I love all three albums and I enjoy nearly everything that Ethan Johns puts out (he does most of Ryan Adams' albums), but I wouldnt mind the boys branching out and getting someone new behind the board. I understand that they feel comfortable with Ethan and they love working with him but just think if they got someone else to produce it, what new things could come out of them. What if Rick Rubin started punching buttons for KOL, I bet that would be an off the wall album. Thats just me thinking. Anyone else ever think about this?

If it's not broke, don't fix it. Look how commercial Linkin Park and Red Hot Chili Peppers are... would you want KOL like that? I wouldn't.

I totally understand the "if it's not broke, dont fix it" rule. I am just saying I wouldn't mind seeing someone new being the board. I just used Rick Rubin as an example because he is one of the best producers out there. He didn't make RHCP commercial, he just said "thats good but I think you can do better." They (RHCP) were the ones who decided to push themselves further. He just egged them on. ASH was a huge leap from Y&YM and BotT went somewhere between the two. I think at some point they will break away from Ethan and go with someone new.

Not Rick Rubin.
I love a lot of the work he has done (RHCP, Rage Against the Machine, System of a Down), but I'm not sure KOL would be his thing. He has done an awful lot of stuff, from Jay-Z to Johnny Cash, Slayer to Neil Diamond, but maybe not KOL.
I think someone like Alan Moulder who has worked with Smashing Pumpkins would be a interesting mix.
Or Brian Eno who has worked with U2 a lot and apparently is working with Coldplay for their next one.
But for me really, I see no need for a change.
Only change producers if either the work is not good (which it is - it's developing and really working, so why change?) or if they don't get along (which they obvioulsly do - they've done 3 albums together).

I believe Rick Rubin just produced Metallica's new album and is currently working on the new U2 album. I doubt it would work, but if KOL did hook up with Rubin, the album would be something from left field. Look at Ryan Adams' career, Ethan has produced 6 of his 9 albums. His new one is getting the title "Best Album of his Career" and it was with someone besides Ethan. They might work good together but they might work better with someone else. On the flip side, the new guy could suck, but I am sure Ethan would welcome them back. KOL can call up Bono and talk to him about Rubin and Eno. Bono would never lead them astray.

If they decide to go with a new producer that's their prerogative but I think the fact that they are so comfortable with Ethan is directly related to their improvement as musicians. I like the idea of loyalty between a band and its support system ... it's rare in the industry and makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. And therefore kind of nauseated ... but in a good way.

I think they should just stick with the producers they have. Or maybe they could just produce the next album solely by themselves. I have faith that they could pull it off.

ITA. Ethan rocks. Just as someone else had said. Don't fix something that is not broken.

haha, classic quelquefois....
Anyway, I think producers that allow them to do a lot of the work live...which is the way I understand the first album was recorded. I think that they have so much energy live that to get pretty much everything in a single take allows KOL's charm to be transfered to the albums...So I think their current producer does a wonderful job with that...it's a very similar style to Mick Jones when he works with Pete Doherty (Babyshambles or The Libertines' first album). But I worship at Mick Jones' feet...(seriously, I'm naming a child after him), so I'm a little biased.

Why don't they just produce their next album themselves? I, as a musician, produce all of my own music and it's not that hard. I'll record a song (lay down all tracks, etc.) and listen to it over again and add, take away parts if I feel necessary. I honestly view producers as a middle man and in some instances can change a bands true sound into something else. Many of the best bands out their (granted, it was in the past) have produced their own albums. Pink Floyd produced every one of their albums written as a band (i.e. pre-The Wall) and they wrote some of the best music out there. So did Zep. So, I think that KOL, now on their fourth fucking album, would be able to self-produce a masterpiece.
