i actually love this album! i know some people are not liking it as much as others but its a great album, although its not my favourite, but thats nothing to do with the quality of this album! I love every song on it and at the moment im sort of rediscovering sex on fire, and i totally love i want you and cold desert and notion and crawl all the songs are great! and i just love the fact that some, if not all of this album was recorded when caleb had a tache! haha, i loved his tache, haha

God this album is so smooth it disturbs me! It's like taken all the best production parts of BOTT and then gone overboard with it. Gorgeously produced songs and some very stand out tracks to last a long time, but my god! It's kinda a bit boring because of it. I always respected this album cause i was proud of the musical accomplishment, the fact it was on record but it's like oh goddd, maybe it's just the mood i'm in, but hello?! this albm is nothing more than some half baked ideas of the kings touched by some of the best producers - whatever they are, knob twiddlers - people out there. i dunno, i just hear everything that bored me about BOTT. it's a great album ok. it's just bland. caleb, dear, this ain't our album! it ain't the particular style of song/s, it's just lacking in something.
what the fck is this album, seriously?! please. i must be in a bad mood cause it's like all i hear is something that could have been good but should have been scrapped. it's just disappointing and i've been trying so hard to get beyond the obvious but it's like i don't even care to do that anymore. some great songs. they're the kings, great origins, but this album it feels like it's being carried by some knob twiddler.
edit: oooo that just came out all wrong! i just don't like it. it's not the style of song i don't care what they do, i love the way they play, the way they play together, that's what's important to me. it's just a bit too bland, for what they can do. oh it's so difficult to put my finger on, not the style, oh it's jst, calculated?

Hey Whiskers, liked your posts, both of them. Thoughtful. it's a great album, just not a great kings album. i think that sums it up for me. Here's what I think - and I am not being unappreciative of this album just in case anyone thinks i am! To me it seems like it's the kings are great, a lot of the songs are great, but this album only reaches as far as good. That seems to me very much like what you're saying, whiskers. To me it seems that the live versions of so many songs I have heard from this album just have more LIFE in a way that's very obvious. I know that happens, but with the kings, til now, I have not really felt this way to such a degree. Bland and smooth are as good a pair of words as any - I don't think all of it's bland, by any means, but it's definitely in the mix! I have not seen them play live in person yet - I'm really looking forward to June cos then I am expecting to be floored by some of these 'stand out tracks' as you called them. I think the production suffocates some of the songs. I think there probably was not enough discernment or self control in the knob twiddling department, and I think that is ultimately down to the kings themselves. They were definitely looking for something, so yes, calculated. They've said as much in interviews. Little boys with a train set believing they really are the Fat Controller. I think they had a ball trying all sorts of things, going with all kinds of suggestions being put to them, getting over excited by the gadgetry. Running after something. Nothing wrong with gadgetry, but if you're a gadget virgin, premature ejaculation is a risk. It'll be interesting to see what they do about the production on the next album. In any case, you can't fault their independence and balls, I think there's a good chance they will take a lot on board from OBTN. I like OBTN, it really is a good album overall, but I find I don't listen to it much these days - when I do I still get taken by surprise by the bits I love (and I do love them), but it hasn't got my heart. edit - oh, and in my overinflated opinion it is an album with one of the best openings!

I love it.
It's expansive. It's ambitious. It rocks hard. It plays softly.
The band grew up and made a record that reflected that. Nobody in life has development that goes backwards.
I love it.

wow ticboo thanks for your reply i don't really know what i think of this album and i think i was too harsh with some of what i said, i change my mind all the time about it but i do still have a problem with it's smoothness. i'll leave it there cause i ain't got a clue what i'm trying to say.

I must admit, when I got OBTN, I wasn't that impressed. BUT... as whiskers said at the beginning of this thread, I gave it time, and it has grown on me. Its quite different from the other records (I think that's what put me off at first), but the more you listen to it, the more you start to like it. I love all the songs on it now... Manhattan, Closer, Crawl, Revelry, Notion... Its awesome!

I this album stinks to be honest like seriously WTF it could be mistaken for the plethora of blandness out there esp. in comparison to their previous albums. If the next album is as mediocre as this il crack up

Hey! I'm new here and had no idea that "17" was so hated! I personally love that song, and I'm an old school KOL fan. I think that if you don't quite "get it" yet you should maybe go and listen to The Proclaimers murder it completely. It sure made me appreciate it a lot more! Anyhow I'm completely biased and think KOL can do no wrong
