Can you really blame them? No! Bootlegging is stealing from the artist- taking from them, revenue and such, and giving to others for free. It's all wrong. To me bootlegging is thievery. Do you like it when people steal from you?

Uh oh. BBC played Manhattan at Glastonbury though and that got ripped etc? Surely this is the case for every band? And studio quality is always so much better so it still guarantees (sp?) record sales. I can see where they're coming from though

Do you like it when people steal from you? Firstly, let me be clear, I wasn't saying that 'stealing' is okay. I was simply posting the article to see what everyone thinks. I think its kind of hypocritical in a way. People get all hyped up and super excited when new material is posted on here, but then they are going to say bootlegging is wrong?? Just seems a little off to me. I see both sides. They make a good point that having to worry about stuff leaking kind of spoils it for them to play new stuff live before its released, but at the same time, its like that for every band. I could go into a whole rant about music sharing, but I'm afraid certain people wouldnt like what i have to say, so i will keep that to myself for fear of smiters (but if anyone is interested, here is a wicked interesting blog i read www.demonbaby.com/blog/2007/10/when-pigs-fly-death-of-oink-birth-of.html) . I was just curious because this is the place where we all share things (helloooooooo we have a SHARE STUFF section dedicated to it), what everyone thought of the article and the guys' views on it. That is all.

You asked "what do you think?".....And I told you. That's all. Let's leave it at that. For those that do get excited and record songs and gigs to post because they are excited, there are those that abuse the right and that's what's wrong with bootlegging. You're just giving it away for free.

Agreed. I'm there with you. I do think they have a point. I think there are 2 kinds of people. People who just love the band and cannot wait for new stuff, but will still absolutely buy the album (and t-shirts and posters and on and on) when it comes out.. then there are those who will download the bootlegs/album and never pay any money for it- which is not right. For example. I will admit that i had the download of Sex on Fire, just like most other people on here.. but i also went out and bought it from iTunes the day it was released and deleted the other copy from my iPod. But like i said, Matt does have a valid point.

Kings of Leon are a great band, one of my favorites, but it's stuff like this that pisses me off. These guys are starting to get all 'Metallica' on us with their bootlegging/file sharing rants... The thing I loved about KOL in the early years was that they didnt get a fu*k about anything except MUSIC, BOOZE, and SEX. Now they are concerned that footage of a show that one of their FANS took is up on YOUTUBE? Excuse me, but please tell me how footage being posted on youtube is losing money for the band. It sucks that they are slowing becoming more and more greedy about $$$$$$. And for the record, people who take their DAT Recorders/Mics to shows to record the shows are not doing it as a money making venture. They are doing it because they love to do it.
One more thing. Please tell me where I can purchase a "bootlegged" copy of one of their recent shows.... I dont think you can, BECAUSE 99.9% of the RECORDERS GIVE THEM OUT FOR FREE...

People who post bootlegs of shows do it because they themselves are so excited and love the band and want to share their experience. If KoL took a page from Pearl Jam (who have been selling the bootlegs from their shows for years) maybe this discussion wouldnt even be happening. But they dont- no fault of theirs i'm sure.. just something they don't do. Like i said. You will always have the people who download bootlegs and torrents of the albums and never intend to buy them. But there are also the die hard fans that just want to hear as many live versions of songs as kings do shows, but will also go out and buy tickets to see the them, buy albums, buy t-shirts etc because they love and WANT to support the band. End of my rant.

I don't think that they mind people recording live shows and putting it on youtube but maybe now when the record isn't release yet they don't want all the new songs to leak out before the album is out. And it's definitely not because of the money, it's not like they're gonna lose money cuz' some badly recorded live clip of a new song is up on youtube.

mookie chill out, they never talked about "losing money". I understand their point of view, Interpol were saying the exact same thing last year. The thing is if they play too many new songs, they're gonna be on youtube and it kinda spoils the whole process of anticipating the new album. I don't know if you see what I mean, but to me it's not about the money it's about being able to surprise the fans with songs they never heard before when the album is released. To me anticipating an album is very important. You wait xx months 'til it's out. You go and buy it, you put it on your record player and you listen to it and read the booklet & stuff for the first time. I never download the leaks when it comes to my favourite bands because I like being surprised.

Lovely_Head - have you noticed a trend lately where the band has been bashing their own fanbase for their mistakes? If not, see below:
-They blame the fans who post new songs on YouTube as the reason why they dont play more "new material". My argument is this: Why blame the fans, when the band themselves have already released TWO singles off an album that hasnt even hit the stores yet. This doesnt include the 2min tease of "Use Somebody". In essence, the band has already OFFICIALLY released 3 songs. LOL
-The recent news about the "Special OBTN EP" that ONLY PEOPLE who buy tickets to their current tour can purchase. Uhhhhhh. Hello?
If an album leaks, I will download it in a heartbeat, yet dont get me wrong. I will also buy the official copy and support the band. Not too mention I will also support the band buy attending shows, buying merch, etc...
I just think their EGOS are getting in the way of what they do best. ROCKING OUT.

I think you're totally missing the point.
Yes they played Manhattan and Crawl at recent shows. Yes they GAVE us Crawl as a FREE d/l. Yes they released SOF as a single. Yes we got to hear a bit of Use Somedy in the home movie. So we got to hear 3 and a half songs and what ? You blame them for giving us these 3 songs ?? If they don't want MORE songs to leak, I can totally understand. They never talked about MONEY. It's all about surprising the fans and not spoiling the anticipation. Come on, they ain't the only band complaining about that ! And we know they're gonna release more home movies in september. I think they just want to keep the surprise for us their fans.
About the Deluxe Edition, I read you can preorder it when you buy a ticket for any of the US shows but I'm 99,9% sure everybody will be able to buy it anyway. A lot of albums never got to be released here in France but I'm still able to buy them on the internet. Same with a lot of "special" ou "deluxe" edition albums.
And again, nether I or the band talked about MONEY. I don't buy all the music I listen to, I can't afford it so I'm not giving lessons or anything. I don't download leaks of high anticipated albums because I think it spoils the surprise and I think everybody should wait for the actual released. I'm pretty sure that's what the band meant.

I misread the article the 1st time, that is why i went into the rant about $$$. My apologies. But to hear the band say that they are "Bashing fans who bootleg live shows because it prevents them from playing new material" is ludacris. It's a slap in my face, because I actually posted the first ever footage of Crawl and Manhattan online. AND I AM A DIEHARD FAN! So they are essentially blaming me? Thats pretty lame if you ask me. If they are soooo worried about spoiling the new album then it's a pretty simple solution.
DONT PLAY ANY LIVE SHOWS UNTIL AFTER THE NEW ALBUM IS RELEASED. LOL.
With that said, I am still a huge fan, but it's little stuff like this that the band says that really bothers me...

One more note to add LOL...... only 1 out of the 4 KOL show's I attended this year had a NO CAMERA/VIDEO policy. Why not enforce that at all gigs if they are whining to the media about "bootleggers spoiling their party"

But the songs aren't being "leaked" if they are playing them to over 1000 people at a gig. I would have thought it would be good free PR for the band to have their songs passed around fans building up the anticipation for the good quality studio recordings.

EXACTLY! How is it bad that I posted footage of Manhattan and Crawl the night after the debuted them? Go look on Youtube and find one negative post about them. All of the posts were positve posts in the lines of "I cant wait for the new album!!" Like you said Black Jeans, posting these songs online is no different than playing them live to 70,000 people at huge festivals.

But you know it's the NME. You can't really trust them. If you read what Matt said (not what the NME wrote), he doesn't "bash" the fans. It's totally exagerated ! They love their fans, that why they're playing so many shows before the release of the album and that's why they don't apply a No Camera policy. Come on the BBC told them not to play new songs at Glasto, but they did anyway ! They just don't want ALL the new songs to leak before the album release and I think it's understandable.
