The way the vocals in the first verse cut off and are all chopped up is pretty annoying methinks. Despite this, great tune.

I must say I also feel that this bodes very poorly for this album. Although I felt the same way about "the bucket" when I heard that a few months ahead of "heartbreak", and I think that albums is great, but not as good as "manhood". Since this song seems to be "the bucket pt. II (the slower crappier version)" I'd say the album could still be pretty good. I'm all for writing new music, experimenting and whatnot but bottom line the music has to be GOOD and if every song on this album is like this one I must say, unfortunately IT WILL BLOW!

The first time I heard this song live, it gave me goosebumps. Jared's bass line seemed way more prevalent and driving than it does on the studio track...and at the beginning with the synth I almost thought I was listening to Depeche Mode or something. This song is no 'Trani', but for what it is, it's pretty damn awesome. I think everyone who is dissappointed in their new sound and thinking they sold out are missing the point that they are doing this on purpose. The Kings have said time and time again that the fact that they are from the South shouldn't pigeonhole them forever in the category of whiskey-rock. If anything everyone should be MORE excited for the new stuff because this has obviously showed us that we shouldn't know what to expect!

Wow - I cant believe you guys dont like it?!?! Tough crowd to please. The solo is tight, the base line is tight, the vocals are tight, the lyrics are fresh...the guys are growing up, ya'll. Grow with or just keep looping YYM and ASH. This new album is going to be very different. I've seen'em play On Call live 5 times and I was totally taken by it. Sure they stole from Depeche Mode, all great bands do. And the vocal overlapping is clearly for effect. I dig it. Its new, Its KOL and it makes me wanna buy the album. Win, Win and Win! See it live and tell me if you change your mind. video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7726964426548083883&sourceid=docidfeed&hl=en

Hello,
I think it a nice dirty, grimey and nasty sounding new song, almost a little different sounding from it's live rendition, damn you Pro-Tools! Overall, the basswork on it is exceptional and the guitarwork is perfectly placed, amazing and sure to be a "grower" for me on repeated listens! By the way, does anyone have a "Audio rip" of this from MySpace they could upload here? If so, thanks in advance for the help and Cheers!

Since I saw the bulletin informing the music was available I didn't get to stop hearing!! I felt chill of the head to toe, "On Call" was the perfect choice!! The music is so beautiful, Caleb's vocal is so amazing, guitar, bass, drums and backing vocal, everything is too perfect!!! I think they're growing artistically a lot! The boys began in great style, It could not have been better! By the way I love the lyrics too, the intro OMG! God blesses those talented boys!!!!! "On Call" touch my heart, can't wait for the new record!! KOL is my favor rock'in'roll band, no doubt!!!!!!

This song is definately a grower.
At first I though it was sorta mediocre, but now I'm getting it. The synth and the beginning guitar line aren't my favorite, but it still fits, and it's something new for them. The bass is great, I think it's strong without overwhelming the rest of the parts. The guitar solo is almost heart-wrenching. The vocal effects give it a slight echo effect, which makes it seem like they're playing in a stadium. It'd be much better without the synth, just vocals; Caleb has a strong voice by itself. The beginning guitar lines are too fuzzy. They (almost) remind me of something emo, which is a direction I'd rather not see KOL go. It's big and it's better live; that's a definate.
As a single, it doesn't strike me as something meant for radio play. Maybe that's just because American radio sucks and only plays neo-post-grungecore/metal/pop-emo/you get the idea. I think they've stryed more from their country roots in this, while stile keeping the emotion and lyrics that come with a good country song.
Even if you don't like the sound they're trying to get, you know that with a KOL album you have a lot of quality songs, not just one or two hit singles like most of the crap out there. That why you have to wait for the album to really judge this. It'll probably be an album meant to be an album. This isn't some sellout band who makes songs for ringtones. They're a band who looks at how an album reflects them as artists and won't release a song if they don't think it's good enough.

It's good. But different. I think growing artistically isn't a bad thing. Just because it doesn't sound like their older stuff doesn't mean it can't be good.
Don't know if it's just me, but have the effects of touring with U2 rubbed off on them?
Oh and the vocal effect - that's called Gated Reverb (the tail of the reverb is cut short, sounds very unnatural). It's quite a bold choice for a vocal effect, and I presume it somehow ties in with the lyrics - ie. all part of the production. Part of vocal production is have the sound of the voice (backing vocals, double tracking, phasing, etc) complement the lyrics. So I presume that this effect is doing that somehow, but seeing as nobody knows the full lyrics/meaning of the song, it's hard to judge.

I heard it for the first time this morning. I loved it. I woke up and yet the song lulled my lazy brain back to sleep. Melancholy. Sweet. I love it. I could have been so wrong, but it's just so right.
I can't wait. I know it's being released in the US on the 3rd, but I wish they'd push it to the 7th for a totally and completely ridiculous reason: it's my birthday then.
And, that would be something amazing to look forward to.
I. Love. It.
It reminds me of my dreams, my meditations, and my youth.

God, i don't know what I think of it yet. The vocal effects are def different. He sounded like an old man with a lisp. Everything seemed turned DOWN to me as opposed to turned UP as they said it would be....

i like it, it is different, calebs voice is sounding amazing, and i bet its fantastic live,
also..i wouldnt start criticising their new album yet...this is one track off of it, and more than likely, theyl have a diverse range of songs and styles interpreted in the album
their are so many bands out their who keep releasing albums that are sounding just the same, at least theyve had the guts to experiment and try new things. i like it, and cant wait for the album

My initial reaction is that it's too polished and over articulate. The live cuts sounded much more dirtier, raw and bigger so its kind of a shock, as I was expecting something more along those lines. I hate how the reverb on his voice cuts off. I'm not too sure about the reverb effects they are using on the bass and guitars, may be a little cheesy. I'm ok with the synth, but it would work better if the instruments kept up with the scale that its foreshadowing. I just dont feel like it ever takes off for me.
Its a good song, I just dont totally dig the way the put everything together here. But I do like it, and I think things bode well for this album.
