I really like the new album, i think it's great. It really sounds more fun and energetic than CAS. But i feel that there is something missing that was on the first three records. They had a very unique groove going on on those records and i feel like it's been missing on the last three albums. And i think that the record is over produced and too clean. I think the songs would really benefit if the production was more rough. I would like them to start working with Ethan Johns again. I really liked what he did with their sound. But it's still a great record that beats all the other rock bands out there but compared to their first three records i don't get the same "magic" feeling i'm getting from listening to them.

gurreb, I absolutely agree with everything you just said, ESPECIALLY the remarks on production. Their overall vibe does seem to have taken a back seat since Ethan Johns stopped working with them...

What do you mean slower and deeper? Good or not good? Im kinda torn, it suits the new music i guess but leaves me thinking wtf has happened to his voice. In his defence he sounds more like himself on the live versions, maybe the album vocals have just been processed too much. Just putting some thoughts out there

I agree with Dani in relation to Caleb's voice. I do love the raspy sound so much. With this voice Caleb blows me away everytime. In MB the hoarse voice is almost gone. But nethertheless i really like MB. You can literally hear the fun they had, recording this album.
My fav songs are Supersoaker, Rock City, Temple, Don't Matter, Family Tree, Coming Back Again, Work on Me and i also love Beautiful War.

I am not sure how I feel about MB. I like it, but I don't love it. I think that the 1st part of the album is pretty good, and energetic, and then the ballads are okay as well. But then the second part of the album kind of died on me and it began to blend together. Through 'Family Tree', it was interesting and varied, but after that, I couldn't tell one song from another. Also, I don't LOVE any one song on this album. Even when CAS came out, I listened to No Money and Pickup Truck like 100 times. But on here, I am not yearning to go back to most of the songs and listen to them again and again. I think i enjoyed individual songs, when they started coming out before the album more than I like the album as a whole. Standouts for me are "Family Tree", "Rock City", "Wait for Me", "Don't matter" and "Beautiful War". Another sad bit--the loss of Caleb's voice. It's just not the same.

First 7 songs are great, i tend to switch off a bit after family tree but that should change over time!

Another sad bit--the loss of Caleb's voice. It's just not the same. I mentioned something similar on the previous page. My brain picked up on the change instantly. Im not saying its bad, cause its not, but its definitely different to how his voice sounds on all previous albums. Hard to explain, but the unique and instantly recognizable voice he had has made a change on this new record.

Not entirely sure where to put this, but the Chicago setlist is actually the worst setlist they've ever done.

I know this might not be something Caleb has control over but his voice is pretty much nothing like it used to be. His voice was so unique in the beginning, even before the raspness. It jsut had such groove and appeal. Just listening to king of the rodeo as I type this and its just mind blowing stuff!
I find it funny that they think the songs on MB are screamy and he is nervous about singing them live. Better not try charmer any time soon then eh!

Charmer only has those couple of screams, SuperSoaker is screamy throughout. But Caleb's voice has most definitely changed; he's said in interviews that he finally has the confidence to sing clearly instead of hiding what he's singing.
Sarah, I agree. It's so strange to not see one BOTT song on the list, or Molly's. I know OBTN is still their biggest (selling) album, but 7 songs off that AND as good as ignoring the fans' favourite albums, that's just odd. No matter how cool the new songs are, they don't make up for the lack of YAYM & BOTT songs. Better selection of ALL the albums at ACL please, boys!

I finally got Mechanical Bull this past Friday and so far my faves are 'Rock City', 'Don't Matter', 'Wait for Me' and 'Comeback Story'. I need to spend more time with it for some of the other songs to grow on me, but I am liking this album way better than Come Around Sundown.

Was the album a flop then? the lack of talk and hype surrounding it suggests so.

Not at all; I saw a pic of them in Australia with gold or platinum discs for the album, which is hardly a flop. I find the promotion cycle so far kinda old-fashioned, by going on several tv shows to showcase songs before doing the big gigs. The tv shows bring attention to the album, and people who aren't totally familiar with the band can still think 'hey this band is good, I wanna see them play' and go online to get tickets, because they haven't actually already missed it. I think it's kinda bold to do it that way, because it's different from what most bands would do, and I think it fits well with their desire of becoming/being a 'boxset band.' Also, just because people don't talk about it here (because there's not a lot of traffic on the forum), doesn't mean the album isn't discussed at all.

Everybody is on twitter and tumblr these days, that's where they will give their verdict on Mechanical Bull but it's hardly a flop. Number 1 in 4 countries and top of top 10 in many others. They also got quite good reviews in many mags. Even Nathan said they were happy that the album is doing really well, he wouldn't have said that if it wasn't the case.
