buddy holly has a song called 'true love ways'. anyone heard it?
i'm starting to doubt their originality, at least when it comes to naming songs.
unless of course they haven't heard of it and it is just a coincidence.

I don't think it really matters if they drew a little inspiration from a Buddy Holly song or if it's all a coincidence. They're very original in a lot of what they do. A little reference to this song, or an allusion to that one, borrowing a phrase here or re-telling a story there are all meant, I think, to pay homage to the original artist and give the new work a richer meaning, culturally and I think they make things much more interesting. For example Regina Spektor totally rewrites the familiar Samson and Delilah deal. Does that make her unoriginal or a copycat? No! It makes her awesome. I don't know what's going on with the Buddy Holly song (I want to look into it now), but I really don't think we need to worry about their originality. Don't go giving yourself any premature wrinkles over it.

I always thought Kings very original when the point is naming songs... Seriously I do think they're kinda original on this and they've got a few different names. Like, does anyone know another song called Knocked Up, Joe's Head, Trani...?
but thanks for sharing this buddy holly thing, I downloaded the song and I'm gonna listen that

I love both songs so it really doesn't bother me.
Hell, I'd steal titles to Buddy Holly songs too if I was in a band.

Unfortunatly in this day and age very few things are original whether movie's, books, song even recipes so if they have a one title the same as someone else that not bad going, all you need to look on your ipod song list to see how many replicers there are out there.
(Appologies for the spelling I dont think I could spell my own name right tonight.)

She sings: 'Lady sings the blues so well.' which is a clear reference to the film made about Billie Holiday. The whole song is, in fact. I love how people make references like this to other famous singers/actors/historical events/whatever. A few weeks ago there was this article in HUMO about which poets had inspired today's rockstars: Oscar Wilde, J.G. Ballard, Arthur Rimbaud, ... There was a list of bands and songs that referred to those authors and their work. It was quite interesting to read all this, because most of the time you don't even realize the hints songwriters put in their songs.

^that's cool to know. artists borrow stuff of other artists all the time. it's just natural thing to do. what matters there is the way they are doing it. if it's just a rip off with no spirit in it, it's bad. it's has to be done with style.

I work in an antique store in Louisiana that has about 30,000 vinyl records in it, I do the vinyl side of the shop. I came across a Johnny Cash album titled "Man In Black." I flipped it over to see the tracks on the album and there it was, the last track on the LP, a song titled "I Talke To Jesus Every Day." I have no clue if the Kings borrowed this title track to slip it into "The Runner" but who cares. It could be their way of tipping their hat to the way music was and suppose to be. They lived on the same lake as Mr. Cash before he died but never got to meet him. Also, there is a band back in the late 60s called Spiral Staircase. Maybe they took that from them too or perhaps the movie Spiral Staircase. The band mispelled it on purpose though.
