I dunno about anybody else but when I heard this album first and thought about interviews talking about the album, it made me think "this is nothing like they said it would be/I expected".
Correct me if I'm wrong but they said:
a) it would rock harder - I started thinking something along the lines of Red Morning Light/Four Kicks/McFearless/Charmer/Black Thumbnail (particularly the BOTT mentioned tracks).
b) "They were ready to tackle their southern roots...again" - I started thinking along the lines of Joe's Head/King of the Rodeo.
Does anyone else feel disappointed that this is not the case like I do. I like every song on OBTN but feel there aren't enough stand out tracks that only KOL would do, such as Trani/Milk/Day Old Blues.
I'm already hopeful, anxious, and worried for the next album as I want to see them flip back to what they do best - which is the first 3 albums and not the radio friendly U2 wannabe record that OBTN is...
...Not that they can be blamed - after 3 albums trying to take another step up and create a number 1 album on a major scale.

i take your point that it may not rock as much as u tot it would, i tink it was jared who said that, but bearin in mind he said that a while ago, so the final cut of the album wasnt decided, beneath the surface rocks but it didnt make it to album i think crawl and sex on fire are pretty rockin. be somebody has an fast edge to it. and about the southern roots thing, maybe they meant in terms of what there singing about, ie its a lot closer to home because its more a personal album i think its really naive for u to say that ure worried about the next album, i mean give it time it was only released on monday? this album is not U2 wanabe, its the kings of leon doin wat they do best, makin great music!

Nah I say worried but not in a way that I'm thinking it wont be good, I just don't want this to be the end of the style they've had for the first 3 albums and now moving towards a more U2/Coldplay style.
I think it's just that (in my interpretation) its so much less sex, drugs, rock & roll rugged rock (Sex on Fire and 17 cover the sex lol). Its probably just their lifestyle which is less sex, drugs and rock & roll.
They are my favourite band and I liked the as they were (are?) so I don't want them to move extremely away from that early style... it has happened to other bands so I don't want it to happen extremely to KOL.

exactly, people call them sell outs for thier new direction, but they dont live the lifestyle they use to, so for them to rite music about hard drugs and groupies now wud be the real sell out.
people say theve lost thier rawness from the first two albums, but that because they where raw, they where a new band gettin to grip wit their sound
but now theve growin as musicians and are just writing music on wat there experiencing now.

^^ Jebus I just noticed where Calebs gun is in that pic, careful now, down with that sort of thing!! Anyhoo.......I dont know a shit load about music composition and whatnot, I know what I like and what I dont, but, when I played this album for the first time I noticed that it was very much not like AHS or BOTT but I also noticed the intricacies of the music, small, subtle things, singing into a guitar pick up for example, it wasnt so much about the crazy ass lyrics about shagging this person and the next, its more about the actual music!! Its like a whole rather than four parts put together.....its almost like all four are at their best individually and so at their best as a band!! I have just read back over that and am not sure if it makes sense or has anything to do with the original post....apologies if it doesnt

Okay, I've not taken the album out of my ipodded ears since getting my hands on it. First impression was a no, no. Second was it's okay but I'm wavering again and totally and utterly agree with you. With the exception of Crawl, the whole album lacks bite and that is such a disappointment. Maybe it should be renamed Only By the Shite! (Now folks, don't castigate me for that!).

Bite is a good word to describe it. It doesn't have that edge that makes me (IMO before anybody pulls me up on that) think that this band are better than everybody else like I felt when each of the last 3 did when they came out. 1st I thought "a good rough band with album full of tunes" 2nd I thought "They've continued as they started AND SOME... same as first but with a few songs with that x-faxtor" 3rd I thought "wow its a bit different but its quality, lots of songs that stand out". 4th I think "each song is decent but besides Closer really, it doesn't excite me like the others"

KOL are, without doubt my favourite band, and one not so good album is not going to change that but OBTN is slightly bland and is perhaps too 'polished' if you know what I mean.

My thoughts exactly - favourite band that haven't met their own high standards on this occasion IMO, decent - yes, amazing - not really.

People have to be allowed to move on with their journey, though. I don't think you would like it if people said to you, get back in your bedroom and keep doing exactly what you were doing three years ago, or whatever. You expect the world to allow you the right to grow and change. Why shouldn't they?
What they produced back then isn't going to evaporate, either.
I say this with complete respect to your opinion, of course.

A band can go into the studio with their own ideas and expectations for what they want but that doesn't mean it's going to happen the way they thought. Things change. Ideas shift.

I think I may just be a bit disappointed that I awaited this new album excitedly and I don't enjoy this one like I did the others. I'll go and see them live and myabe they'll grow on me a bit like some of the older songs did.
