i couldnt agree with laim gallagher and sawyer more... i hate what they have become. ive been a fan on them since i was 11. which was when youth and young manhood came out and i fear for what their going to produce next. i would give my right arm and leg to hear stuff like the last 3 albums. i know bands have to try new things and "grow" but i personally think they have sold their souls for the big bucks. thinking about it makes me genuinely upset and makes me like them less. people used to have no idea who they were so when i used to show them kol they used to laugh and say it was rubbish. Now those people walk around singing "sex on fire " or come and ask me if ive heard the new album becuase its really good.or ill be round college and hear it as a ringtone. Their not a staduim band.their a small venue personal band. now at gigs i get looked upon as a "tenny bopper" or someone thats jumped on the "sex on fire " bandwaggon where as infact im probably an older fan then they are i miss the raw sound of it all. I know this has been said before and i know you dont like it ..buts its just my opinion and i needed to say it Hi Quinny!! I hope you read this. I was really glad to read your post yesterday, but had no time to respond and say I liked it. I wish I had as it looks like you've deleted. I liked that you spoke your mind - I've given you karma. Some people are feeling that they are not allowed to express any criticsim of KOL on here which has got to be wrong. This forum is not a fascist or communist dictatorship. (If it ever is, baggsy me to be the despot in charge!! ) I'm glad Schnucams quoted you so we still have it. I wish I had had your taste when I was eleven, but sadly I did not. (I'm not going there, it's embarrassing) Sounds to me as though you have every right to call yourself a fan even though you are disappointed in the latest album and as you say, upset - ( I read your posts when I gave you karma, sorry if that's stalking - it did feel weird to be doing it) I think anyone who comes away from a KOL gig with a cut lip and other injuries and is still happy is a fan!! If/When you wash your hands of this band because you just don't like their new stuff, to me that's when you stop being a fan - at the moment you seem to still be caring about them deeply, hence the upset. You've been a fan since YAYM came out - I completely understand why this irks. One or two people have said things on here about teenagers (actually, teenage girls) which comes across as very sweeping generalisation, and judgemental. And they should know better. Some teenagers are like that (you obviously know some of them) but not all. So do I!! (Though I like (not love) OBTN) There is a strong streak in me that likes rawness. I like a lo-fi sort of sound too, even scuzzy. But not exclusively. ( eg Radiohead - definitely not raw!) I hope the fact you deleted doesn't mean you are put off expressing your opinion again. Sawyer, you absolutely have not upset me my previous post was almost entirely to do with my sense of humour (which obviously is lame ) and the fact you are still posting even after you said you are done. No, I am not upset, but thank you for caring 'Selling out' - this is getting to Quinny too. I do see that making money is important to KOL - it always has been. They have always been ambitious for success too, and I think they have enjoyed and continue to enjoy what fame brings. I don't see there being anything wrong with this. Some people think there is. (not saying you do) I think they want to be popular at home for the reasons they have said - they want their family to fully realise what they have achieved, they want their home to be a place that recognises them. (I don't know these guys, but it's possible given some of what has been said in interview that there is an element of wanting to say "we were right and you lot should have had more faith" with regard to some family members, ex employers etc. That's supposition on my part and I'm not putting a lot of weight on it) I don't think they are selling out because I think they are still pursuing the music - it's just not the same music that we all can agree that we love. (Sorry, this is turning in to an essay) KOL have said time and time again that they are anxious to be better at their music and to write better music. They want to be the best. They are still saying that, as Claire (Schnucams) pointed out. I agree with Claire here, they say that and I believe them. And I believe that they believe that that is what they are doing. In the end it may be that KOL will be as happy as sunbeams producing music that every single person currently signed up to this forum thinks is absolute utter crap. We will all be crying, the sound of wailing will circle the globe, possibly drowning out the said crap. I would be sad, but only for a bit because, you know what - I don't think it matters, ultimately. They are a band and it is entertainment. I'm repeating what I've said before. Important as this music is to us, it is by its nature a passing phase. They have their lives to live and I have no right to think that they are selling out if the music they love to make is different from what I think is great. There is other great music out there, AND fantastic bands on their way in the future that I can discover - my past experience tells me this - so I don't need to cling to KOL if they want to go somewhere I don't. Maybe I'm just old, but I think selling out is a red herring. edit : passing phase - by that I mean nothing stands still and KOL won't either

What songs on OBTN do you happy aloners like. I do like Closer but that's it. Crawl would be a decent b-side from BOTT but the rest is pretty poor. Sex On Fire just makes me laugh and everything up until Cold Desert isn't listenable. I liked it better when I couldn't understand all of Calebs lyrics. Does anybody know how much of the songwriting they actually wrote for YAYM. It seems that Angelo Petraglia wrote quite a bit of it. That saddens me a little since it's their best record. I don't know, it was just co-written. I like closer, crawl, sex on fire is CRAP the way I see it is simple music and stupid catchphrase thingie appeals to the stupid masses, I quite like use somebody, well I like it's potential it could have turned out really really good, but it didn't. I like notion, I think cos it's one of the only upbeat songs on the album event though it's not even that upbeat and then yeah I like cold desert. I could listen to all the other albums as albums, but not this one, it's just not a good album, I have to skip stuff

Crawl a b-side??? I dont think so! Imo, crawl is one of KOLs shining moments, musically and lyrically!!!!! I also love Closer, Beneath the Surface and I want you! I love Use Somebody and I really like Sex on Fire!! I also love Cold Desert, Revelry and Manhattan.......... Does it matter to you that both Jared and Matt have said that they are mortified by the songs on Y&YM??? They aint ever going back to that so we all may just build a bridge!!

Are you serious, did they really say that??? Wow if they did then I may have to turn my back Kings of Leon. If the boys honestly think that Only By the Night is the type of music that they are proud of and want to make I can honestly say that I will never have good expectations for their future albums...

I think its a shame they see their early music that way. Its what defined them as something new and raw, what originally built their uk fanbase. I have heard what they say about YAYM and for them to say that really makes me sad You cant live in the past i know that, but to speak negatively about the stuff that got you noticed in the first place is just silly. Oh boys i love you all so much but you do confuse me sometimes hehe

I can't believe the Kings would say that about YAYM. It makes sense since they don't play anything off of it except Molly which is the worst song. The 2006 tour is going to be known as their best tour. They were tight musically and playes a great set with a mix of all 3 albums. I guess Trani won't ever get played again. This sucks because I always wanted to hear Wasted Time. These guys were one of the most original bands in the last 10 years and now they are everything that is wrong w/ american music. Thank god for bands like The Raconteurs, Modest Mouse,Queens Of The Stone Age,ETC. I'm not trying to cut on what the Kings were, just what they have become. T

re : are the kings selling out? I've lifted this link from the Band section, KOL on the Hour in Canada thread where xlouisex posted this link. It's just the interview with Caleb and Matthew from that show and is about 12 minutes long. At one point the interviewer asks them about reaction to the new albums success from longterm fans. Don't know how long the station will keep the interview up for. I thought it was fair enough to let band members have their say on this here too. www.cbc.ca/thehour/videos.html?id=922448193

Liam Gallagher is an arrogant tosser, but I have to admit I agree with this, KOL went for the money but they've said they want to make it big to feel like they've achieved, and they've done it and they seem happy as a result of, so let 'em be I say!

I hate the term "selling out", it's so over-used in the music business. So many bands have done just that to make the big bucks and in all honesty, it's a damn shame. If you can't be true to yourself or your art what's the point? Why sell your soul just to make money and not believe in what you do? There's an old saying, I think it goes something like: "Be hated for what you are, rather than loved for what you're not" - It's been my own personal motto for a long time.
Whether or not KOL have sold their souls just to make a fast buck and become bigger I don't know. I look at it this way, as long as they're happy then fine. If they're not, then that's when the problems will begin. So many bands have sold their souls to make a buck and within 5 years they've split up because they're just not doing what they once loved [what first inspired them to be musicians] any more. It would be sad to see this happen to the boys. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. One album does not mean they are over or selling out. I'm holding my breath waiting for the next one, then we'll see.
I have to say though, the comment about YAYM makes me sad. Those songs are what made them who they are, and to turn your back on it would not only be a travesty, but an insult to the fans who have been with them from day one, and who believe that YAYM is their finest work. But if they didn't write it...then I can see to a certain degree where they're coming from.
I'm rambling. I didn't plan on this being a long post. I only wanted to say ticboo, I enjoyed reading your last post, I was nodding my head and praising you the entire time. You hit the nail on the head. Karma is on it's way.
I'm just going to enjoy the boys and their music while I can, because none of us know how long it's going to last.

yeah, oasis is kinda... :-/and the liam guy
i am a big fan of old KOL stuff, and i can't say i'm too excited abt the short hair and catchy tunes with no solos.but people,we have been fans for so long and there's got to be a different reason why we stick to them, correct if wrong.
well, thats my case,i've kinda gotten to love the boys and i trust them.every artist has to explore.who knows what they'll bring in the future, and if i dont like it,ill just go back to my four kicks, but they sure have done enough to gain my support at all times!
anyway,the songs stay,right?
