OK.. Didn't quite get to read everyone's comments because I have a University assignment due in a few hours and I am yet to start it BUT. I am always scared when a band I like releases a new album. RHCP's (and please don't sexually abuse/assassinate me for bringing them up) new album is a complete downgrade from their old stuff.. I mean there are a few genius tracks on there and the guitar is always amazing with RHCP but after I saw them degrade their purity as a band (or maybe just grow old/mature).. I have always been nervous about bands releasing new albums. As for the Sex on Fire videoclip... I never saw it as being a commercial thing... I just saw it as a beautiful piece of art. It has so many nice aesthetics and the motifs/symbols were so clever... even though most of them turned out to mean NOTHING! haha. But I suppose your interpretation will be from the eye with which you look at it - mine always being the arty eye. Anyway.. As for their new found popularity... Good on them.. But I have to admit that I almost vomited (I swallowed it) when I heard Sex on Fire being played in SUPRE (a trashy tween clothes shop in Australia). Luckily JB Hi Fi was about 100m away! But yeah... I do miss having them to myself (like what happened with MGMT before they suddenly became HUGE in a matter of months!). So yeah... Appreciate this thread and that MATURITY has been kept! oh dear God - SUPRE?!?!! they mainly ever play euro trash in there, and they should keep it that way!! lol i agree with you in terms of RHCP - man that lasrt lp was just mediocre!! i feel your pain though - ive said it many times, but this mainstream attention is making me feel sick for my own reasons specified before. by the way - was this supre in Bondi westfield?? haha i just thought so coz JB is a few shops down from supre lol.

you know what double, i know what you're saying.. For fans who have been there since the moment they set foot in the music world, such as us..it is a bit of a shock. But thats what happens when bands are successful.. its unfortunate because I do feel they have lost a bit of their uniqueness, they still had it right up until BOTT, but with this album I'm not so sure anymore. They are great tracks don't get me wrong, but very easy to get over if you know what i mean. BOTT and the records that preceded, I could not get sick of, even now when you don't hear it for a while it's still fresh. But with this album its just different. The only song that has really struck a chord with me and I'm deeply moved by is 'Cold Desert'. I am concerned about the state of what their gigs would be like too.. anyway thats life...

I have always been nervous about bands releasing new albums. I used to be RHCP's biggest fan, really loved them, but when Stadium Aracdium came out, it all changed. That album was literally the biggest pile of crap ever mad, literally. I lost all respect for them for becoming so comercial and, well, just plain shit. I was worried that this would happen with KOL too, thankfully it hasn't. So I guess this proves it is a good change, rather than change for the sake of it. I'm still unsure as to what to think of it all, I think I'm just a little overwhelmed... This post is pointless, I haven't even said anything other than I am plain confused.

I'd say it's a fair comparison - KOL and OBTN with RHCP and Stadium Arcadium. With the exception of one or two songs both albums have seen a shift in style from less "rock" to more "pop". I guess people get older and change. The difference is that the Chilis (with the exception of John Frusciante) were all well over the age of 40 and settled with families when they made Stadium Arcadium. KOL - correct me if I'm wrong - are all still in their 20s so it's a puzzle why the change in style should happen at this point. Anyway, there are some good songs on OBTN so let's not panic, and see what happens with the next one. Oh - and before anyone accuses me of ageism - I'm well on the way to reaching my half century and prefer the style of the older albums of both KOL and RHCP!

Yeah, and RHCP have had, what, 10 albums? KOL have four, they had ages before they need to 'grow up' and make a 'mature' sound. And RHCP have been playing since they were about 17 too, so it's nothing to do with that. John Frusciante is like 38 too.

Scared is the right word, it actually causes me physical pain to hear people playing them, taking about them & liking them, I want to hit them. Ha, I always end up feeling that way about bands when everyone starts to love them. I don't think its so much when everyone has started to like them that bugs me its because some people have started to like them for the wrong reason. Because they're big news right now everyone is 'into' them but they'd never buy the album or listen to their other albums, that kind of annoys me. I don't think I explained that very well Example, I was reading my copy of spin magazine at Uni and 3 people were like 'Ooo he's nice!' (about Caleb) and now they think they like Kings of leon becaue of that! He is nice lol but that doesn't mean you like them. Anyway, I think that went off topic a bit sorry lol

People are STARTING to like Kol for the wrong reasons? Thats is nothing new! There have been people like that since YAYM. You just gotta put up with them while they're going through the phase. Why does it matter anyway? If you love the music that should be the ONLY thing that matters. And as for their image and the media around them that really shouldnt matter either. I mean when you're sitting on the bus coming back from work and the kings are playing on your ipod its the music thats gonna keep you feeling sane on the way home and not the image.
And one more thing-The whole sexy image KOL have got going on is nothing new either. They have been playing that card the WHOLE time. They've just gotten better at it. There are definate sightings of Pouting going on the early days of Kol but the problem was it was ineffective with those sherrif mustaches taking over Calebs face XD
