Aw those are AWESOME. I wish someone had done that for the Louisville show! Get me a photo from the Louisville gig, and the setlist and I can make something similar. Even put a setlist on any old photo you like of the Kings. Okay thanks so much! I'll post them in the Louisville thread

Caleb was nice enough to sign his pick from the Chicago show that I got, and I let him know that I would be going to see him in Denmark, he seemed surprised by that. My gf got a good pic with him also, although I didn't attend this show, we just drove in to try and meet them since we don't think we will be able to in Denmark with all the rabid fans over there. img405.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pic1ex0.jpgimg134.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pic2gf7.jpg

Hmmm, does Caleb always use those picks?
I'm trying to figure out if I have his or Jareds....

Cheers, Bryan That's awesome that is actually was you, I had a feeling. But I didn't get your message . Maybe technology just hates me. And I need to keep myself updated with all your wall papers ect... they're awesome. I've attempted at something similiar. I failed....

Right then... I'll do a proper review finally. I've been listening to my KOL with the volume dangerously high while driving about the city for the last week or so.... It's a pretty good way to relive the show. Most cheap car stereos will distort a little on the high end when you have the volume cranked up. It's especially good for the Only By The Night songs.... gives you a feeling of being at the gig for sure.
The equipment work between the Whigs set and the Kings opener took quite a long time imo, but it was tolerable. Nacho seemed to be the man in charge of a lot of things indeed. I pointed out to my boy the drum tech, the rigging guys, gaffers with their tape securing cables, and taping off a walkway for the boys to use when the entered the stage, etc.
The house lights went down, then off, and the Kings walked calmly onto the stage. No running, no strutting, waving, extra lights, etc. Simply walk out there. I liked that. Upon first glance, the crowd went pretty nuts, it was louder than I expected. I felt a sense of belonging for certain. "ALL these people love this band as much as me!!" It was a great feeling, completely contradictory to the looks and comments I was getting when telling colleagues and employees of mine about the gig as it drew close. "Never heard of them," was a frequent response.
Closer was a curious choice for an opener in my eyes, but the crowd responded to the first few notes with immediate recognition. Good singalong on the chorus. I was still a bit wide-eyed at this point.
Crawl was excellent, more pleasing than Closer to me. "'Fore I walk away... 'fore I walk away!!!!" Good work from Matt on this one, and Nathan makes his first big appearance.
Taper Jean Girl was awesome, and the reaction from the crowd appeased my one fear.... this crowd was NOT an Only By The Night crowd, not at all. The crowd gobbled TJG up. Nathan was memorble again. Not just noise coming from the drumkit... it was truly an "instrument" adding to the overall texture of the song.
My Party. Nathan sings the "ooooooooooo-OOOO!" at the beginning of the chorus! Who knew! Those are some pretty high notes and he gets there with ease. I'm not a big fan of the vocal effect used on Caleb's mic on this one, but musically, the song rocked, boogied, and stomped all over the place all at the same time. An early highlight, albeit an unexpected one.
Mollys' Chambers - holy shit. The ran through this old one one the edge of being out of control. I knew they weren't but that was the vibe I was getting. Those singing and dancing stepped it up a notch with more energy. Those tapping along and bobbing their heads surely hurt their necks, such was the force of the rhythm laid down by Nathan and Jared. Back to Back with SNSL was stellar. This crowd knew ALL the material, and the Kings were happy to give it to them!
Slow Night So Long. My boy's favorite. On his own guitar he can play more of this song than any other KOL song. (he's since learned the solo from Use Somebody and some others, but this will always be his first KOL song) I knew they had been ending some encores with SNSL, so I was a bit surprised to hear it this early. Great song, a classic and they attacked it. Jared's bass came through loud and clear for the first time in the show that I can remember and he played it up a bit. The bits in the middle of the song (the middle 8 I suppose) after "I just don't know, where they can be found".... was where the band shone brightest in the first half hour of the show for me. Great song, even better live. The loudest cheer of the night so far. Fans - I knew what was coming when the tech brought Caleb the acoustic guitar, but the crowd seemed to wait until the song started to catch on. I found that wierd.
Revelry - Slightly dissapointing. I don't love the song, but the slide guitar on the album version saves it for me. The slide was hard to hear. Nice vocals though.
Milk - Good singalong with the crowd. Memorable
Four Kicks - One of the top 3 hightlights of the night for me. I collect mp3's of KOL gigs and have 15 or so, so I knew it was Four Kicks from the moment Nathan began that little drum intro with the high hat while the boys get ready. As agressive as this song is on the album, they blew me away with it. Matt improvised a bit on a few lines, which was nice. They seemed to really be enjoying themselves on this one. Effing fantastic live, beyond what I could have even wanted for this, one of my top 5 KOL songs.
Wasted Time - Great to hear! Nathan and Matt in full force on this one. Loved it. It should stay in the set-list. I would have been happy with Happy Alone here as well.
Sex On Fire - A big shout from the crowd as this one began. Clearly Indianapolis' young and beautiful suburban and or high society downtown white kids know this song from the radio. Nice, but not particularly memorable for me.
The Bucket - See Taper Jean Girl. The ASH songs were all memorable for me.
Be Somebody - A surprise for me. Well played, they are hitting on all four cylinders now. Any rust from the long break from playing live gigs not shaken off the previous night in Lousiville (Indy was gig #2) is clearly gone.
On Call - The young ladies clearly love this one. A huge high piched cheer blasted us all as Jared's opening keyboards began. He plays a little bitty keyboard it seems, but the song was great. Good singalong by the crowd as well, "to BEEEE there!!!!!" Caleb let us sing the last one on our own, and we oblidged.
Use Somebody - Wonderful. If there is an OBTN song that surpassed the studio version in the manner than Four Kicks did, then this is it. Bright Orange Lights backlit the Kings, and Matt got a nice little spotlight on him during his solo. Impressive enough for my son to go find the tabs and learn the solo, so it must have been good! My favorite OBTN song, and even better live... far better if that's possible.
Cold Desert - Nice change of tempo, mood, emotion. Extremely well sung by Caleb. Well placed in the setlist.
Notion - Like it a lot, but not much really stands out for me as I recall the show.
Trani - Surprised the hell out of me, as they have not been playing it every show. Nathan counted off the beginning of the song with that really slow 1-2-3-4 by crashing his drumsticks together at such a tempo that ONLY Trani has. Instantly recognizeable to anyone who listens to their live gigs, and I was THRILLED they played it. As it builds and builds to the two crescendos at the end I was amazed at how they STILL play this song with such passion and energy. Outstanding.
And they walked off the stage as unassuming as they came on, maybe added a wave or two.
The wait for the encore was long.... 2-3 minutes, maybe more?
Back on they come, nathan has a beer, stands behind his kit, salutes the crowd and takes a big drink of it.
Knocked Up was a special performance. Not many bands would make a 6+ minute song the first in an encore, but KOL is no ordinary band of course. Caleb insisted he got us all singing along to the "Oh-Oh-Oh-Oh Oh-Uh-Oh!!!!!" in the middle, and walked to the front of the stage enticing us to give him more. The band held on to the groove for a few extra bars while we gave them what Caleb wanted. He nodded approvingly, smiled, let us go on for a bit, then walked back to the microphone to continue. Memorable.
Manhattan - Kind of like Notion for me. I like the song a lot in the context of OBTH, but the others around it outshine it for me.
Charmer - How Caleb can do that to his voice and do it night after night amazed me. I think I missed some of the performance just thinking about it. Just like the album version. No tricks or gadgets needed!!!
Black Thumbnail - Absolutely Crushed it. A stunning, sonic tornado blasting through downtown Indianapolis, ending a near perfect night. I can still hear it....
"Don't leave no smell on me-eeee!!" then "BOOOOOOOM" The lights were nearly all back on, which was nice as well.
Cheers, Bryan
