I love Black Thumbnail but I have real difficulty with the lyrics in the chorus. All that talk of not leaving a smell on me and blowing off in your sleep just makes me think of two people lying there in bed having a fart fest. It kind of spoils a great song for me.
Does anyone else have this trouble? And I'm interested to know if the phrase 'blowing off' has the same connotations in the rest of the world as it does in the UK?

gosh i never thought of Black Thumnail like that before! to be honest i didn't understand what Caleb was on about as usual  all i understood about the song was that it was about Caleb never settling down coz he's cold hearted  |

I get the whole blowing off/farting thing. That's what I've known it as. but there's also blowing someone off as in arranging to meet and the person not turning up and you find out they found a better offer, so when you sleep he finds a better offer and leaves before you wake up....... And also blowing off/blowjob...... he waits till you sleep and then blows himself off? Talented!  |

the only part i dont like about this song is the part where he goes
this thumbnail size of heart is black as coal.
and coal is all screechy. no other part in the song is like that. kinda bugs me

Hahaha! Just found this thread! Niko, I thought that too!! I can't listen to Black Thumbnail without thinking of Caleb farting...sorry to bring it down to this level, I'm just glad I'm not the only one who thought this!
p.s I assumed that this was just me mis-interpreting again, didn't think that Caleb really wrote a song about passing wind!

Rosielee and Molly - thanks for putting my mind at rest, I was getting worried! Doesn't matter how many times I listen to this song (and I love it so I listen to it often) that line always startles me.
Much as I love Caleb, dutch ovens ain't my thing!

I'm with you NiKo while I accept that there are other meaning's, to me it always makes me think Caleb has intestinal problems. and I wish he had worded it slightly differently, he would appear to be more mature and not have toilet humor like some of us.
