" Ornery cuss" is a descriptive colloquialism used in the American South to denote a person who has a slightly roguish streak to their character. The person is not necessarily wicked, but they are generally not upstanding citizens. The term is included in the lyrics to the Kings Of Leon's "Black Thumbnail." The word "ornery," which is chiefly used in America, supposedly evolved from the word "ordinary." Therefore, when applied to a person, it might originally have been synonymous with "common" or even "vulgar." When applying the noun "cuss" to a person, it basically means "someone you cuss at." The term is also easily applied to animals. The following is an example of "ornery cuss:" I was out looking for Caleb and guess what? That ornery cuss is passed out on the train tracks! -From the Leonopædia

Being from Oklahoma I have been described as " ornery " my entire life.
It just means that you are little left of center. You like trouble and are always finding ways to get into it but smart enough to know when to stay out of it.
Cuss is a southern way of saying " punk " . That little punk. You could change to That little cuss.
In the song he is saying those preppy boys shouldnt be f-ing with them becuase they are not afriad to go toe to toe if need be.
In high school a my girlfreinds mother told me I had ornery eyes.
She was right.
