matt is a better guitarist for sure though. in on call caleb basically just plays one chord in the entire song and its in the chrous wheras matt busts out with a solo with hammer ons bends etc. and in charmer caleb basically doesnt play anything for almost half of the song. and this is in no way a jab at calebs guitar skills though

lol I don't think that has ever been at issue. I mean it's kind of obvious, isn't it? Of course the lead guitar gets all the cool solos and the rhythm guitar just accords to accompany the melodie. So you need a lot more skills to play lead guitar. You can't really compare that. It's like Jared tapping his foot in a song and you say "Nathan is waay better at percussion". Well duh, of course he is

does anybody in here like the squeeking sound that matt does nowadays when they play "four kicks" live? i don't like it, it sounded cool when he did it for the first time in 2007 just for fun. but now he plays the solo always like this. same with mollys chambers. i definitly think matt could work out so much more great guitar work, more than he actually did on the last 2 records. i think he's gotten a little bit too lazy, or maybe he's gotten a little bit too lost in effect pedals his best soli, hands down, are the basically no effects using on YAYM (spiral staircase, happy alone, trani, red morning light and so on)

I don't think he's just gotten lazy, it's also partly to do with the other guys. Matt's said that they kept the first things he tried out for the solos on CAS. I've a feeling Matt would've wanted to experiment a bit more, but the others said it was good. Just like they also said that Caleb's dummy lyrics were good enough to stay as the actual lyrics. Maybe with the next record they have to push themselves a bit harder and not settle with the first thing that sounds good (and let Caleb actually write the lyrics beforehand). Good can often be made better.

yeah maybe they're a little bit too fast in recording new stuff. of corse, every band is different but some other bands take their time to record new material.
i didn't mean that matt got lazy considerign not developing his skills. i still think he's one of the most creative and talented guitar players nowadays but he should stop putting 10 effects on a simple guitar solo. 2 effects are enough if the solo kicks ass, thats what i think

His guitar tone for me is suffering now, so dull and boring compared to what it used to be!

Manhattan remains my fave song off of OBTN and Matty's soaring guitar on it is amazing and gives me the chills every time I listen to it.
