I just barely saw this thread though it seems that it's gone on for a little while but I thought I'd put my input in on why KOL are an amazing band & will most likely be remembered and loved by future gens:
A) They've stuck it thru all that bullsh*t. Wolfmother, the Libertines, and Jet have all tried out that old-school garage rock sound and have sucked...hard. KOL started out with a southern/blues vibe with YAYM, kicked it up a notch and got rocking w/ ASH and then made some interesting sound choices w/ BofTimes by channeling everything from the Pixies to Led Zepplin and pulling out a mean lullaby with "the Runner". Most of these other bands are a gimmick and haven't stayed as strong nor have they changed their sound around album to album.
B)They are not mainstream. Sure they may have a good thing going in Europe (mostly England) but they aren't too often admired or played on the radio in the states. We're still waiting for a another full tour from them and we're waiting for any mag other than "hipster" Spin or "sell-outs" Rolling Stones to give them a decent cover and the right exposure they deserve.
C)the Kings are great song writers. How many other songs do you hear on the radio about knocking your girl up, calling your father a fool, transexuals hookers, and whorehouses in Arizona. I won't compare them to Bob Dylan as he is a tremendous song writer, but KOL are doing it up differently and their making it work.
negatives on KoL include their sometimes cockiness, their tendancy to write "filler" songs (songs that sometimes I feel they just throw on an album just because), and using Nacho as their poolboy. Which I'm sure Nacho doesn't mind.
I definitely respect anyone's opinion of a band but it was mighty silly to start a fight. And that's why I have responded with "truthiness" and genuine heartfelt feelings that I have for this band. I'm 20 years old; I'm not some teenybopper fan. I actually don't find KoL as attractive as their hairy days, so I definitely am over that. We talk about a lot of fun stuff here on the happyalone board. Not just how sexy the guys are or how much we hate the gf's. We also have threads where we talk about what KOL could do for better performances and what they could do for better albums in the future, so don't believe we don't have the music on our minds. We aren't a FOB, All American Rejects, or High School Musical board. Sorry to disappoint.
kjam1988, you seem hilarious, almost as hilarious as that girl who started "caleb was a cunt" thread. I think that's what it was called. And I think you are somewhat intelligent. But I'm striking back with some smarts as well and am telling you how I feel about KOL. I really hope you take them into consideration.

I totally concur about their live performances. I was going to touch on it but I've only experienced them once at Bonnaroo. Every time they come around I tend to miss their shows but Bonnaroo was my chance to get a sense of it.
Live performances are my favorite part of any band. Sometimes bands suck album-wise and then I'll see them live and I'll understand. It's the energy, it's how they can play songs you've never heard them play, and it's about how they react to the crowd. Ofcourse it's also about how well they can play their instruments. KOL, on the day of Bonnaroo were pretty good. It was weird that Caleb & Matt don't jump around enough and that they didn't play any b-sides or enough songs from YAYM. I also believe they ended with "Trani" which, from what I hear on the board, they often end with. But they played well and their speakers got screwed up and they didn't freak. I also find Nathan to be an amazing drummer. I think he did extremely well that day.
I think everyone on the board wishes they'd change it up a bit but I've heard some compliments about how they've gotten better. I hope to see them live soon again and get a better prognosis* about how all their shows go.
*I hope I'm using that word right. I'm too lazy to look at dictionary.com right now.
