dude i get what ure saying about CNN and MSNBC, cause ure right. But just like they are partisan and people have to take what they say with a grain of salt its the same thing with Fox News Channel. Cause what u said about CNN sweeping things under the rug about Obama, Fox does EXACTLY the same thing with McCain and Palin, and please dont tell me that its not true.
i just finished watching reason 7, which was really good and true. You do have to look at that, how he says one thing and then says another. But to me that's EVERY politician. however reason 6 REALLY pissed me off!! how dare they say "he clings to his Columbia/ Harvard education" so what if he does? i would be super proud if i had that kind of education and would cling to it too! and to say he has a million dollar home like if it were a bad thing, hes worked hard for that million dollar home, it wasn't handed it to him. And to use those things as negative when we should be proud of him make me SICK!

[I love Tina Fey...she's my hero! Not only does she make a great Tina Fey-lin/Palin but she was a head writer on SNL before 30 Rock, and she wrote Mean Girls. Le sigh. What a legend. I know, I love her! First female head writer on SNL - go Tina! Hmm, I'm not sure how far you could push those statistics because to be honest access to abortion is often dependent on access to information, which is dependent on education and money...But it's definitely an interesting point. I come from a country where (incredibly!) abortion is still illegal, so I guess if we ever reach the modern age I can get back to ya on that! You'd think . I'll believe it when I see it! New Zealand has always been at the forefront of women's rights - they were the first to give women the vote I really can't see her running again, and if she did, I can't see her winning. I just imagine that general opinion will view her as somehow tainted. Of course anything could happen in the next four years - she could turn it all around and reinvent herself in the public imagination, like Al Gore! Oh yeah, skin-lightening products are sold all over Africa and Asia (then again fake tan products and sunbeds are a billion dollar industry amongst whites - women always want what they can't have. But I get your point ). But no doubt Obama's election as leader of the most powerful nation in the world would be a huge inspiration for African communities. Ha ha! Dear god... Oh yeah, KOL - forgot about them . I guess we'd gone a bit off topic, but yeah it seems all four would be Obama supporters. I'm off to watch McFatless's videos now..

[quote author=rogue board=band thread=7446 post=342325 time=1225172588 I know, I love her! First female head writer on SNL - go Tina! Totally. I'm always inspired by strong females who achieve success through their minds instead of their bodies. I'm sick of the whole Paris-Hilton-empower-urself-by-flashing-your-vagina school of thought. I'm currently reading 'Female Chauvinist Pig' and it's really gotten me riled up! I want intellectual Feminism - as opposed to Pussycat Doll Feminism - to rise again and I want to burn bras...well a cheap one hehe. Maybe the new generation of Paris-feminists should start burning their underwear instead lol...ahh the boys will love that one! Maybe they can pole dance while they're burning them to show how "empowered" they are and then they'll grab the burnt out underwear and declare these immortal words to the world: "That's hot...no literally, that's hot!" lol But I digress... I wanna fight for justice and equality...I'm in a fightin' mood! It's either that or the fact that I've just listened to Four Kicks heheh. The good news is the Aussie govt. just announced paid maternity leave for workers. Huzzah! Are you serious?! Hmmm, so what happens in the instance of a person being impreganted through rape or any other unsolicited forms of gestation? Oh my God! It reminds me of that film...what's it called...that Vera Drake one...are backyard abortions prevalent as a result? I suppose people can go overseas and do it perhaps. I know I'm stuck on this issue but it's interesting. There's another film called Crimen Del Padre Amaro (it has the spunky Gael Garcia Bernal in it...sigh whom I love), anyway there's a pretty nasty backstreet abortion scene in that too for all you big "Nasty Abortions Fans" lol. Yeah but Australia was second! Y'see we're very competitive nations hehe but dammit, they have the Flight of the Concordes (who are too cool to be true). I can see her running again. So many candidates have run more than once, hell Ralph Nader does it every four years (don't know how he just keeps on keeping on). This is McCain's second attempt - he eventually lost the ticket to George Bush who ran a dirty campaign against him. Ironically enough, the spin doctors who essentially annihilated his campaign in 2000 - through smears and slurs - are now working on his campaign this time around. Also, Obama alluded to Clinton running again and I think she's determined to be the first female President of the US, especially after witnessing the rise of someone like Palin, who to be honest, makes George Bush look like a Rhodes Scholar. I was overseas, I think in Damascus and there was an ad, I think it was originally an Indian ad, where a college girl was upset because all the boys didn't find her attractive and she felt like a loser. Lo' and behold a friend introduces her to a fairness cream product and she puts it on...remarkable, not only did she look more fairer but she somehow managed to obtain a new wardrobe/style, haircut/make-up etc. and every boy fell in love with her lol. At this point, I was rolling on the floor laughing at how insanely stupid the whole thing was. You have so much of the world's population trying to tan and darken themselves and then you have the other half trying to make themselves look lighter hehe. As for the Fox "News" thing...I don't watch Fox News. I like to keep my brain cells intact. I mean, Rupert Murdoch already owns most of the newspapers in Australia so I'm used to avoiding his propagandist shit. MSNBC is definitely biased but I would argue that CNN is not part of the "liberal" media landscape. They aim for objectivity and they do try to be balanced. Fox News on the other hand is just awe inspiring stupidity. It's not Fair and Balanced, it's all just Fear and Bullshit.

Ha ha "Pussycat Doll Feminism"...is that a new perfume? Yep, I live in Ireland where abortion is completely illegal (maybe that's why I see people like Palin & McCain as a real threat, not a hypothetical one - I can't take women's rights for granted and I know how easily they can be revoked). Of course that doesn't stop women having abortions - women will always have abortions - so they have to travel abroad to the UK and increasingly continental Europe. Ireland has only recently experienced major immigration, and in the last year there have been reports of occurences of 'backstreet' or self-inflicted abortions amongst immigrant women who don't have the money or visas to leave Ireland for abortions. And to make your blood boil further, the Irish government has denied women the right to leave the country if they suspect that they intend to have abortions, as recently as last year. The right of pregnant women to freely travel outside the country actually had to be put to referendum in 1993! (the referendum was provoked by the case of a 13 year old girl who was repeatedly raped by her friend's father and whose parents were prevented from taking her to England for an abortion when she became pregnant through rape. She was at school with me). So yeah, Vera Drake ain't too far off from modern Ireland! Yeah, I saw that movie (Gael fans unite! ). Not pretty. I'm sorry, but NZ edges it with Fllight Of The Conchords! Also I have to side with them cos Ireland have got that 'little neighbour to the big neighbour' complex too Yeah, she could - right now she seems to be a bit like damaged goods (not saying she is, just that that seems to be the perception). But that could be spun away in the next four years. And you're right - seeing Palin up there might galvanise her into action! I tend not to watch American news, it's too depressing. Everytime I watch it I'm so shocked that I run right back to the BBC and RTE.

Jay and Rogue- I feel as if you guys were in my mind and you just wrote down all my opinions regarding all these interesting, valuable topics.
You know what gets me most irked? The fact that there are so many non-Americans who actually know their sh*t (like you Jay) about American politics and you guys can't vote!! The ones voting are ignorant fools actually believing media lies such as the whole Iraq-war-linked-to-9-11- crap.
I love it! I love this totally honest, progressive talk!

lol NICE. I can't wait. But not in a defensive kind of 'can't wait', more of a "I'd like to hear the alternative" kind of 'can't wait'. ok sorry it took so long! But here is the video i wanted to show u! I chose this video not because it's a Republican endorsing Obama, but because i feel that not even Democrats have truly said it more perfectly than this man. When i saw it, it seriously brought me to tears. I hope u really pay attention to what he is saying with an open mind.

Ahh, I'm not even interested in English politics but I've been so interested in this election I just wanted to come on here and see if everyone was talking about it, and you are! Anyways, I've always been pro-Obama, and now I am even more! I understand why that brought you to tears csolis, and wish I was American just so I could vote. I just don't get AT ALL why people want McCain. People complain about Bush so much and it's evidant that McCain is very similar yet people will still vote for him? Maybe I don't know enough, infact I don't. But that just seems crazy to me. And the way he chose Palin as him little side-kick made me laugh! She's awful and I just don't like him one bit...The man in the video was so right, even if the both of them would be good presidents, Obama is the right president for what is happening now.

My impression is that McCain may well be better than this campaign has ended up showing him, but as someone who thinks for example that a reform of healthcare funding would be good for America, I am tending to side with Obama. However, whilst I find Obama attractive as a candidate, I know from experience (Tony Blair, anyone?) that what you see is not always what you get. In fact you can be in for some very nasty shocks. If I were a voter in this election I would be researching like crazy.
I would agree with Phoebe, Obama is more popular of the two here.
csolis - karma for the Colin Powell vid - had read discussion of it, but hadn't actually seen it. V. interesting and altered my view of him a little

It's just a blatant violation of human rights to disallow someone to travel - outside of said country's jurisdiction - to prevent the birth of a child borne out of rape. I honestly cannot think of anything worse...it just sounds like a horrible imposition of values that you would expect from a Totalitarian State. It's pretty disarming to see the right to individual freedoms being encroached upon by Government. I would be filthy if the Government tried to impose their values upon me outside of their jurisdiction. In Australia, there's no Federal legislation allowing abortion, it's more of a State-by-State basis (all States allow it, but each State has distinct differences in interpretation etc.). You can always find legal loopholes I guess? So glad you like (or even know!) Gael Garcia Bernal. He's just amazing and smart and gaaaaaah, I love him. Good taste you have there! I'm also partial to Daniel Bruhl Hehehe, so true. The bastards also had Lord of the Rings. Baz Luhrmann (Love!) is releasing a new film called ' Australia'. If this movie flops, then good God, we're doomed and destined to be New Zealand's little prison-bitch for the rest of eternity...hehehe, gotta appreciate the hyperboles! Hell yeah! I love BBC and thankfully in Australia we have other good news broadcasters to turn to - albeit they're in the minority. I only watch Fox News when I want to have a laugh, I mean it's better than the Comedy Channel. Who knew journalism could be so bloody entertaining!

The ones voting are ignorant fools actually believing media lies such as the whole Iraq-war-linked-to-9-11- crap. I love it! I love this totally honest, progressive talk! Thank you so much. I think a lot of people around the world are eagerly awaiting the outcome of this election for a variety of reasons: *It was an intriguing race between Hillary Cltinon and Obama and the fact that it was a Woman Vs an African American candidate made it even more interesting. The quest to find the leader of the Democrats was such a long, drawn out one so much so, that it feels as if this election has been running forever; *We've witnessed first-hand the ramifications of a (mentally) ill-equipped President (Dubya) who created an, illegal unjust war/invasion - of a sovereign nation - via unprecedented means (pre-emptive strikes), not to mention the state of the US economy and the 'Domino Effect' it's had on the rest of the globe. People are scared to see another Dubya in power; *And people are hoping to witness an historic election win, Certainly, not in my lifetime did I ever think to see an African American in power. Even the Australian commercial TV stations will be airing the elections because they realise this could be a historic win. I'm really chuffed to see people all over the world rigorously debating politics and the issues that affect us as individuals. No matter what your stand is, the fact that you care and realise that real power lies within the dissemination of knowledge is an achievement in itself. For some reason it reminds me of the time an older woman onc said to me: 'You shouldn't read so much, guys don't like smart women'. My comment back was: 'Well smart women don't like dumb guys who don't like smart women' lol

I second what you are saying Laura. I couldn't possibly agree more with what you two have been saying. I would jump in, but you've covered it all . All i can say is that I hope that some of my fellow Americans who were not as informed as they need to be stumble upon this thread and take to heart what you two have discussed. It's not just the fate of America resting on the outcome of this election, its going to have significant global impact. And I have to agree, the blinders had to be on during the last election when Bush managed to get a second go at it. I'll be the first to admit, as an American, its EMBARRASSING. And Rogue, i think it was you who put in the quote about Sarah Palin being a 72 year old man's heartbeat away from being president. My God, that is the most terrifying thing i've heard in a LOOONG time. And how anyone could POSSIBLY think otherwise will baffle me for as long as I live. Just know that even though you cannot vote, your opinions are VERY MUCH shared and will be represented at the poll by yours truly next Tuesday!
