Hi, I'm itscalledthedark. I'll be in here on occasion to express my Kings of Leon love and spread the gospel of My Morning Jacket, my other favorite band. But the main reason I came here is to get to the bottom of a division among KOL fans. I've noticed that with Because of the Times and the songs we've heard from Only By the Night, there is a large portion of the fanbase who are dissapointed with the new songs, particularly Crawl and Use Somebody.
My question is, what's different about these songs that people have a problem with? I've seen many people calling them subpar, but I'm not getting many explanations.

People just wanna go back to the YAYM days and can't accept the band are developing their sound and changing with every album.
I personally love everything by the Kings so I ain't got no worries about their progression.
Fair enough people can express their opinions that they don't like the newer direction but at the end of the day, its just tough luck for them and the only solution for them...go listen to YAYM.

yeh i think its just some people have come to love a certain sound from the kings of leon wether it be the YAYM days or ASH days. im a big fan of all their music and am loving how their sound has evolved and the new direction there going in however i do have a major soft spot for YAYM and that dirty southern rockabilly they had going on.

I love YAYM it's my favorite so far... but the guy's have expressed themselves that they want to do bigger albums they've toured with some big stadium bands Bob Dylan (ok not stadium but thats where they were), Pearl Jam, U2 and they've been influenced by them. This is how we learn, we look around and take things that we like and do them in our own way and this is how their doing it. I think everyone should give them a break until the album's out until then we shouldn't comment because it may be a whole difrent story then we may have heard the best or the worst we don't know yet.

To be honest I think its impossible to have an opinion about the new album cause none of us have heard it all!!
Some people will complain about anything just cause it makes them feel somewhat important, others may consider themselves musical snobs, wanting to be the fans of relatively small time alternative bands, again, to make them seem important/superior. Others, I guess just dont like the new stuff, and others are KOL fans and will love and follow them through their differing phases of development.
Personally I cant understand how people can expect (or want) another YAYM album....that was years ago. Life and music would be pretty boring if all bands played the same old music over and over. I also think it'd be relatively impossible to do that given that as humans we all change personally over time depending on our life circumstances. Its inevitable (and exciting) that the music will also change and develop.
My advice, if you dont like it, dont listen to it.
So far, I love it all and throw on a different KOL album/playlist depending on the day or mood! It just doesnt get old!!

I agree schnucams! To be honest i think people just need to appreciate and enjoy the time we are at. I mean the kings are never gonna stop changing, with each album they are gonna try different stuff and not everyone is going to like it. Thats just the way it is! And if people dont like a certain album, then just listen to the ones you do like. And I think it is natural to miss certain days. Music has a way of bringing you back to the time when you first fell in love with that song, and u remember everything that was going on in your life at the time and all that. So its natural to be like ohh i well miss those days! So i understand where everyone is coming from with the YAYM thing. I miss it too, but that doesnt mean i dont love where they are now! And we may as well appreciate it while its here, cause they will change again and again! And then u will get people saying ohh i well miss the BOTT days! I think every album has something great about it, and personally i already love every song i have heard off of only by the night. These guys just don't dissappoint me! But hey thats just my ramble there

I dont hate any of the new songs, ive always said im not sure about them but ill give them a chance and im pleased to say they have grown on me to the point where i really like them, I'll always love the YAYM and ASH era because thats when i fell in love with them, their whole dirty rock, we dont give a shit attitude and they were fresh and exciting (like The Strokes) i still love them and im glad they are evolving and developing but i cant help thinking theyve lost some of that soul and edgyness that made me first love them, but on the other hand you have the Strokes (who i also love) but theyve really made 3 albums out of the same sound, they havent really went anywhere with it and i think if the Kings did that then people would be complaining that they have no originality. But i will stick with them, i know i will love the new album even if it does take me a good few listens

A quote from this month's Q, p. 54, Metallica : Of course, the paradox is that your fans never want you to grow up. They demand eternal adolescence.I miss the diamond-in-the-rough feel from the early days and I'm glad I've witnessed the days when Jared still thrashed about on stage. But those feelings are dwarfed by an overwhelming relief that they're off the hard stuff now. Caleb's never looked so disgustingly healthy as now. The guys have grown up. Period. And that has resulted in a more professional sound and a more defined and measured view on their own future. And I salute them for that. But they're still not taking any prisoners. Deep down SoF is a mean little MF and it only shows that they're in full command of their career.
