wow- some pretty intense stuff over on the kingsofleon.com board.
i like what one person said,
"but this is what happens when you actively court a more mainstream audience: you get a lot of johnny come latelys at your show who don't know you beyond your current hit single. and you also either alienate the core fans or push them to the margins to make room for the pop kids. no one sang MILK but all they sang every last word of SEX ON FIRE - not a coincidence"
I can't believe Caleb was making throat-slashing gestures at the crowd- intense!

oh wow. more intense than i thought? keith from WAS said huston wasn't that bad when i asked?
the stills commented on it though, and caleb said 'huston was so much different.." after a ton of boos he went on to say 'oh, you that isn't even all of it...' or something like that. i couldn't hear what he said after.
i do know that, and i admit to being super surprised by this, in dallas every single song was sung lyric for lyric by the crowd. some 16 year old girls next to me only knew sex on fire, but i genuinely think they were into the show regardless.
idk. it's a double edged sword. you can't have it all, unfortunately. i mean i met a girl there who went on about being obsessed with KOL, and she genuinely had love for them, but she knew not a lick of a word outside of crawl and sex on fire. we can't judge the fans for not knowing all of their material, as long as the love is there. so i get what the post on their official site was coming from.
that being said, mainstream or not, when you go to a rock show you rock the fuck out, you know?
i don't give two squirts of piss if you know the words or not...i mean i didn't know a single lyrics by the stills and the mic was IMMENSELY off but i still made as much noise as possible.
as musicians, they feed off of the crowd. i don't think that's a sign of immaturity on caleb's part at all. in fact, i thin that's a sign of dedication. they do put there all into it...i don't think it's too much to expect to have some sort of feedback from a crowd you work your ass off for.
ok. i'm done, aha.
or no wait. one more thing. about them having to expect that by going mainstream, the noncholant thing...i disagree completely. i don't think KOL's intention was to ever go 'mainstream'
i think more than anything, they wanted their music heard and appreciated by as many american fans as possible. i highly doubt they give a shit about selling records for money or fame. now when you sell out a venue you expect that the fans are there because they appreciate your music.
the dallas show was on a fucking WEDNESDAY. the crowd still rocked out though. i had class the next morning at 9, as did so many other people i met that drove a good 3 hours down to see em.
i'm not saying all fans should do that. i'm just saying, a rock show isn't a 'stand back and sway lie you're too cool to move' gig. if the band can stand up there and make such ridiculous faces and dance like caleb tends to, the least they could do was fucking make some noise, you know?
ok. NOW i'm done.

^^I think the Dallas crowd boo-ed the mention of Houston, not the Kings! Double, I totally agree with your post. I'm not into the stupid fan snobbiness about "new" fans who don't know all the words - as long as they're loving the music, it's all good. If a fraction of them go away and buy more KOL music and get into it, then even better! And I love that the Kings feed off the crowd, but what I don't love is that when Caleb doesn't get what he wants from the crowd he tends to sulk and withdraw rather than trying harder to engage. Instead of thinking, "This crowd is fucking shit, I'm gonna rock like a bastard, blow their minds and show 'em!" he seems to think, "This crowd is shit. Fuck 'em".

I would be curious to find out if KOL "rocks out" when they go see other bands. I saw video of Nathan and Lily at a Muse show and they just stood there on the side of the stage. Has anyone ever seen them jumping around and singing to other bands? If not, then they shouldn't get so upset.
Hell, they don't even get excited and jump around to their own music on stage!

here's the thing with caleb though, he's immensely insecure. i mean i think that is blatantly obvious. that one quote from spin will always stick out for me; 'if all these bands knew how much i agreed that we didn't deserve this, they'd be shocked' [obviously i paraphrased]
you can't compare that to when he goes to shows because of various reasons.
a - he's most likely friends with most bands he sees, so it isn't like it's this rare occurrence for him which requires this immense adrenalin rush full of energy.
b - he's on stage a lot. i think when you're talking about his fans, you shouldn't compare it to him seeing shows. it's more appropriate to compare it to his vibe on stage, and his vibe gets going.
c - i'm going to reiterate my point that he is self-conscious. i'm positive they're aware of the bullshit they get for going mainstream, so i can't imagine they like feeling like they're being observed by a group of people who seem so careless, it's almost like feeling dissected.
d - keep in mind that as of now, i'm speaking of caleb. i mean, nathan has always been the member i enjoyed listening to in terms of personality off stage, i don't want to call him my 'favorite', but you know. i think it's safe to say that caleb takes the shows the most seriously. do any of you guys remember that one clip where he gave jared the glare of death for a false start?
i take things like that to heart more than i can say. they get called assholes so fucking much, like all of the time. when push comes to shove though, they never give anything less. when you give out that much energy, any amount you take in is going to be magnified 10fold. just like when they get an amazing crowd it's more than evident in their mannerisms, the same can be said and expected for a shitty crowd.
why am i writing a novel? haha. sorry. if anyone actually read all of that, kudos!

double- great great analysis!
I agree with everyone basicaly...
Yes Caleb is insecure, yes the crowd probably sucked that night, should he have tried to get them more involved ? Probably but that's not his style and I definitely think he's a stubborn guy, set in his ways.
I've been to KOL shows where I was the only one totally into it, dancing by myself while everyone around me stood still (ie All Points West) and then KOL shows where the energy was magnetic and amazing (San Diego's HOB show).
In both cases KOL rocked it but I definitely enjoyed the show more when I was with a like-minded, crazy-for-KOL crowd.
I've also been to shows where I don't know any of the band's lyrics (my first modest mouse show) and I was totally pumped out of respect for the band's amazing efforts.
I dunno....all I know for sure is that I hope KOL don't have another shitty show like the Houston one- for everyone's sake.

I don't want them to jump around like a bunch of monkeys....I just feel that sometimes they look bored on stage, and that makes me feel bad as a member of the audience.
But that was in the past....I'll be sure to report back after I see them in Detroit!!

Hey kids, I'm here to tell you the show in houston was not that bad. I was in the building that day and heard the sound check. the lads seemed to be pretty please with the sound and I was just happy to be there to experience them. As for Caleb being insecure, I can see how someone might interpret his stage presence for insecurity. Off stage, VERY confident!! I thought in the end there was very good energy from KOL. Maybe if your standing next to some little teenies you might not have had such a good experience. Caleb didn't make any slashing gestures and he didn't sit down during Knocked Up. I read on KOL.com board someone said "can you believe he said I don't care if you don't care" for the love of Nathan.... those are the lyrics!! He wasn't referring to the crowd. Regarding him throwing the picks to the backstage, he was just trying to more than likely hoped one hit Nacho If you've ever seen the Charmer video, he does the same thing the second time he throws his pick. Just be glad Rooster wasn't in town that night. Everyone went to the local pool hall after the show (KOL included) and played pool, drank and believe ME a fun time was had by all. As for the crowd in dallas booing the band, they were just booing houston. It's a known fact that (supposedly) houston hates dallas and dallas hates houston. That's how the story goes anyway...... hey Schnucams... that idiot that wrote that piece in the houston press is just a two-bit hack that doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. Part of the night he was out smoking and drinking, the other part, trying to impress the local music critic. How can you write something when you don't know what you're talking about in the first place. I'll be seeing KOL in nashville and I'm sure the hometown crowd will give up much love.
