First off, I don't have an opinion on the question I've asked, I just want to know if anyone else has. A friend of mine who's in a band was told by a music journalist for The Fly magazine that KOL didn't write their own songs. This morning, someone else mentioned the same rumour to me in an email. Is it just a malicious rumour, or does anyone have any knowledge about it?

*sighs* this always makes me annooyyed. not your fault though disco man right, rumours were started by music journo types that they were completely manufactured and didnt write their own songs, mostly because during the writing/recording of yaym they worked with a really well known songwriter called angelo petraglia [he wrote for the mavericks and a lot of country singers]. Anyway the truth is that yes, he helped them out with the songwriting and recording on the album but caleb and nathan wrote the songs, this is what jared said in an interview we did with him:
Angelo is our best friend and mentor. Caleb and Nathan had been writing songs for a year and a half with him before the band was. He brings alot of inspiration. He does not write our songs or come up w / our parts for us. He just helps the process. If he doesn't like something sometimes we will come up w / something different and it usually ends up sounding a good bit better.
we spoke to caleb about writing and how they put the band together and it seems like it was a very natural process. according tothem they hate the industry except the musicians and the fans. anyway the fact that caleb and nathan have writing credits on all the songs speaks for itself and the guys are all writing together for the new album. so in a word, no

thanks Sarah, that's interesting. Thanks for clearing that up for me - and for being polite when a board newbie posts an old question. That 'manufactured' rumour is one that's dogged them since the start, though, isn't it? It's a shame - after all, there's a proud line of bands with additional (sometimes uncredited) members: The Beatles and George Martin, U2 and Brian Eno, even The Strokes and J.P. Bowersock. Many people consider 'Screamadelica' by Primal Scream actually to be an Andrew Weatherall remix album. From what I can tell, a lot of producers have an often uncredited influence. For instance, apparently Peter Hook of New Order has on more than one occasion gone into the studio having never heard the material, played some more or less random notes in a Hooky style on the bass, then turned round to the producer and said 'You've got enough there, haven't you?' - meaning that the producer should write the bassline out of the collection of notes and phrases he just played. So, having a mate advise on songwriting is hardly the same as being Girls Aloud, I guess.

FWIW - I do like KOL. A lot. Easily best new band of 2003. I've even grown a beard this year! I'm just a trainspotter for music trivia and I wanted to ask the people in the know about the rumour. Thanks again.
