Anyone else think that "Don't Matter" sounds terrible on the album? What in the world is going on with his vocals? Too much "over-production" for a simple rocker like that... anyone sort of feel the same or understand what i'm talking about?

"Temple" is awesome! I don't think they have ever really had a song like that before. I swear they can do it all...

First listen coming to an end....it's got a very wholesome sound to it, lot of production work. Big country vibe in most songs which I am loving. Harmonies in songs are beautiful. Beautiful war brought a tear to my eye. Seems like the whole album flows and every song connects, something which the past 3 albums haven't had in my opinion. Not sure of temple, that was a bit generic but im sure it will grow. It's a glorious day people, embrace it. Long live the kings.

Initial thoughts upon first listen:
1) Supersoaker - Great all around song, great guitar, even better rhythm section 2) Rock City - Don't know why, but my first thought when I heard this song was "Weezer", lol, then Caleb came in and saved the day... and i'm also a sucker for drug references in songs 3) Don't Matter - Killer song, terrible production on the album (imo)... may only listen to live versions 4) Beautiful War - Simply beautiful, emotional, and all kinds of other feelings... powerful meaning 5) Temple - Really outside of the box for KOL, and I LOVE IT... gives a certain "90's sitcom theme song" feel, KILLER hooks all over the place 6) Wait for Me - Another beautiful song... reminds me of "The Police"... the drums carry this song and really make it what it is 7) Family Tree - The "haha" at the beginning is dumb, but the rhythm section is ridiculously groovy and the breakdown couldn't be better... weird lyrics, but hey, that's Caleb sometimes 8) Comeback Story - Is this an electric cover of Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talking"? lol j/k... seriously, another awesome tune and homage to the man, the legend, Grandfather Leon... music has a "Wilco" vibe at times 9) Tonight - Hell yes! Delay and beautiful guitar tones!!! AWESOME first verse, had me hooked right after... sounds a lot like "The Immortals" at times (the chorus) but I don't mean that in a negative way (btw, this song exhibits everything I admire about Matt as a guitar player) 10) Coming Back Again - is this even KOL?!? damn what a song! Quite possibly the most "indie" song they have ever made, and it worked like a charm... instant all-time favorite... the backup vocals during the chorus are perfect! (side note: Nathan is way too good at drums) 11) On the Chin - Don't really care for it... too country and sounds too much like that Ford commercial that annoys me every time I turn on the television... oh well 12) Work on Me - Crazy weird guitar work (in a good way), gonna take a while for some of these lyrics to soak in, but the music is really chill and comforting... I do really like the "Phil Selway-ish" drums during the verses... not bad for a bonus track I suppose... 13) Last Mile Home - just plain, no opinion really, lol... good slow close to an album I guess
Rating: 7/10 - WAY more interesting and diverse than CAS, but with that being said, the album doesn't feel like a whole (yet), whereas CAS had this "complete" quality to it... same with OBTN... but anyway, this isn't a comparison. All in all, this is a great album filled with great tones and catchy beats. It's really encouraging to hear some songs like "Temple", "Tonight", and "Coming Back Again", and then hear that they can still rock the house down with "Supersoaker" and "Don't Matter". I'm not sure how a lot of songs will sound live, but I will definitely be at the show to find out. It also scares me how good Nathan and Jared can lock in now. KOL are a musical force to be reckoned with.

Hey Clarabella! Good to see you here! ) Nope, I'm still holding out. I did listen to the Don't Matter snippet and cos I knew Matt's scream is at the start, I also listened to the first 5 seconds of the stream. And Coming Back Again was on the radio, but the replacement cleaning lady was yapping through it, so I haven't really heard that.

Coming Back Again was on the radio already? It is really good one. By the end of the day yesterday my favorite was Comeback Story. LOVE that song.

Oh Erin, I haven't heard anything from you about Nacho's video yesterday. Matt is hilarious in it.

^ yea it's album of the week on a national station. Apparently there was an album launch BBQ on Sunday, which looked like it was fun (in the woods, looking like it was at the family reunion, playing horseshoe and there was a mechanical bull in a tent, as well as of course a BBQ) but also cold! I know I stayed inside on Sunday cos of the weather! I posted gifs of Nacho's vid in the Matt pics thread. I love how he gets his sexy act on. Anyone else think that "Don't Matter" sounds terrible on the album? What in the world is going on with his vocals? Too much "over-production" for a simple rocker like that... anyone sort of feel the same or understand what i'm talking about? I can't really judge cos I only heard the 30 second snippet, but I think I agree with you about the over-production. Though for me that was more toward the music, which all seemed a bit muddled together, whereas live the music sounded clearer and far more energetic. Apparently it was the last song to be written, "cos they needed another rocker" and it came together in a really short time (iirc, in 15 mins?), so it's a shame to sorta kill that spontaneous vibe with too much production.

I think they might have decided to have fun on don't matter as you can tell from the starting scream, i think they just said: let's fuck around on this one

^ I can't speak for Slownight, but that's exactly what I think of Don't Matter too. Just a fun song, originally a bit of a filler maybe, that turned out really cool. But from what I heard in that snippet, the spontaneous vibe has been smothered by too much production.

We've been listening to the live versions for a while, it was the first song they played and we got used to it, maybe that has something to do with it haha

Don't Matter sounds very repetitive to me, even more so every time I listen to it. But still it's a rocker and I am always a sucker for those songs although I agree on the over production critique. And Family Tree seems to fall a bit flat too on record, it seems to loose a bit of its 'oompf' I think it's a much better song played live but I may be biased as that's how I have heard it first. Come Back Story really is an awesome song. But overall this is a really good album, I give it an 8/10.

Questionmymoves, I agree it has something to do with that, but even if we'd heard it recorded first and then live, there'd still be that feeling of why it's more energetic live than recorded. And I would call that over-production.
