All these threads need bumping and i can't think of anything specific to say apart from that i totally dig his lyrics! oh and e v e r y o n e who does too, needs to check out Townes Van Sant cause not only is he just mind blowingly blissful but he's also a major influence on Caleb's writing - as i'm sure you all know already. I found the comparison interesting and god do just check out TVS cause really i can't put it into words but he's wow! edit: oops! i was thinking of Gus, i meant Zandt, incase anyone is trying to find him

Oooh whiskers, yup yup yup, TVZ is ace. There's still a lil something extra in Caleb's tone that sends me into raptures tho... must be doing something right when any mix of tracks from any of the albums can make you cry, shout, laugh your arse off, boogy and shag the next vaguely tasty bloke you see all at the same time.
He's got something very, very special and I hope he never gives it up.

Caleb - you're voice is b e a u t i f u l. I think people will come to see your voice as one of the greats.

Someone said earlier in the thread that over the albums his voice seems to have become 'more himself'... while I love the old style, on the last two albums his voice just seem to draw you in even more...maybe it's because of the home movies and the publicity that's surrounded them, I dunno. There's such a rawness there, it just breaks your heart. Phew. And the lyrics...even the cynical ones have a romance about them, in the proper sense of the word...definitions that apply here.... "2. the colorful world, life, or conditions depicted in such tales. " "2. A mysterious or fascinating quality or appeal, as of something adventurous, heroic, or strangely beautiful" "6. ardent; passionate; fervent " "8. of or pertaining to a musical style marked by the free expression of imagination and emotion, virtuosic display, experimentation with form, and adventurous development " You get me

AYYYYYYYY i'm bringing the TVZ out in everyoneee AYYYY i'm listening to flyin shoes. oh goddddd i just LOVe him! i just feel so almost, i know it sounds weird, but kinda complete when i listen to his music. i can't get enough!! you just can't get enough, just can't get enough huh huh huh uh uh huhhh HAHAHAA what? lardydar, i know i said something like that, maybe someone else did to, about Caleb sounding more like himself. I also, and it is worth repeating, think that he has this fantastic quality of singing TO YOU like, maybe it's because of the emotion he puts into his singing, i'm not sure, but it captures yr attention nonetheless lurveee Caleb! oh and also i totally would never have even heard of Townes Van Zandt if it weren't for him, being all in love with the guy and saying it in interviews. so karma to him for that! ayeeeee

TVZ made me cry - went from contempt (i thought the track was corny) to tears in a heartbeat. could have kicked him. but that is talent! which song was it? i usually have a problem with people being all soulful too, i usually think it's corny and somehow not as truthful as like screaming yr guts out on a punk track for instance. but this man is just in his own class. i could go a bit mental and ramble, but shalln't, ohhhh noooo hehehee edit: ok, just let me ramble just a little bit, promise i'll shut up then "all living is laughing, dying says nothing at all" At My Window ohhhhhhhhhhh GOD! think, i'm speechless. rare!

Must be a couple of months since i listened to it, but I'm almost certain it was "Marie". If you listen to that and it's about a homeless, jobless guy with a pregnant wife - that's the one

Was listening to Trani on YAYM a few times in a row last night and it really struck me how upfront Caleb's vocal is - everything else is quite restrained. It just made it noticeable how accomplished that vocal is. Not sure how to say this - It's not pure musical singing from the diaphragm or whatever it is he does now, which does sound beautiful. What it is is pure story telling - the sound he is making with his voice tells the story, along with the lyrics. I suppose it is 'character' singing it seems kind of like acting. It's powerful. He does it a little differently on the Bonnaroo 04 live recording, naturally, it's less controlled, less subtle, a bit more stylised, I think. The story is a little different every time he does it.
Lardydar, do you think that has anything AT ALL to do with what you were getting at?? Maybe generally the earlier albums don't have it, but are there bits? Was really interested to read your comments there as you sing too. (love your voice btw)

^^^ well put tic, I think I might even know precisely what you mean I do love the differences in 'feel' he manages to put in...the lengthened 'chaiiiirrrrr' on the Bonnaroo one, dunno why that makes such a diff, but it does.... love that man. Think this is why Manhattan gets me, when you listen to that you believe him utterly, it so full of passion... *sigh*

^^ Oh - I edited my post with a whole load of other extra stuff - this is the trouble with posting before you finish thinking!!
Yeah Manhattan! - You know that has a real emotional edge, doesn't it. I wonder how much that is because he seems to be singing the whole thing a bit high, like it's nearer the top of his range than other songs - gives maybe a more i don't know certainly emotional - is it yearning feel?? I don't know. Wonder what his range is.

Damn it i missed the townes conversation!! Been banging on about him for months!! I decided to look him up when i heard caleb talking about his influence on him, and i have to say i LOVE him!! I think its prob cause i grew up with my dad listening to willie nelson, kristofferson and cash and my mam listening to patsy. Even though i hated it as a teenager, country has become a big part of my music collection over the last few years...proper country that is none of that new shite! You can really hear townes influence on calebs lyrics and i love that darker side to both their lyrics. Also i've been sitting on this for a while cause i wasnt sure where to put it, but since i'm here i'll admit i love the way caleb says his 'F's especially on revelry but theres a few other songs that i can hear it in. Its a weird one i know but listen out for it

Know what you mean...I'm striving to get that in my own stuff at the mo - getting paranoid about sounding 'cold'...too much listening to KoL, if there is such a thing, making me want to sound different! The edges of your range defo give it things a bit more tension, for want of a better word, closer to breaking and all that... egads, too much Chablis... need to go to bed Loving this convo tho, however protracted it may be And many thanks for the compliment x
