Have to say it - this song has never made me cry.
not once.
Townes van Zandt on the other hand made me cry, right after the pregnant wife died one cold night under the bridge ("Marie"). Even though I thought the song was really corny and sentimental.
Cold Desert is one of my favourites off the album. I think of it kind of like a diamond in the rough, I s'pose. As for the fading in and out I would prefer it wasn't there, I don't care what the back story is. Sometimes I keep the volume up manually and then leave it to get louder (really loud). Works for me - it just swamps you. Amazing.

Why does the song fade in and out? I always wondered cos it doesn't make much sense to make the song drastically quieter in the middle of the song...?

My fav song by far, it just means so much to me and sums up why Kings of Leon are more than a band. I got engaged to it so yeah, good song.

Oh thats quite an image...Caleb singing his heart out one minute, and then the next minute his head is slumped down, eyes closed, then suddenly out of nowhere he pops up,eyes wide open,''HERE'S TO YOOUUU! HERES TO MEEEE!"

^ That is a funny mental image. XD Hey guys, could I get your collective opinions? I'm in love with this band called Light Pollution, but I swear the beginning of their song is dead on the beginning of Cold Desert. profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=10948720In retrospect, I guess it's not a super mind-boggling thing. Both songs have fairly simple intros and it's only for a tiny bit. It just threw me for a loop the first time I heard it.

Ack, I never mentioned what song it was! It's called The Only Thing...the last one on the page. It takes a while to start up, but yeah...it's dead on.
As for the fading thing...I adore it. But I definitely think it was a conscious choice. One of the guys being clever. It brings to mind like the guys are playing in front of you and then they start to leave, but they love you so much that they just have to come back.

I remember the first time I heard Cold Dessert , I got chills it is definetly one of my favorite songs. Listening to it live this past Thursday actually had me crying, it is honestly one of the most beautiful yet saddest songs ever. Also the image of Caleb falling asleep to it (whether true or not) makes him all the more adorable.

Just the line...
"..I'm too young to feel this old..." - the f in feel makes me well up. Silly maybe, but you can just picture it, Caleb really spitting it out... *sniff*

Probably my favourite song off the album (along with I want you), but I seriously get chills when I listen to it. I love listening to it sitting on my window at night, its gorgeous. The lyrics get my everytime, especially the 'Jesus dont love me' part, I love it SO MUCH.

Perhaps it was alcohol induced but I cried my eyes out the whole way Cold Desert at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night. So emotional.

I can honestly say that there aren't very many songs that really have an affect on me, but this one does. in fact I can't listen to it much because it makes me too sad... the line 'I'm too young to feel this old' really hits me hard, because that's exactly how I feel about my life
