Lots of different opinions on this album eh? and i don't think thats a bad thing at all. anyway, thought I'd give my two cents as to what i think about it. Use somebody, unreal! don't think there are many people that don't find it really catchy, especially love 2.50 when i think it's matt? starts singing, and the guitar solo after that is amazing aswell. Sex on fire, closer, be somebody, manhattan and revelry are my other favourites. When the Kings said this album was going to rock harder I expected something slightly different, but I really like the stuff anyhoo, In my opinion it's actually quite a relaxed album closer, revelry and cold desert all really chilled out tracks, just brilliant to listen to. Probably Crawl and Be Somebody are the most stereotypical 'rock' songs I'd say..."I loosen my tie, I loosen my tie"

Probably Crawl and Be Somebody are the most stereotypical 'rock' songs I'd say..."I loosen my tie, I loosen my tie" The dark side of Be Somebody is cool; itreminds me of I Might Be Wrong by Radiohead, especially at the end. Love the drumming. I think I'm slowly getting my head around the chorus but it still seems a little bizarre in the context of the rest of the song. I really like Use Somebody, even though it's so different to anything they've done before. My only quibble with it is that the ending is a bit corny and the "solo" is somewhat repetitive. Just minor details really that I'll forgive, considering how quickly it was all put together. On the whole it's very much a "feel-good" album, with the possible exceptions of Closer and Crawl. Cold Desert by far the standout track for me. So heartfelt. It's in a league of its own and I think a lot of people will relate to it.

I dont get why they just used Matt as an effect to add to songs. Almost every song revolves around Jareds bass and they just sprinkle the songs with guitar. Very confusing as Matt is a talented guitarist totally agree with this. matt is underutilised... riffs are mixed so low or non-existent to the breakdown of a song. and he seems to spend most of his time messing around with feedback and effects. and what the fuck is with the castanet things that ruin his guitar solo in manhattan??

This album falls somewhere between a bar-b-q pit and a back porch swing. To me, that isn't a bad thing. Y&YM showed off the wailing guitars, ASH showed off the Jared's bass playing (its all over the place on that record) and BotT put the spotlight on Nathan's drumming because it is insanely amazing so this go around Caleb stepped up his game lyrically and vocally. Maybe next album they can put it all together. "Be Somebody" has a jam session that sounds just like Red Hot Chili Peppers, "I Want You" sounds a little like "Sunshine Girl" by Whitestarr and something Kid Rock would have put out. "Crawl" has this Led Zeppelin feel, "Use Somebody" can be somewhat of a Coldplay-ish track with the singing in the background, while "Manhattan" has an eerie Dave Matthews Band sound to it. "Cold Desert" is "Arizona" part two. After I have said all that, I still think it is a good record, yeah it might have been rushed but you cannot say Caleb dropped the ball on this record, he raised his game up. I do not see to many of these tracks being played live. Listen, every album cannot be their greatest; look at U2 they put out some of the best albums of all time and they also put out Zooropa & How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. It was going to happen sooner or later, and it happened now. No, its not their best but its got some songs on it that are really good. This album is served well with a steak, a cold beer, a sunset on a chilly summer night, on a swing with your best friends.

The album is no way their best but Revelry has become on of my favourite KOL songs. I actually love it.

Use Somebody - 1.52 !!!! I wait for that part the whole time!!!!!! Does anyone else think the solo sounds a bit out of place, not the whole of it, just the crossover (it does sound better with more listening).

Well from what I gather, KOL have album concepts as to what they want to do with every album and they go with it. So in a way their albums are kind of concept albums.
Y&YM was throw back, they were young. You can definately hear Rolling Stones, Zeppelin, and even Dylan influences in that album (well, Dylan specifically on Trani). They had the classic rock vibe going on for sure there, with the jeans and the long hair, etc. The album in itself was raw.
ASH was pretty much them changing, getting more fashion oriented. Their music evolved to a more Strokes-ey sound. But a southern Strokes sound. Its probably the most dancable KOL album. Still my favourite out of all of them.
BOTT i'd have to say was very Pixies inspired and you can definately hear different influences on this album. They definately took a different path again, and wanted to try something new. Its definately arena rock. Pretty heavy album. So they changed again.
OBTN is pretty much a continuation of BOTT, but BOTT was more heavy rock. I can still hear somewhat of the same BOTT sound in OBTN but its a much lighter, relaxed album. Its probably their less rocked out record yet. More or less I guess that was their concept, to have that lighter sounding album which they have never had before.
So they all followed some-what of a format. They're musical and fashion chameleons who re-invent themselves all the time.
With that said, Frontier City better melt some face.
Maybe one day they'll make a gospel album like BRMC, or something really country.

Be Somebody sounds like a song from the Killers...that's not necessarily a good thing.

Closer- it's a little repetitive and lacks a true hook but its still a very atmospheric and spooky way to open the album.
Crawl- i think this song became worth more now that we've heard it within the context of the album. its a hard rocking frustrated song that contrasts well with some of the care free lyrics on other songs.
sex on fire- probably the best choice for a single. its immediately catchy so yea.
use somebody- yes this is a coldplay-esque song but its also damn good. not really complicated or anything like that but has anything caleb ever written that complicated? pretty standard melody and will be one of the better live songs from this album.
manhattan- i don't quite see the dave matthews influence here. its pretty much the b-side to arizona, calebs and matthews guitar parts are nearly the exact same. but real smooth bass lines from jared and some great vocal acrobatics from caleb.
revelry- those opening chords and vocal melody? fucking genius. its like the mini song at the very end of slow night so long. i think its very unique and represents one of calebs truly original song ideas.
17- so americana. i hear bruce springsteen here, circa born to run. very pleasant song.
notion- another very american song with bruce springsteen moments. i guess i wish it had a true chorus.
i want you- nearly the same bass line as charmer. this song is a little more relaxed and really gives you chills if you're a romantic sorta person. love that liquidy guitar part that's always scratching the surface but never quite gets there.
be somebody- haven't really figured this one out yet. but i do like how they sort of turn the steering wheel hard at the chorus. it seems to work.
cold desert- its not knocked up, not arizona. at this point it seems a little too noisy muddled and lacks a memorable melody.
overall, this album will be really hard to perform live. i mean it just won't sound the same as it does on record. some of the songs are easy rockers, and slow burners, and there's nothing wrong with that, the guys have plenty of head bangers in there catalogue. this album is great. i mean they have been so productive since releaseing holy roller novocaine EP. i wish they would have turned up matt's guitar a lot. seems like nathan kinda phoned the drums in. jared's bass is great, more subtle than ever before, but he funks it up at all the right moments.

You guys need to chill out, just like this album.I can easily listen to this album all the way through unlike BOTT where i would skip ragoo, trunk, the runner and my party. This album seems far more thought through and a generally more cohesive effort.OBTN is a summer evening album where as YAYM and Aha were party albums and BOTT was a dark brooding album.
Just take the album for what it is,instead of what it isnt in comparison to the others.

BOTT has 5-6 outstanding tracks, ups and downs all the way through the album
OBTN has maybe 1 or 2 great tracks, but there are no ups and down, all the album is even
