I never thought about that with Cold Desert either but that would make sense that maybe his ramblings got to crazy to decipher or he said some things he didn't want to share. And I never heard or read anything about it not being edited just that it was the first and only take. So there very well could have been more to the song that didn't make the album. If there is that would be an awesome thing to hear or maybe if they were filming that session to see.

^^ Of course! But not to the point of making up a whole song on the spot!!
It does speed up at the end right? Do you think that was a production-y thing, or was Nathan (I just assume he's 'the boss' of timing) just like "OK lets speed up" and everyone else picked up on it?
I still find the whole Cold Desert drunkenness story quite incredible. Some of the musical parts must have been written beforehand, yea?? Like, I know they're extraordinarily talented, but to the best of my knowledge they're not magical?!

To me it sounds more like "here's to you, here's to me, woah to us..." I dunno lol. But if I ever met any of the guys I think I would be tempted to ask about why Cold Desert fades out then in again. They probably wouldnt tell me lol. That was originally where the song ended.. but caleb kept singing so they turned it back up and kept going.. i forget where i read it ..but thats what happend!!

na i dont think one thing was added to this, especially on drums...
and it does speed up definately, especially after it returns...
does caleb say in between verse 2 and 3 'don't speed up' i always thought that's what he was saying but maybe not!

HA! That makes an odd kind of sense...but I've always thought it was "don't give up"....but with him, who the hell ever knows?

i thought the version on the album was the unedited version... Same here. I always thought they were fading it out and no one knew Caleb was gona continue singing. It fades out over a long period, but the fade in is a lot quicker

i didnt think it was just the end that he starting coming up with lyrics.
i swear i saw an interview with him that said he only had one verse written and just made the rest up.
they all had a chat about a song to end the album with and everyone suggested cold dessert but he couldnt remember recording it.
when he heard it back things like "jesus dont love me, no ones ever carried my load" was all made up on the spot.
of course.... i may have dreamed it!!!

^ Yep, that's definitely the story we've been told - home movies day 22... I'm quite glad YouTube doesn't have a 'how many times has Jessica watched that clip' function because I spend an embarrassingly large portion of my life there....
Is it a bad thing to possibly only like the song so much because of how it's created? I'm not denying that it is one of the most emotionally provoking songs they've ever done (for me on a par with Day Old Blues and Wicker Chair), but do you think it would have the same power if we didn't know the circumstances around its ... conception ... if you will? I'll never know - I saw the vid before hearing the song...

i told my brothers that story and they loved it, i definately think knowing the background makes you appreciate the song better.
not just any song though, i mean i love the bucket, but if i found out it was because he went to b and q and saw a lovely bucket on the sheleves wouldnt make me like it any more.
but the story behind cold dessert is brilliant and i think of it eveytime i hear it.

That’s the kind of inspiration I’d get for writing a song, I’m not very creative like these guys I love the spontaneity of Cold Desert so I don’t think any other take/version etc will be out.

Always ALWAYS crank up the volume in wee steps as it fades then back down again so it stays the same throughout. The number of near crashes I've had doing that while driving...still, SO worth it. I do that too. Sometimes I leave it to get really loud, y'know, when I'm feeling dangerous Seems to me that if this had grown out of their sound check writing sessions it could have been very well realised musically before they went into the studio. It would only then have needed minimal work for them to have played what we hear on the recording in one go or a very few takes spliced together to accomodate Caleb's lyrics. (they haven't said they didn't work a lot on the music beforehand, just that the lyrics were a one off Caleb brain splurge) I think the fade may be to cover some editing of lyrics, or it's a 'mistake'.
