Yeah, like personally if KOL had released four YAYM style albums I'd be complaining then! lol...But I do think it will be interesting to see people's reactions to YAYM and ASH for example, if they just get into the band cos of this record... *edit* That sentence made sense in my head! haha

I'm still somewhat undecided about some aspects of the album (not unusual for a KoL album), but for me, Cold Desert by itself makes up for everything. It's priceless - a true piece of musical history - and it even has it's own signature KoL quirk: a bit of subtle whistling at around 7 seconds in.

Is it fair to say Cold Desert is very Arizona/Knocked Up-esque? As soon as i seen this song title as the closing track i couldnt wait to hear it. Thankfully it didnt disappoint. I agree with 'couldabeenawonder' a little bit in the sense that Cold Desert brings up the albums average. I just remember when i first heard BOTT last year and how excited i was with each track. Sadly it hasnt happened this time, but there are still some quality and classic KOL tracks on OBTN. Cold Desert topping the bill for me. then, in my '2nd favourites/great songs' are Closer, Sex On Fire, Use Somebody and Be Somebody. then it goes to 'good tracks' involving; Crawl, Notion, Reverly, I Want You, Manhattan. Sadly the one song i cant get into is 17:( although i will do my best too over the next few days where i will no doubt play this album to death thanks for the smite by the way.

This could be the first KOL album that is a "Grower" Cold Desert is a massive stand out for me. I'm a couple of listens through now and Sex on fire and Use Somebody are probably the two obvious singles on the record.
The main problem i have with the record is that its massively over-produced. Its far too clean in every aspect, every thing is crisp and perfect. No little Knocked up door openings going on here. Its sounds like if even a hair dropped during recording they would have done another take.
And there are far too many "wooo ooooh, ooooh hoooo's" going on backing wise. Even though i sound as if i'm slating. Its still a good record. But GOOD being the opertive word, Its not up to the standards of the previous records by a long chalk in my opinion.
Just my opinion, like i say it sounds like a grower and not the usual KOL "WOW" when u first listen.
Go on super smite me now people lol

BOTT was definately a grower for me, and OBtN is shaping up that way too. I have found one quirky bit so far - 7 seconds into Cold Desert Caleb gives a little whistle (a bit like in Knocked Up).

Having listened to this album about 20 times now, I feel it is the Kings weakest to date. Still love alot of the tracks and it pisses all over most stuff released nowadays, but I feel its missing the rawness that made them unique. Its a mainstream album (record company driven), with alot of their censored/inuendo lyrics missing. I feel Calebs voice is too clean and the hardness is missing.Sorry for being negative. That said, Closer is awesome, as is Notion, Be Somebody & Manhattan and Cold Desert is a top closing track.
Finally, in an interview with the NME, they said drugs nearly wreaked them and this Album is drugfree. One message boys - Go visit Doctor Robert

I don't think they count pain pills or weed as drugs man lol If you can go to rehab for it, its a drug. In this case, they're both drugs. Although weed isn't addicting unless laced with something else.

I know, I agree.
But it seems like the Kings don't. As they have criticised others for using drugs recently as well as stated they are clean and the album is drug free. Clearly from the home movies and the fact that Caleb kept talking about the pain meds helping with his melody making, the album is not drug free.

i think this is my first post here.. and honestly i`m not really happy with the album... i miss the good old days of spiral staircase, 4 kicks, molly`s chambers and things like that. i mean it sound cool (espcially use somebody, sex on fire, be somebody and crawl) but i prefer the old KOL

why are there so many good ideas on this album... that are then ruined by others. grrr.... thou shalt never rush an album! I can kind of understand what your saying with the great ideas ruined by others man... Not necessarily ruined, but it does seem rushed in some spots, for instance... Use Somebody feels like it was rushed big time, between the overall sound of the track ( the instrumental sounds squished together and recorded on an old school tape recorder) and the odd unfit change into the lead guitar solo just sounds over (maybe under i don't know) thought... don't get me wrong, great song still... And my favorite track by far is Cold Desert... The guys melodies have just gotten amazing. It sounds like he's pouring out his heart and soul on this track. The music is eerie and brings out some real emotion to the listener (at least to me) thats what i look for in a great song. That being said, i can't stand that fade out/back in at the end... What were they thinking??? with that said it's an amazing album and with these flaws comes something to really look forward to. It makes me think of old school Nirvana (not necessarily music wise, but thought wise). The musical changes Nirvana made on some songs from demo to album to live in concert were amazing. it showed the song actually growing and evolving with every time you heard it. You have to think about how KoL are going to let these rushed songs grow in their live shows. a few have fade outs, a few have things you just can't do live, which means they all have to evolve a bit. And that alone is why music is such a huge part of my life. Each song is like a living being in ways, and even though the album has been recorded, these songs are in no way finished. I bet when we hear these songs a year or two from now we'll be amazed at what they've become!! Sorry bout the length, just a little stoked about the potential this album holds!!! Agree or no?? oh yeah, I Want You?? sounds like Caleb's watching a bit too much porn nowadays hehe

I have listened to the album a few more times and although it has grown on me I feel it is thier weakest album to date and they should have kinda gone back to thier roots and rocked harder like Jared said they were doing. It doesn't really sound like KOL. I mean obviously you have Calebs vocals but it doesn't seperate them really from other bands out there like their previous albums did . A few songs on there are good but I don't see why every one loves Cold Desert and Be Somebody, I think Revelry and Sex On Fire are about the best songs on there at the moment. I dunno, maybe all the songs will grow on me more.

I think Cold Desert is heartbreaking, the lyrics, the vocals and the music all combine together to create this beautiful expression of Caleb's heart.
Thats what it does for me anyway.
I think they were entitled to make a more relaxed album, they hadn't done it yet. They don't need to have a reputation as being a band who for the majority of an album only create upbeat, hard rockin tracks. They are shedding any pre-conceptions about them.
Listened to it all night, actually woke up with Cold Desert playing as I had fallen asleep whilst listening lol
Love it.

Sadly the one song i cant get into is 17:( although i will do my best too over the next few days where i will no doubt play this album to death same! the first time i heard it i was like.. what is going on here? but i've listened to it quite a bit (like jonathan i feel asleep to the album last night) and its growing on me, but its still def the worst one. all songs on here are awesome im my opinion, the only one that i would class as "ok" are seventeen, all of the others have a little something classicly kol that make me love them. by far the stand outs are 'cold desert' for the heartbreaking lyrics, 'closer' because matts guitar is so good, and 'revelry' i dont know why. i just love it
