Manhattan is growing on me like you would not believe every listen makes me like it more. little bits of the song have now pretty much grown into the whole thing, it's so weird i usually reserve judgement for a song less i'm sure, like cause i may not get it now but i know i probably will but manhattan made me want to growl at it. it reminded me of where nobody knows, a bit too light and poppy almost.
the album is a grower but gotta say from the first listen i really loved the mood of it. the different combinations of light and dark and how they were dealt out.
17 confuses me. what is it doing?! it's slade crossed with that war is over song. it's like it's saying two things at the same time.
I love the lyrics, Caleb's voice is so good!
It's kinda bluesy, down south, whiskey drinking. they've strangely (after trying to escape it for so long) come full circle and become the shit-kicking Followills, but like totally under yr feet. I dunno. It's cool, it is who they are. The album as a whole IS NOT BORING! it's relaxed, pretty, rude and going somewhere.
She spit up and came back for more!!!! Possibly the best line on the whole album and i am disgusting, yes i am aware.

I think what people are frustrated with is not that it's the band trying something new but that it's them NOT trying something new. With each of their previous albums, their growth as musicians and songwriters has been very apparent. BOTT was such a huge jump from ASH that it absolutely amazed me the first few times I heard it. OBTN feels a bit stagnant to me. Like I said earlier, apart from the first 3 tracks it feels like they just took the True Love Way/Ragoo/Fans path and expanded it to an entire album. I love Fans and True Love Way but that's in part because they serve as a bit of a breather from the intensity of the rest of the album. This whole album is a break from the intensity that is the band's trademark. It's not a new direction, it's a quiet spot in a previous album expanded to 8 songs. And I'm in the love 17/don't care for Cold Desert. Bells do not a Christmas song make. I also suspect that Revelry wouldn't be getting as much love if it wasn't for the Allman Bros guitar. I'm really loving Closer, Use Somebody, Crawl, Sex On Fire, and Notion, but all in all, I think this is the weakest album the band has made.

Cold Desert is a song that fills me with so much emotion, it's beyond brilliant. I think the whole album is fucking class from start to finish.
It's been a strange experience because the very first listen I couldn't get used to the sound of the album, it overwhelmed me I did not like it. I've not liked other songs by the band before on BOTT for example that album doesnt hit the spot like this one does. I've gone from saying "I REALLY don't like this shit" to "Fuck this is FANTASTIC" in 2 days which is an absolute laugh. Each song on this album needs time to embed into your ear drums. That's why I haven't gave an instant reaction.
Long ago I had a downloaded version of ASH and I'd stick it on and think not for me, I don't get it. As now I have to listen to KOL once per day minimum.
I would write about each song but think I'll wait till other ppl have the chance to listen so we can share it as one. Gotta see what everyone reckons, the album gets to the end very quick tho. time just flies by, its bloody amazi

Does anyone else kind of feel like they lied to us about this album. Remember this: Maybe I need to give the album another listen but... it doesn't rock harder and they didn't return to their southern roots.

Well, at this point with musicians I don't really view it as lying. What they decribed could have been exactly where they were at in that point of the recording. Album recording sessions seem to evolve and change a lot as the songwriting process goes on. I just don't believe a word said about an album until it's confirmed that he album has been finished.

I have no idea if anyone has mentioned this already but...
Cold Desert and Purple Rain.
Similar?
I think so!!
I listened to Cold Desert in the car with my Dad today and he said y'know this reminds me a little of Prince, I just dunno what song and I just clicked! PURPLE RAIN, he was like hmmm I dunno if its that song specifically...then like 2 secs later the singing starts and he's like yeah...its the same as Purple Rain haha

I wouldn't go so far as to say they were similar songs

Okay, I'm about to sound like the biggest hypocrite ever here, but I've listened to the album again and I've completely changed my mind about it. it's not the sound I was hoping for, but some tracks are simply beautiful.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE: Closer (great, beautiful display of Caleb's vocals), I Want You (favorite on the album, sounds like it could be on AHA or YAYM)
I really like: Sex on Fire, Use Somebody, Manhattan, Cold Desert. All good tracks
Okay: Crawl, 17, Revelry, Be Somebody. Alright... I may skip over them when I own the album.
Don't like: Notion... sucks. Shouldn't be on the album.

nah I love the woaahs! I've had time and plenty to really listen to the music and I really like it. I said earlier that it was missing that KOL feeling but I guess I just didn't recognize it at first. My only complaint is Matt's guitar work. We all know he could have done 100x better...like when I listen to Cold Desert and he starts to solo, I always wait for him to go off into an emotion-evoking playing style that lasts a while, like Arizona. Instead, he ends his solo abruptly and its really irritating

i reckon this is not the right thread to be posting in but as I don't want to start a new one, here's an article I think hasn't been posted Kings of Leon: 'Downloaders lack respect'Kings of Leon's Caleb Followill has hit out at illegal downloaders, saying that they lack respect for musicians.
Followill's group, which ended Katy Perry's five-week reign at the top of the UK singles chart with new song 'Sex On Fire', told Last.fm that web pirates "don't know what it's like" being a musician for a living.
He said: "There are a lot of people online that say, 'These guys have a wonderful life, screw them if they don't want me listening' - you don't know what it's like!
"Literally, sometimes I jump out of bed at three in the morning and go and write something down because I just had a dream and I thought of something.
"You don’t know what goes into writing a song, let alone an album. It’s not a day at the office - you're putting your heart and soul into something and for people to not respect that, that's crazy. But when you have people that do it the right way - that's pushing your art form."
There was also a wee picture of Caleb with it

I don't feel guilty at all...I've spent a lot more than the cost of one album in pre-orders of all their new releases plus a gig ticket...

No illegal KOL tracks on my computer!! And I pre-ordered the album from Amazon!
