For me this has been my favourite KOL track since I heard the first album and still is. I noticed the other day while browsing this forum its also alot of others aswell which surprised me as its such a low profile song. Never released and doesn't seem to have the status of Trani, Taper Jean Girl, Day Old Blues, Spiral Staircase or Soft.
What is it you like about it? For me its the wild storey in a song, the fact it seems like a sequel to Hendrix's "Hey Joe" and THE PIANO AT THE END IS FRIGGIN AWESOME!!

But ... Was Joes Fat friend actually nammed Fred or did the main protaganist just decide to call him Fred because he looked like a Fred?

I never thought this song got enough attention when Youth & Young Manhood first came out, but I always loved it. One of the more fun ones to sing in your car as loud as possible so that cars next to you at red lights can give you confused stares.

But I can't listen to it without questioning the usage of the verb to call.

The bassline is awesome in that song. And yes, the story is interesting, I wonder where they've got that idea from.

But "decided to call his fat friend Fred" Could indicate a decision to name Joes Fat friend(who the protaganist may or maynot know the name of ) Fred. I f the guy with the gun decides to call you Fred you don't argue. A bit like in Kill bill part one where they decide to call the waiter Charlie Brown, he's not in a place to argue. This guy could be called Billy-sue for all the protaganist in Joes head cares he decides to call him Fred and if he doesn't answer to Fred then he may also end up dead so he has to p-lay along.

But doesn't that seem a bit too.... deep?
I mean, c'mon. No one really goes that deep or descriptive during the songwriting process.
I always imagined A guy worried and sweating, calling someone on a payphone, And telling them what he just did when I listen to Joe's head.
Does all of that make sense???
Caleb himself probably hasn't put as much thought into this as we have.

No one really goes that deep or descriptive during the songwriting process. I do! When I did my BTEC in Popular music the tutors had to find a dictionary to work out what the hell I was writing about, they gave me a distinction. But until I get satisfactory proof of the intention of the verb to Call I will keep bringing it up. I will never surender!
