Pfff, I just got back and I don't know what to think anymore.
I allready know this is gonna be a big rambling post, so bear with me. When I first heard the kings were going to play in Rotterdam I thought, well, I'm not gonna go there. I really don't like Rotterdam, I really on public transport and it takes like 3 trains to get there. And I don't like the venue. And I had a feeling it would be full of annoying sex on fire fans. But then I read more reviews from other gigs and it kind of infected me + I could get some pretty good seating tickets so I decided to go anyway.
So, today, I took my 3 trains to rotterdam. One of which I had to spend standing pressed against other people for 45 minutes, in a heatwave, with no aircon. Plus I opened a bottle of coke which ofcourse sprayed all over me and the people next to me. Needless to say, by the time I got to the venue I wasn't in the best of moods.
I found my seat and I got my self cheered up again, because I was gonna see Kings of Leon right? I'm not gonna let some trains dampen my spirit!
So Glasvegas came on. I saw them before and I didn't like them then and I still don't like them now. Sorry if there are any fans out here, but I think they're pretty much the most boring band I ever saw. And this singer is such a poser! I believe the crowd wasn't that thrilled about him but he kept on thanking the crowd and doing silly things like lying on the floor and it just kept on going on and on and on and they would just not leave.
Kings of Leon came on. On my side (Matt's) I was literally the only one standing up, or at least as far as I could see. Not like, most of the people were sitting down. No, everyone was sitting down, except me. And people kept on tapping my shoulder asking me to sit down. Which I didn't. I must admit I almost did, because it feels really awkard to be the only one standing in a crowd of hundreds. The peer pressure was pretty big. But I resisted it and kept on standing and dancing. If there were more people standing up I would have probably been more shouty and dancy. It's hard when you just hear people talking about you and giving you angry looks. The crowd in the standing area was really into it though.
I couldn't really see Caleb's facial expressions very well, but he seemed a bit annoyed with the crowd. But if he looked at my side, I would have been annoyed to. Before Fans he said something like "everyone needs to fucking stand up" so about half of the people did, but after the song everybody sat down again. And ofcourse during Sex on Fire everybody stood up. So I was like "Ok, so now we can stand all of a sudden??" Seriously, if you know only one song, just stay home next time.
But other than that, the guys didn't seem extra grumpy or something. Nathan looked chilled, like he always does. Matt was really getting into it, and Jared seemed to be enjoying himself too.
About the no encore thing. It was just the weirdest thing. They ended with Use Somebody, which in my opinion isn't a very ending type of song. So they walked up and everybody was cheering and expecting an encore. And loads of people kept on cheering too, even when the lights and music came on again and they were packing everything. Only when they were packing the drums I was like, ok, maybe they really aren't coming back. It was just reallly weird, because nobody new what was going on. And if they didn't play an encore, but ended with black thumbnail, or slow night so long or something, that would have been better, because it feels more like a final song.
On the train home I saw a girl with a setlist and there was an encore on that. So they were planning on playing one. My guess is they had to catch a plane home, because Caleb said something about flying in today, and flying back out tonight. and because glasvegas kept playing so long, they didn't have time to finish it
So yeah, I am a bit dissappointed.
Full setlist in order:
Notion Be Somebody Taper Jean Girl My Party Molly's Chamber Red Morning Light Fans California Waiting Closer Crawl Four Kicks Charmer Sex on Fire The Bucket On Call Cold Desert Use Somebody

I need to say something about dutchies & the kings.
So, obviously, before sex on fire they were never played on the radio or tv. But amonst my friends pretty much everyone who was into more alternative music knew and liked Kings of Leon. So even though they didn't have a top 10 hit and didn't get any airtime, there were definitely loads of people interested in their music. Like, when I talked to people on other music forums, or on festivals or something, loads of them knew Kings of Leon. So I'm pretty sure that if they would have played a gig in one of the smaller venues before sex on fire, they would have found a pretty awesome crowd. But for some reason they (or there management) didn't even play ONE show here. Well, they played one in 2004, and then a festival in 2007 and opening for pearl jam. But inbetween 2004 and february this year not ONE single show. Now they play huge venues, which turns of a lot of people. Like I almost didn't go. I go to quite a lot of concerts, but they are all in smaller venues. The crowd is just so much different.
Ok, rambling again. What I'm saying is: They have a right to be a bit dissapointed in the dutch crowds, because tonight I was dissappointed too. And yes, it is annoying if the crowd only knows one song. But on the other hand, they didn't gave us any change before Sex on Fire, because they never played here. Even though I'm sure they could have got a good response.
Conclusion: We should build a time machine, make the kings play a gig in 2005/2006, they know the dutchies loved them too, and all would be well.

I hate that in my feelings all this overshadows that they actually played a great show! California Waiting was one of the songs I was really hoping for and they played it so, that made me really happy! And I really enjoyed myself during the show, singing and dancing along to everything! It really wasn't all that bad

Karma for standing when no one else was. I would do the exact same thing. I don't blame them at all for foregoing the encore if the crowd was that shitty. Such a shame that people take tickets true fans could've had instead. I'm just wondering, how could people not be excited when Caleb was wearing that little of clothing? Baffling! By the way, I do not at all think they left early just because of "one person" aka the person who threw the beer bottle. Considering all of the times this has happened, there was clearly more to it. I'm assuming it was a combination of the beer bottle throwing and an unenthusiastic crowd. I mean, we have no idea how it looked from their perspective, regardless if there were a couple areas of people who were into it. It was once again confirmed to me that they only really give a shit about their UK and US crowds, and I guess the occasional Australian gig is good too. WHAT! No no no...take it from an American, the Kings don't favor their US fans at all. I don't want to take a dig at them but trust me, if any thing the US fans get the least positive response from them.

sucky crowds put a bad taste in my mouth and i'm sorry that you (and the kings) had to deal with it. but i'm happy to hear that they still played awesome, which is the KOL way. i wouldn't be surprised if they didn't play the enore because of the fans, i'm sure they're are darn tired of the sex somebody fans/crappy crowds by now, and they've been pretty calm and reserved about it. karma for putting up with the crowds and all the train-riding to get there.

If someone threw beer at me when I was at work, I'd be pretty pissed too. Must be hard to reconcile in your head - "they paid their money to come see me, and they're throwing shit when I'm doing what they paid me to do". haha, this made me laugh, because it's SO true. i don't come to your work and throw beer at you! and i bet it does a number on Caleb for the people to 'love' him but throw shit at him. i bet a beer bottle from a crowd doesn't have much speed behind it, but i bet it still hurts. that being said, they better not aim for that sholder, or i'll hunt 'em down!

Guys, I'm getting the feeling that this whole now encore thing is being taken the wrong way.
I'm pretty sure they didn't do an encore because the didn't have time. I'm thinking they went of stage thinking they would do an encore, but somebody told them they didn't have anymore time.
Because 1. Caleb mentioned flying back tonight 2. If they didn't want to play an encore I don't think they would have finished with use somebody. 3. Svenja said she some them leaving pretty quick after the show, so they must have been in a hurry. 4. The crew looked like they thought there was gonna be an encore though. It took a while before they actually switched the lights on.
I BLAME GLASVEGAS BECAUSE THEY PLAYED SO FUCKING LONG!

That's ridiculous
It's just very unprofessional to run of stage because 'you don't like the crowd' which is a lame excuse, what I've learned from dutch audiences is that a lot of people enjoy themselves from the inside out.
Suddenly Caleb was talking about party pooping and he seemed to get crankier by the minute then would say how great the fans are. Very strange atmosphere, on 3.fm radio they said the band got annoyed by the sound, heat and crowd. Who's the pooper now..
Nothing about a beer bottle, which they don't even have there. It probably was a plastic cup, everyone was throwing beer since it was like a huge steamroom. I must say it was a horrible heat, some people got hurried away because they simply dried up. Ahoy is a shitty venue for it's heat/sound that's for sure but the crowd was just fine!
I find it just unprofessional to leave like that, if you feel the crowd isn't into it(how can you tell?) you even try to impress them more I'd think. People were cheering and clapping all the way even when the lights came on...'You gotta be kidding me' the words I heard A LOT on the way out. I wanted to buy a shirt but after this...no way ha!
Their set was so good, eventhough Ahoy doesn't have great sound, I was really looking forward to Black Thumbnail, Knocked up and the new Devil song. Quite bummed!

I will say one more time that the crowd was NOT shitty.
Yes many people were sitting down, but even them were cheering very loudly and giving them nothing but love.
There was also a huge standing area with people jumping up and down eventhough it was WAY too hot.
So the crowd thing can't really be an excuse. The guy behind me saw them over 10 times and said for KOL shows this was a good crowd so nope, not really buying that one.
Also right after Use Somebody everybody was on their feet and the clapping and cheering was very loud.... until they stayed away it is only then that some people started booing.
So it's the day after and I am still pretty bummed but I'll get over it... it was a good show I just would have liked to know why they bailed on us.

Yeah, the crowd really wasn't that shitty in my opinion too. Ok, so maybe in my area they were, but especially the standing crowd was really in to it!
And with all this I almost forgot that I also made two (crappy) videos!

Well in the Kings defence....an encore is supposed to be an added extra when the audience genuinely want more, yes they do it at every show but maybe they just thought the crowd didnt want it this time!!
Also, perhaps the Kings should just cut SOF from the setlist and be done with it!!

From Nate's twitter -
"Sorry for the short set last night rotterdam. An asshole hit caleb in the face with a beer as we were leaving. If you know him kick his ass."
Can't say I blame Caleb to be fair, shame one dickhead ruins it for everyone though!

Also, perhaps the Kings should just cut SOF from the setlist and be done with it!! The audience cheered for a good 15 minutes afterwards, they wanted an encore allright. Even when the lights and music went on and they were taking away the instruments, there was still loads of people cheering.

Actually reading someones blog on the mainpage at the end of use somebody someone threw beer bottle... quote: So we went home, and sitting in the car listening to radio 3 FM dj Eric Corton and he said something about someone throwing a beer bottle at KOL so they stopped playing maybe that was just the final reason for caleb to be angry and finally leave the stage. i read pretty much all of the last posts in this thread and it seems like he's been getting angry in the beginning and maybe this time there weren't 'enoguh people for him singing along the older songs' since he always says he prefers country music so i guess he's more into their own older songs like RML or Cali. i honestly felt weird when everybody in berlin was cheering after they finished SOF for like 2 minutes...cause i honestly skip this song when i listen to OBTN cause it annoys me. and it makes me sick to see those weird SOF fans go wild only during the new songs and when caleb says "thanks everyone for supporting us" they cheer as hell, but they didn't even knew them before OBTN and feel like hardcore whatever fans. makes me angry, though i know it's childish somehow. i guess thats the bad side that comes along with gaining a bigger audience since OBTN. caleb doesn't seem to like much of the newer fans, saying they're not his kind of people. and i totally understand what he's talking about. i love this band to death and i also have my fave songs on OBTN, but sometimes i really wish nathan, jared and matt would've listened to caleb and kicked SOF off the record when they were discussing this.... argh, now i feel bad for saying this
