This is one of my favorites too...i especially love how Matt's guitar and Caleb's voice do the same melody for part of it,and how echoey it sounds! I have to watch that video to get the story about it. uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EhBdPEaNj-gOH MY GOD! I had to wipe my eyes before i could reply to this...i just watched that video...That was the most beautiful honest bittersweet moment i've ever seen of any musician i think! Damn, not much makes me cry...So,he was piss ass drunk when he sang that song?! Coulda fooled me,i thought he sounded great on it! And he seriously didnt have most of the lyrics already, cuz they rhyme and make sense and thats a hard thing to accomplish when you're drunk Wow. You get karma for posting that for me,my eyes are still filled with tears,i gotta put that song in now *sniff* and WHY does he think Jesus doesnt love him!?!?!?

Up to now I liked this song but last night in Dublin it actually made me cry. I don't know why but it was just overwhelming. Exactly how I felt...was boppin my tushie off for the best part of two hours, but then they played THAT and - well, realised at the end I was holding my breath, could barely move and had stuffed my scarf in my gob...just unbelievable. ^^^and rockchick, 'mazin innit? Always wondered, the bit in the vid where he's sat looking sideways, hand to his mouth and he's just been talking about playing it back for the first time, his expression when it gets to 'Jesus don't love me'....the vid's either bloody inspirationally edited or that was the moment he actually heard it for the first time....killer.

I totally agree,i just cant breathe when i watch this, and my eyes fill up. I have been so drunk that i dont remember things i say and i would never be able to record a song while in that state,i wish i could give karma to Caleb for that

it's deffinitly my favorite song on the cd. and as if there was a reason needed to love the home videos, but I love actually hearing about how it was recorded, it has to be one of the most soul-bearing moments from any recording artist, ever. you don't get much more real than that!!

This is absolutely a gorgeous, gorgeous song. My favorite lyrics are after the music fades away and there's nothing but Jared's bass and Matthew's guitar whispering in the background, and Caleb comes back to us with a heartbroken toast: "Here's to you, here's to me." It's something in the way he says it...it's just so much feeling in those few words...I don't even know! When I saw them live it was like a religious experience. I couldn't even look at them, I could only close my eyes and focus on the song. (Which is saying a lot. )

I cant even function when that song is playing.

I have a question about this song,i dont know why i didnt think of it before cuz i have known the story about the recording of it for over a week now...but is that the reason why the volume goes way down and then back up,because the guys running the equipment thought they were done but then Caleb starting singing again so he turned it back up? I mean if thats the only version of the song and thats how it was recorded thats the only believable answer i can think of...and if thats true, that is so cool! I still can't get over that story, damn! *gets chills justs thinking about it*

I seriously love that they shared the sory about how it was made, most bands I think would just let it be known to themselves and the people closest to them, so I love they shared it with the fans, it makes them that much more real and human... I FREAKING LOVE THIS SONG!!!

oh grr. why does Caleb wanna drink like that for. fckhead! i totally respect Jared for what he said in the Q interview about quitting altogether if it meant his brother would too. i'd give karma to Jared for that if i could.
i love the part when the song fades back up. like it's still there and it's still happening. makes the song more alive as it shows the continuity of the emotion, that it's not just a snapshot and that's all it is, it can change and it can move.
my favourite line in the song and the one that also at the same time sums up how i feel when i hear it, is; i never, ever, cried when i was feeling down, i've always been scared of the sound. Caleb gets half a karma for that.

I love this song but when i first heard it, i was in a really bad way and was depressed for a few weeks and the only thing that kept me happy was watching the home movies, then the cold desert home movie came on and im not joking i howled watching it, caleb just connected with me, everything he said i felt! it was just too much i couldnt honestly listen to that song, every time i did i just broke down. I only started listening to it properly about a month ago, and it is a truly beautiful song, its very raw. it breaks my heart that caleb feels that way sometimes and i just want to tell him how much that song connected with me and how amazing he is for being honest about it and letting us all see that side of him. for that the boy deserves a thousand karmas!

Absolutely. It breaks my heart to hear something so pure and beautiful come out of something so ugly.

this song is beyond beatiful. i love it with all my heart. i can't help but well up with tears everytime i hear it, depending on my mood i may just let myself go and completely start balling.
i feel a tear run down my cheek everytime i watch the 'cold desert' home movie when caleb recounts what jacquire? says 'i have felt like that all my life' after hearing the lyrics 'jesus don't love me'
not much can describe this song, perhaps 'perfection' is all that can be said.

I'm pretty sure when I heard this live it changed my whole life. I just had an epiphiny and everything in my life seemed to make sense...that sounds sooo stupid but it was just a stop and stare moment, mouth dropped and my body incapable of movement.

when i saw yeah yeah yeahs live a couple years ago they played 'maps' slower than usual and it made me nearly cry so i don't know what i would do if i heard 'cold desert' live. i'd probably become a blubbering fool. and i wouldn't care one bit how i looked.

and why should you? oh god, yr epiphiny rara, when i saw them last, there were like 3 maybe 5 songs where i couldn't actually dance -and i always dance- i was just hugging myself and unable to sing or anything, i just let myself take it all in and embrace whatever it was the song made me feel. it made the whole thing more special. the dark and the light ... so true!

Oh god, SOOOO fab that loads of other peeps couldn't move either.... it just did something to my boogy/sing/breathe reflexes, stunned them into immobility Makes me sad I might not get to feel that way again for a while...unless I save up all my pennies for Manchester in June when all the scratbags who bought tickets on the strength of one song get bored and switch their allegiance to the new flavour of the month and post their ticks on ebay. Hurrah for scratbags!
