Kelly and Talia, karma when I can, everything you said what spot-on! I'm glad there are people out there that feel this way and can actually articulate it (and make sense). Thanks I am glad what i said made sense to someone else other than me. It is funny things always make sense in my head but not always to other people

i'm hoping this next album is more BOTT/ASH/YAYM - like with OBTN they lost their quirkyness and i love KoL's quirkyness..so yeah i hope this next album has a closer-to-old-stuff sound, but i'd still like it to be different......yeahhhh. wait - no. i just...this next album can be whatever it's going to be - i just hope it doesn't go in the OBTN direction, you know?

wonder who voted for OBTN? I know loads of people who think OBTN is their most qualitative album yet. Some people just aren't into rougher stuff they did earlier I guess..

Hhmmm...............not really feeling able to cast a vote - the closest category would be the I'll follow them no matter what one, but really I can't say that. I will always love their music that I love already, they have such potential and I'm excited to think that this is a band that wants to develop and grow and I will always defend their position on that whenever I have to. But that doesn't necessarily mean I will like all their future stuff. Which is OK I don't want them having any regrets. First over anything I want them to produce music they are excited about and proud of. If/when they aren't able to do that I would rather they called it a day. I'm just repeating what I've said several times before, but I'm adding that I'm really looking forward to the next album

As much as I would like i dont think they will go down the YAYM and ASH route again...OBTN has brought them great commercial success and the all important radio airplay. I doubt the lyrics of the earlier albums would permit them being played at an early time of day sooo... Id love if they would get down and dirty with the music again!!

Yeah, but they're the people who like U2 and Keisar Chiefs (haha, that one's for you Jenny!) I voted it's what I dream about, because it is what I dream about, even though I never say it here.

The need to make whatever music comes "next" for them. I'm guessing it will appeal to me in a new, different, and hopefully interesting way. OBTN is not my favorite album, so what?
Crawl is scorching live.... and sped up just a bit, could have been a single off YAYM. Cold Desert was incredible live. Use Sombody, a rather simple song with an uncomplicated solo by Matt is great stuff. Be Somebody was a great sing-along live.
Anyone wanting YAYM again, or ASH again, well, you're out of luck. Bands change. people grow, hell, these boys have grown up. It's all about perspective people. Mabye my age (closer to 40 than 30) gives me greater insight to these kinds of things, but I'm constantly amazed at the lack of foresight on these boards regarding this topic.
They have girlfriends, fiancee's, etc. You think they willl EVER write a song like SOFT again?

Since we can't recreate the past or control others' creative outputs, GO SEE THE WHIGS live. They rocked my face off last night. They have the energy of the King's earlier days and sound like a beautifully loud combination of Nirvana, Neal Young, old R.E.M, and a bit of The Strokes. They're raw and catchy and have satisfied my yearning for more YAYM/ASH.

I haven't spent time reading this thread so I don't know if I am reiterating anything thats been said but....
I loved how slow and not complicated and straight forward their first two records were. Which were mostly because they weren't able to play their instruments that well (Well, except Nathan). I think the progression is partially because they are more comfortable and just better musicians overall.
However, their more complicated songs, like Knocked Up, can not be dismissed either.
I would love for them to just make a more raw album but still complicate it a bit. I do feel OBTN was a bit too produced but its also due to the fact that they can play their instruments better as well.
Oh, and I am the one vote for OBTN is their best record yet option. I think that record was able to capture both kinda, levels of musicianship they were at. I don't want them to repeat themselves though.
Basically, I am just rambling because I can't as a fan, say that I completely want them to go in a particular direction over another. I want to be surprised. Either negatively or positively, I want the element of surprise.

I think ill follow them no matter what cause we'll always have YAYM and ASH! OBTN isnt my favourite but I do still love it and who knows what other different, amazing sounds they have to produce, if they "go back" we might miss all that............that said, if ASH sound is their rootsy, true to KOL way then Im all for it

I hope one day this topic will wear itself out too, its been rehashed and replayed now...time for some bridge building imo.
