I read about a year ago how everything about KOL was made up and it really wasnt who they are and I fought it. But after attending the show at the Ryman Saturday night I got a whole new perspective on the band and I am a bit dissapointed.
LISTEN BEFORE YOU START BITCHING, KOL IS #2 ON MY LIST OF GREAT BANDS AT THE MOMENT.
I was lucky enough to be sitting upfront and personal with friends and family of the band at the Ryman Saturday and I learned the so called true story of the band. At one point I told a High School friend of Caleb's "Dude, dont tell me anymore, I am starting not to like them already!" Where do I begin?
First off this guy is sitting right next to me at the show, I could tell he wasnt a big fan cause he didnt know much about the band today, he was really just there to support his old friends from High School. (Nathan and Caleb). Anyway, he starts to tell me about times they had in High School and what not, thats when I start to realize, WTF? That is totally opposite from every interview they ever gave. The guy wasnt bashing them, he was just telling me the Caleb and Nathan he grew up with were not the KOL superstars they now are.
I guess everyone has seen the documentary that used be on the official website where they drive through small towns and explain there school life and home life and how they were super religous and moved from town to town staying with friends of the church. Maybe that was true when they were 10, but the story I was told Saturday night is a bit different. Caleb and Nathan went to the same High School, and they were super preppy, not a stitch out of place, so I was told. Caleb used to put his hair up in a little poney tail and play softball with the rest of the jocks. Anyone remember how they say they never even heard of U2 or any rock bands until just like a couple of years ago because of their strict upbringing. Well, in High School Caleb and Nathan both loved BECK, and they used to listen to Mellow Gold everyday. (You be the judge)
Then there is Nathan, apparently he is super embarrased about his preppy past and doesnt want anyone to know it exists. (Cant say I blame him) but, I guy from there town found an old year book with Nathans prom pic. in it, scanned the pic. and brought it for Nathan to sign, Nathan was pissed and denied it was him and left. Hhhmmm......Dont know how old most of you here are, but does anyone remember back in the day when at the local Wal-Mart they had donut stands out front and you could go in the little booth and watch the donuts fry in grease? Nathan and his dad went into one of these booths and the stand was unlevel, the grease dumped out on Nathan causing burns on the front of his body. Guess whats next? A law suit against Wal-Mart!! Which they won millions. (so I am told) Nathan was a millionaire before he ever entered High School. This poor boy country christian image that he portrays today may not be true at all. Nathan also went to college. How often has that been mentioned.
I take these stories to be the truth but I am not certain, just seems a bit fishy to me. I still love the music and it cant be denied, just wish the whole truth would come out in an interview witht the boys.
