Came across this today, Rolling Stone review of the new album.
Free from their strict Pentecostal father, Kings of Leon's Followill brothers (plus cousin Matthew) spent their first two records establishing themselves as horny Nashville youngsters with a neo-garage-rock style that got them tagged as the "Southern Strokes." Nowadays, the Kings are feeling a different sound: Like last year's Because of the Times, Only by the Night is long on astral, arena-ready largeness, with blippy keyboards, droney guitars and whoa-oh-oh backing vocals. Frontman Caleb Followill cranks up his Allman Brothers howl, turning out big choruses with sometimes tough-to-parse lyrics and deep-feeling melodies reportedly influenced by pain meds he began taking after shoulder surgery. The revamped sound doesn't always work: Cuts like the slow-burning murk-fest "Cold Desert" feel like sub-John Mayer soul — bland and overly ponderous. But when the Kings find a gussied-up groove with teeth — like the effects-laden Zeppelin stomp of "Crawl" or the pulsating, New Wave "Sex on Fire" — they sound like rock heroes experiencing the joy of well-manicured sound.
It got 3 stars out of 5.

The Jonas Brothers? 4 stars? Kings of Leon? 3 stars? Something is amiss...

Hello,
Jesus "Santa Claus" Christ....true, this Christian Hoard must be a new writer for Rolling Stone whom didn't receive the RCA Records "review with a high star rating" bribe money. The whole review itself is rather "under adjectively" infantile, duely noted, they loved the "maturing new sound from BOTT", this time with "OBTN: BOTT Volume 2", they were too bloody "nitpicky"....the American music magazine continues to fester to nothingness as always. *Shakes his head in dismay at Rolling Stone writers as they queue up in a nice single file line to collect their record industry label pop acts bribe money*
Sincerely, ~JamiroFan2000~

This solidifies my hate of Rolling Stone. Though I'd still love to see the Kings grace it's cover... Only one I'd ever buy.

I'm sorry, but comparing Crawl to Led Zeppelin, is an insult to Led Zeppelin.

I have it somewhere in my room.. they also did a 10-15 page spread on the kings... a really cool photo shoot where they stuck the boys with all these models and took raucous photos.

Hello again,
To dispel any further "angry discussion" about whom is the best guitarist, melodic historical guitar riffwise, it's a tie between Jimmy Page & Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) & as for guitar playing prowess, it's a 3 way tie between Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix & Eddie Van Halen. In regards to the RS KOL spread from 04, that was the first indicator that the Kings had taken the RCA image cronies advice to drop the 'taches N' beards, burn their dungarees/rock band T-Shirts and pretend to be "rock n roll sophisticated". And god, what a bad move that was....
Sincerely, ~JamiroFan2000~

If you think this is bad, don't read the Pitchfork review.

People! I have been a KOL fan since the beginning, however I feel this review was spot on. You might not want to hear this, but once you start to open up and come completely out of your 'kings of leon euphoria' you will begin to realize that this album is good, yet not great. In fact I would call it average, and I am one of their biggest fans. Just because someone else doesn’t like the album this does not give you the right to bash to reviewer. It's a free world, and people have their own opinions. Just as if, let’s say one of you were to become a critic for a world-wide famous music magazine, cough RS, you would probably give this a 4 or 4.5/5 just because you are a fan...
The album is a rushed effort. The band admitted it themselves when they said they would release an album if they got the Glastonbury gig... The band is definitely going in a new direction, which kind of upsets me, yet at the same time it shows me that they are widening their musical spectrum. My only beef with this transition is that they rushed into it way too fast. I feel if they would have waited another year to release their next album, it would have been an overall better production. I will still go to their shows, and I will still be fan, however this album only has a few keepers on it.... Go ahead and roll your eyes now, however one day they will release an album that you are not fond of and have the same feelings as I am having now... Trust me. Every GREAT (i emphasize this word because they will be GREAT) band has an album like this. Lets just hope the boys take some much needed time off before they release their next album.

i'm not entirely impressed with this album but i'd still give it a 4. it's definitely a 4. it's not a bad album. we just know they can do better than that and that's why we expect so much.

although the review is a bit childish like JamiroFan said i.e. the same old introduction as sons of a preacher (this is their fourth album can we please get over that fact!!) and the Allman brothers comparison (payed out) i think he is right about OBTN being basically a BOTT ver. 2.0. Besides this isn't their first 3 stars they've received, ASH got a 3.5 stars and i think that album is way better than OBTN.
and come on guys lets not forget that Rolling Stone is one of the few American mags who basically started covering them since the beginning and has shown tremendous love for them, so just because they gave OBTN an allright review (not even a horrible one at that) does not make them Enemy #1.
