Here here Irishmick.
I've said similar things myself on various threads.
To be honest, this debate is now sending me to sleep!!

I still strongly dislike it, it's just so not them. Maybe from another band, but it's not their sound. Loe Caleb's voice in it though. I agree with you. I've been thinking about why I'm so angry about this song, and I am quite furious about it. I think that with a title like "Sex on Fire" which is a pretty bold title to begin with, I was expecting something that rocked more. Something dirtier and harder. This song sounds somewhat wussed out and is almost like a Journey song. I imagined that this song would be "Spiral Staircase" quality. So I'm disappointed that it sounds more like a love song than a rocker. I don't entirely hate the new sound the guys have put out. But when I listen to KOL, I tend to listen to ASH and Y&YM more than BOTT. If you notice, the band tended to perform more tracks from those two albums in their sets this summer than from BOTT. Why?

Perhaps because they are playing to festival crowds so they would play the stuff the majority of the crowd know as opposed to their own gigs where they have fans there to see them and who would appreciate more of their music, including the stuff that isnt so mainstream.......
Just a thought!!!

Why? maybe thats because ure comparin two albums against one, i mean at oxegen they played , knocked up, charmer, on call, my party, black thumbnail, arizona and fans. thats 7 from an album of 13, i dont tink songs like the runner and trunk would go well at a festival, even in a kings show. and u shudnt be furious about this song, maybe in a couple more listens it will finally hit u, this song has a very fast momentum and calebs voice nails the sex on fire line. the reason i tink people are gettin annoyed about this song is maybe the lyrics are what some wud call simplistic, but just because the lyrics arnt complicated and challenging doesnt mean the song doesnt rock

My brother got a mention on Jo Whileys show before they played it today (Dan from Ashford Kent). He texted in to say he heard it on Zanes show last night and that he thought it is brilliant and that we are going to Brixton next week to see them, I texted as well but didn't get mentioned! Ah i remember this ..... i was at work waxing my clients legs trying to take my time because i wanted 2 hear it again! Jo Whiley actually peed me off cos she said were play it before 11 and it was like 2min to! i hate it when DJs have the power like that ............ Roll on Brixton .........

I guess what originally drew me to the band is that they didn't sound like every other band on the radio and they have slicked their sound up so much that if it wasn't for Caleb's voice, it would be hard to tell the difference between them and many of the bands played on U.S. radio. And all they play on U.S. radio is rap and crappy rock.

Well i have to say ive listened to it a good few times now and im glad to report it has finally grown on me (not literally ) Its been in my head all day and i do like it now, i think KOL are always gonna be one of those bands you initially go...um..im not sure about it then something just clicks and you love it! I read in NME today that Caleb has been really aprehensive about making this album and that he didnt really want to make a big album sound (or something to that effect)

yeah he has been thinking otherwise about naming the song sex on fire, thats about it really, to be fair when i first heard crawl, i was a bit apprehensive because i thought it sounded rushed, but now i love it except that matthews solo should be louder at the end

all four tracks have gotten me super excited for September 23 Crawl - heavy as hell, love it. omg. i find myself singing "better learn to crawl, before i walk away" constantly. and a ridic guitar solo to wrap it up.
Manhattan - Probly the most catchy of the four. loving the voice on this track. it fits the song perfectly.
Use sombeody - U2 influenced, very catchy. cant wait to hear the whole version.
Sex on fire - hot damn. a little to arena -ish. not my favorite but still its wonderful just cuz its KOL Ya dig?

im liking the new material, but its a bit annoying that ive heard so much of it.
thats now a third of the album.
i think on previous albums you would hear 1 maximum 2 tracks and then really look forward to that first listen.
its my own fault i suppose for listening

I like the song (karma for the link). It's the sound I want to hear from KOL. Good stuff. Back to that unique sound that separates them from everyone else.

I'm thinking a lot of people are saying, 'ohh its not their sound' etc and they are a little disappointed, but, as much as i understand that each individual song is obviously very important, i don't think we can judge their 'new sound' until the WHOLE album comes out. An album is a package and i personally feel that sometimes songs work better when you are hearing the album all together. this might sound weird (?) I'm personally loving the new songs, I understand that some people might think the lyrics on the likes of 'sex on fire' aren't up to scratch, but ya never know they might be keeping the deep and meaningfuls for other tracks on the album??haha.. anyhoo, just thought i'd pop my opinion in also, i've seen some people write on the official kol forum and maybe this one, about the fact that they're not what they used to be etc and how they're worried they might come 'commercial' but i've heard on a few interviews now where they've said even more so on this album they have really put themselves into it and how even their friends etc are producing it and they're not going to let anything happen unless they're completely in control of it and agree with whats being done. maybe this is for another thread? anyways, im off to have my dinner!haha

I agree with fully. I expected a KICK ASS rock n roll song. Something raw like their traditional songs. I also don't have great expectations for this new album anymore. They said it would rock harder and bla bla but all their new songs are just digging deeper into synthesizers, weird pedal effects and songs that have been done a thousand times in the past. I think their new songs are too direct...to much like "this is the song, theses are the lyrics and this is the weird effects we are going to use for it, along with the rest of our album." The way they setup their songs is so boring. I miss how they would be singing, caleb would freak out and then matt would perform a crazy ass solo that made you want to groove. Now a'days? Not so much...
I don't understand how you can go from ass kicking songs like spiral staircase, SNSL, four kicks, and genius etc to shitty boy band songs like "use somebody." I would seriously be emberrased to run songs like use somebody around friends. The lyrics are so backstreet boyish and the melody is unoriginal.
As far as Sex on Fire goes, Jared really saved that song, but I'm still disappointed.

Shitty boyband songs? ? I do not understand?? Some of the best rock and roll bands have produced very powerful ballads and havent been demoted to the realm of "boyband world". Have u heard more than the brief taster on the home video??? I'm confused how all of these very critical opinions can be formed before all of the album, in some cases, all of a song is heard.

I have had a few days to hear this now and it has finally "clicked" - someone else mentioned that, you start to hum it without realising it, sign of a good song, this is most probably why its the first single, good commercial sound.
As for what it sounds like, Bob Seger, circa like a rock album with a hint (as previously mentioned) of Dakota.
