But if they start yodeling or break out the didgeridoos or something, then I'm out. (Actually no, not really. I'd still give it a listen. If it was too crazy I'd wait it out 'til the next album. I love these boys. )

I think it is good that they are growing and changing as artists. There is nothing i dislike more than a band that just keeps on churning out the same thing over and over again (think Nickleback). I think the fact that they keep pushing the boundaries and producing new and interesting stuff is what makes them great. Well it is for me any way.

I think that the fact that they are experimenting with new sounds (for them) and going to a place that some fans may not like is clearly pushing the boundaries. They may have lost a few fans from the YAYM and AHA days and they would surely have know that this would happen with the differences between albums and yet they still did it. They have done AHA and YAYM and what would be the point of doing the same album again? And who is to say what direction they should have headed after BOTT? I say as long as they make an album they are happy with and that they can deal with then that is the right direction. Also i think that some of the songs from BOTT and OBTN are excellent songs - Arizona, Cold Desert etc
P.S - Would it be pushing the boundaries to do AHA or YAYM again?

Great question. I suppose it wouldn't be progress. I would like more simple tunes like the first two records but a complete change of sound wouldn't seem right.
Unless it comes naturally to them.

Honestly i like lots of different types of music and as long as i like what they make i will continue to listen and when and if the time comes that i out grow the kings or they out grow me then i will move on. Hope it doesn't happen as i am totally obsessed at the moment P.S. - I do love the tunes from AHA just as much as i love OBTN what i like depends wholly and soley on my mood.

I voted that i will follow them no matter what...cos i will. I feel indebted to them for giving us so much great music that ive really enjoyed listen to and has made me very happy on many occasions. And i can honestly say they have never written a song that i dont like.
I really enjoyed OBTN but in a different way to YAYM and ASH (and even BOTT) because it was a different sound...but its still a side of KOL. The YAYM sound is only one side to KOL and one of the things i love most about them are that they are versatile musicians and they can make great music no matter what the genre.
As people the band have evolved and become more mature and so naturally so will their music. They've already shown the world that they can master the YAYM sound/genre and i can only guess as serious musicians they want to showcase their full range of musical abilities by creating a wider range of music.
If you look at all the top bands through the years, they've all evolved in the same way and thats whats kept them popular over many years and what ultimately has made them into GREAT bands. In 30 years time, i want people to be talking about how KOL are one of the greatest bands ever, in the same way people talk about the stones or the beatles now.
Personally, i am bloody grateful that i get to be a fan of such a great band when they're at their peak!!

I don't see how OBTN isn't pushing any boundaries actually? Songs like Closer, Cold Desert, Crawl, I Want You, ... all very unique in my point of view. Even producingwise, ever since I started studying Music at uni I've been taught to actually listen to everything in a song. And honestly, OBTN is pretty boundarybreaking, my professors (all important music techs and such) were all so enthusiastic about the sound of this album.
And I REALLY don't hear anything remotely sounding like U2, I still don't get how there's people out there saying they went 'U2' on us. What the fuck. 'stadium' sounds weren't invented by U2. If I recall correctly, even Gun 'N Roses was stadiumesque.
The only thing I can object to this album is that some songs are more radio-friendly. But what the heck, they're still good songs. Use Somebody is epic, and if more people like them because of this song (and SOF), well good on 'em, it's about time.

At first I was all for ASH back, but I realise now it wouldn't BE ASH,or their old style.
So,I'll always prefer the oldies, but as long as it's all good music count me in.

Kelly and Talia, karma when I can, everything you said what spot-on! I'm glad there are people out there that feel this way and can actually articulate it (and make sense).
