Kinda surprised at the negativity here, lets not forget that KOL are just a simple band from Tennessee. (at least thats what RCA told us and we're gullible enough to believe!) The vocal effect is a bit of a stretch, and KOL is best when they record live and no extra production. But who wants to do that every album?

Ah guys its only one song. Give it a chance, a lot of bands experiment with new sounds and stuff. You can't expect people to be playing the same old stuff forever. Look at The Beatles for instance. They started off as pop as pop could be and when they got to their last album that was released (Let It Be) they really grew. Michelle Branch is another example. Played Pop/Rock all her life and now shes singing Country with Jessica Harp. Sounds completely different but its still amazing. Change can sometimes be good. But who knows, maybe the rest of the album will be like old times

well i had my doubts at the start, i agree it lacks the rawness and rough and ready appeal of their previous work, having said that i cant stop listening to it, plus live it sounds much better...to end just wanna remind u that when the bucket came out it was very different from their previous tuff allot more mainstream but the album was awsome non the less,,, kind regards

I'm getting used to it too, but the thing that still throws me off is that part where caleb sings the verse with "grawl". Doesnt sound good to me. The contrast between the synth and the rest of the song is still too much though.
I wish they would have kept the same recording style as they did with AHA. If they played the whole album live I think the sound would gel more.

hey im new. ive been listening to it over and over, its growing on me, and although it doesnt scream kol perhaps thats good, showing they're evolving as a band. and does anybody know if they have they used the first bit before? the 'ill come a running' bit? like before a live king of the rodeo - not sure. it sounds familiar.

It's still growing on me. I found myself singing it in the kitchen yesterday.
Don't forget too that singles always have the highest production values. And for what it's worth I think it sounds a bit like the Killers.

And for what it's worth I think it sounds a bit like the Killers. Its not necessarily about the production value, its just how they recorded it. I understand they are going for more artistic breathe, but I just dont like how polished and clean it is. I feel like its only taking away from the artistic substance. I'm glad they went for a bigger and different sound, but it just doesnt have that cutting edge to it. Thats what I loved about them, how raw and real the music sounded.

Did anybody here honestly expect KOL to put out another ASH? If they kept releasing the same stuff over and over again, they'd become a crappy band. And we all know they're not a crappy band.
I wish the recording industry would go back to the days where a band would release 2 CDs per year. That'd give more time for them to develop. It'd make transitions in sound easier for you to handle.

Oh and, I agree with the fact they need to evolve their musical style, and I think they are going in the right direction, well, from what I've heard so far (only three songs).

Did anybody here honestly expect KOL to put out another ASH? No, I dont think anyone here did. I guess my only problem with it just comes down to how they recorded it. I loved the live recordings of the songs, but the album version of this song let me down a bit.

I totally agree the live version is good, but the recording is a little too polished for my liking... its not bad.... artistic movement is good, but not when they waver so much from their "Roots" that its not actually them anymore. but the guitar solo is mighty fine

It's definitely a grower. It'll sound different when you hear the entire album i bet, it'll fit in better and we'll prob hear that the albums quite different and that it'll all go together well - fingers crossed.

i love it.... just bought it on itunes. the bass is amazing, you can definitely tell jared had an influence on the composition.
wow... i have been into their music forever and this is such a cool change. the old will always be amazing, but it's nice to have a little diversity.
it's a bit "epic"/ arena rockish. those tours with u2, bob dylan, and pearl jam had an affect on them too.
eek... im so stoked.

Well as a new poster I understand if my opinion is taken with a pinch of salt but... I really am impressed by On Call. When its CD quality coming out of a sub its going to sound impressive. That bass line is always going to sound a little toned down on mp3. That person on first page saying "as a fan from the beginning we should expect more" doesn't really speak like a fan from the beginning to me. Im not saying your not a fan if you don't like a certain song but you cant dismiss one song off an album which promises to be progressively different to its predecessors. Bands have to change to sound fresh in todays climate of one/two album bands and then onto the next flash in the pan. KOL have longetivity thanks to their age and talent. It would be a waste if they didnt try new things. Im going to see them in Folkestone on their return to the uk and i really cant wait to hear them flex their live muscles with the new sound. The majority of us now how brilliant a live band they are. From On Call it sounds like these songs were built to take on the road and like Keith Richards once said. A recorded song is never the finished article its when its played live that it can grow into itself
