cold desert is my favourite, so far that is.
not sure if i like manhattan album version as much as live. use somebody, be somebody and closer are all in the same boat at the minute. I like them, just not giving them as much attention as they would like. be patient, i will listen to you all.

MY OPINION ON ALBUM - SONG BY SONG RATING
Closer - I really like this track...its dark, its mysterious. the melodies are great and the band sound great as a whole on this track. however another section may be needed, but not too big a problem. 8
Crawl - Still not sure about this one... live its great and it does have some good ideas... studio... the bass is ballsy as and i love that.. but i dont feel like the rest matches it.. especially matt's guitar.. which is non existent in parts and adds very little... the solo could also be better. 6
Sex on Fire - I like this song alot.. there are great melodies great guitar parts and it's just really really catch great song. 9
Use Somebody - It sounds a bit...too commercial. but i cant say i dont enjoy listening to it. its a nice song.. and the end section i like alot...there is something pixies-ish i cant pick out. good song 7
Manhattan - I do like this song... it would have fit well on BOTT and has great melodies and great sections and essentially ticks all the right boxes. 8
Revelry - Overall, a very forgettable track. Has nice parts with the 'woo' and the drums that so follow. But this song seems very timid and dull... which ears commercial country music. 4.5
17 - For a song with a great verse... this song is atrocious. the section with "shes only seventeeen" and so on is very good.. but the rest is quite simply awful. Dont even get me started on the church bells and the chorus. 3
Notion - Theyve really gotta stop channeling REO Speedwagon and all the rubbish 80s arena rock. This song... is aesthetically..pleasant and will appeal to those who expect nothing more from ther music experience then a nice feeling...its very stock standard the piano makes it quite poncy. 4
I Want You - This song would ok... if it went for 3 MINUTES!..but no it stretches out to a 5 minute song that goes absolutely noweher. 5
Be Somebody - When this song came on..i said to myself 'Thank God!'.. this was until the chorus at (1:11) or so.. when i felt violated. That whole song is very cool... but that chorus is soooooooo lame! god damnit! 5
Cold Desert- This is a pretty good track.... very atmospheric. A haunting country ballad that i can appreciate. good melodies, good guitars and everything really.. nothing great..but good 7
Only By The Night -
It is in this album... where the Kings of Leon have lost sight. Although not a terrible album... there is nothing here that is particular engaging. Lots of very unoriginal ideas and no... KOL originality that weve come to expect and that stood out so vividly in BOTT. There are more interesting ideas and dynamics.. and in short more going on in 'My Party' then there is throughout the entire of this album.

i can see why they left 17 off aha, its freakin terrible!!!

Manhattan - 7 (live version is much better, too flat in the studio)

Some tracks are just too flat and they haven't used Matts guitar skills enough I feel. They could have made some amazing upbeat tracks utilising his abilities. Not saying he isn't good on here, he's good with what melodies Caleb's written. Some tracks are by far some of the best things they've written.

So far I've only listened to 2 songs...
17 and I Want You.
17 is NOWHERE near as bad as people on here are saying.
Its by no means a top 5 contender for best KOL song but its still a good song and just cos theres bells at the start doesn't mean it automatically sounds like a christmas song. I like it.
I Want You is already one of my favourite KOL songs. I'm loving the chilled out vibe.
So far I've heard 5 and a bit songs from the album over the past month or so and I don't think it sounds like a sell-out album at all.

i think the fact they recorded it in "in a way" for glastonbury came at the expense of the album's quality a bit... maybe they should have taken more time to come up with new ideas. still a good album imo

My brother ( Who Bought Y&YM but then went off KoL for some reason) came in the room as 17 started and he said 'this sounds like a christmas song' and he could not have heard anyone else say it. |

No it's not! When i heard it I didn't think ' this sounds like a christmas song' but after I saw people saying it on here and then listening to it, I saw where they were coming from. The bit at the start does sound a bit Christmas-y. But overall, it does not sound like a Christmas song. |

Oh god. With all this talk of '17' I couldn't resist looking it up on youtube...I really didn't like what I heard. I'm praying it grows on me! I found it really boring to be honest. I think the begining sounds really christmasy, but not once it get's further in...

but overall, i am not that impressed. i miss the big rockers like Black thumbnail, mcfearless etc. They have been listening to too much pearl jam and 80s stadium rock.
