this new album is terrible.
I don't care what anyone tries to tell me that they're just experimenting or it's just different and I need to get used to it.
This band is my favorite thing in the entire world They mean everything to me
And they've sold out.
And I'm sobbing.

This band is my favorite thing in the entire world They mean everything to me And they've sold out. And I'm sobbing. Are these people nuts? The record is awesome. It ebbs and flows, starts with an eerie and ethereal sound, goes into straight ahead rock, and then has its inspirational and heartfelt moments as well. I can't wait to see the songs in concert (October 17th and 18th) and see Cold Desert mixed in with Knocked Up, Trani, King of the Rodeo, and California Waiting. I have loved these guys since early 2003 when the EP came out. This album furthers my belief in the band and gives me another great set of tunes to listen to endlessly. Long live the Kings.

I think that maybe i'm not as big of a kings of leon fan as some people here are. Sure the albums different. I dont think its anything life shattering though.
I think they're giving us a choice. Either you go with it or poor you.

i thought it sounded like he was singing "im ready" seems to fit with the song I got "go let it out" from the live performances i've watched. But i'm ready now does fit the song better. If it was "go let it out" it could be referring to letting the personal demons out keeping from loving someone. something to that effect?

I have mixed feelings about the new album...When I first heard it, I was so bummed out and disappointed. Only "Manhattan" and "Use Somebody" really stuck out to me, and I thought "Crawl," "Sex On Fire," and "Revelry" were okay. "Notion, "Be Somebody," and "Cold Desert" didn't stick out to me at all and just seemed a tad dull, and I absolutely hated "Closer," "I Want You," and "17."
When I first bought Because Of The Times, I was nervous that I wouldn't like it. But the moment I heard "Knocked Up," I knew it was going to be my favorite album of the year. Unfortunately, that wasn't what happened this time around with Only By The Night. Instead, the second I heard "Closer"'s synthy opening, my heart sank and I cringed because it reminded me a lot of the beginning of "This Is Why I'm Hot."
HOWEVER.
This album has grown on me a lot since that depressing first listen. It is still my least favorite album KOL have put out, but it is nonetheless a good album. One of the things I've always loved about Kings of Leon is their fearless exploration of sound and how their work evolves with each album. There are precious few bands that do that, and you have to admire an artist for having the guts to experiment. Every band has to grow up, and seeing as this is a band that been putting out albums since 2002, you can't expect them to be as raw as they were 6 years ago. True, I do miss the rowdiness of songs like "Spiral Staircase," "Four Kicks," and "Trani," and the sleazebag groove of "Wasted Time," "Taper Jean Girl" and "Soft," and yeah, I really miss Caleb's mumbled, drawling vocals. But at the same time, I'm actually glad that they've progressed the way they have. The melodies seen on songs like "Use Somebody," and "Revelry" soar in a way that seem to take the listener's hearts to the heights the songs reach, and I get chills every time Caleb hits that one note in "Manhattan"–that single solitary moment is absolutely perfect! I love the bass on "Be Somebody," as well as the song's scuffly, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-esq ending, and the emotion and honesty in "Cold Desert" is absolutely beautiful. And it's a fantastic album to listen to while driving–Seriously, there is nothing like zooming down the freeway late at night with the windows rolled down and "Sex On Fire" blasting.
In the end, I think Only By The Night is definitely a grower sort of album. It rubbed me the wrong way on my first couple of listens, but after awhile, I came to realize that it is overall a very good album. Although I still don't particularly like "Closer," "17," or "I Want You." I need a bit more time to really get into those. While it may not have the raw shuffle of their earlier work, what matters is that they did still put out those albums and they do still play those songs at their shows–And they do a damn good job too! I swear, their live performances seem to get more and more outstanding.

How can people still say they've sold out when they have stated on a number of occasions that they had control over the production and this is what they have always wanted to sound like and they are proud with what they've done?
Do those who think they've sold out think they are bullshitting too? I'm not having a go i am genuinelly interested in your opinions.
I will reiterate though that i love the album. I do hope they use less synthy stuff next time but i don't think it'll affect any live performances. What i've heard live so far is pretty amazing. I thought i might be disappointed as the best songs seemed to have been given us pre release but no....i'm still happy.

I know it reminds me of something, but i just can't put my finger on it This is what it reminded me of: PIXIES _ GIGANTICI don't think it's that similar, just slightly. Yes! Agreed. The riffs sound quite like Caleb's choruses. youlooklovely, you nailed it. So motherf*ing hard. I have some exalting for ya girl. When I'm restored.

im perfectly willing to listen and respect peoples opinions, but wen people start calling the kings of leon, the greatest band on the planet, "sell outs" for a change of sound in their music, i will quite happily put my fundamentalist/dictator hat firmly on and tell them wat i think.

It seems this album is either a complete hit or miss with most people...
For me it's more like I love a song, I skip a song. A lot of songs I like and a couple I don't like. But that's OKAY. If not everyone likes it... then I guess that means they aren't trying to please everyone. If everybody was like "OH MY GOD this is the best album ever!" then I think we'd be in trouble. There are people who don't like the youth and young manhood days, and obviously (quite obviously) there are people who aren't feelin only by the night. The point is you're bound to have a divided reception when you change your sound- which is what they did... and props to them for going balls to the wall and making this record exactly the way they wanted it. If they're changing their sound, so be it. Who knows what the next album will be like... but I'm sure everyone will be listening to it to see how they've evolved yet again- and that's just great marketing.
GO KINGS OF LEON Can't wait to see them Nov. 5th...

i was on a long car journey this weekend and it's really good to listen to it from start to finish with it blaring out from car speakers! it hits u from all angles (if you're sat in the back, and there's speakers in the back too!) !! songs that i wasn't too sure of i'm now like wow, thats a tune!! 17 for instance, love it! yea it's different but it's not selling out at all. i think it's so insulting to say that, especially when you listen to cold desert, and its so obviously coming straight from caleb's soul. i know there was SUCH anticipation for this album, and if it wasn't what some people were expecting, it could come as a shcok to listen to, but try to embrace it is a KOL progression, something they've put a lot of effort in to, for us the fans and also something they can be proud of too. there's so many beautiful little quirks in every song on this album deffo, and if that brings them more success, they deserve it!!

I really don't understand peoples hate towards the new album. The more i listen to it the more i think 'fucking hell this album is great'.
For everyone that says they've sold out, hardly! Their sound has evolved that's all......
Great album from a band at the peak of their powers.

I have held back from expressing my opinion for a while, primarily because i wanted to properly establish what I think of the album. therefore, this is the first time i have written in this thread. Also, i have not read any of the pages in this thread, but i intend on doing so after my post is written. I am sorry if i offend anyone, esp those HAers who i talk to all the time. I will express things the best i can. This album is bloody BORING!!! i just really really really can't believe how.... empty it is! there are some really great songs - and some really bad songs! The great songs: - sex on fire
- use somebody
- manhattan
- revelry
I can't help but say - the songs 17 and Notion start off sounding like CHRISTMAS SONGS! i was like "wtf" when i heard em for the first time cause it felt like xmas in september! -- does anyone get the feeling that these songs (when they start) are about to proceed into jingle bells or something?? lol i spoke to a mate of mine and i swear i didnt mention it and he told me he thought they sounded like wedding songs! i just felt like it was jingle bells remixed into KOL. besides those two weak intros, the songs are good i must admit. Be Somebody and Cold Desert are just mediocre. I don't like these songs. horrendous. I Want You makes me fall asleep - theres a difference, to me, between a song which is chilled back and breathtaking and a song which is chilled back and boringggg. for example, trani is chilled back but is amazing. i want you is erm, a waste of space. If you can appreciate it as a filler i understand, cause it is relaxing - but i just sit there and think "is painfully chilled back" This is DECISIVELY my least favourite kol album . I love BOTT - its a genius lp - however, OBTN sounds like a very awful "BOTT part 2" they liked the big sounding BOTT and tried to do it again or something. I have always been able to appreciate KOL due to their ability to do something completely diff with every cd - and they have done it exceptionally! they sound like a completely diff band on every album. there is nothing new on OBTN which is fine by me - only if the music is great. for me the vast majority does nothing. I remember my oldest brother always telling me about the band BRMC - he told me Black Rebel once made this awful album and got dropped for it (from their label i think) and then made a mad comeback. lol now KOL are no way getting dropped, coz as we know this album has given them amazing mainstream attention and most people from what i hear love the lp. my point is - i have faith KOL will eventually make an album again which i absolutely love (as i love Y&YM, ASH and BOTT). i dunno if it will be the 5th lp, but it will happen. they're only young and have done big things in 5 yrs. I am extremely sad about this lp - its a shocker in my eyes. Besides those songs i listed, i just don't understand what they were thinking I am sorry if any of you lose respect for me - but i have to say what i think, cause no one can really fool themselves. this is what i feel, and i im distraught. shit happens i spose. god i sound like a person died or something. but i really am down in the dumps about this lp. X rosey
