Hey guys,
So I listen to a lot of old music as I'm predominantly a rock fan, and last night I was listening to Neil Young (On The Beach, Time Fades Away, Tonight's The Night etc.) , and I was just thinking about him, and artists like him, in relation to KOL. Like now KOL are pretty much accepted as the biggest rock band in the world, (or the most important or however you would like to phrase it) but what if those Neil Young albums, or other rock albums similar to them released in the late 60s / 70s, were released now. Would we look at them differently when we compare them to KOL? Because I feel like those songs, some of them when you look at them and dissect them, are relatively simple technically, but they just have a feeling about them, and a passion, which you can certainly say for KOL, e.g. Caleb's vocals. What I'm getting at I guess is I don't understand why other bands aren't like KOL in a sense (I know I know it's impossible to "be like KOL" but stick with me here). Why do all these rock bands keep trying to use electro in their songs, or have weird gimmicks, or any of that kind of stuff? Because I feel like I'm afraid KOL are veering ever so slightly into that realm of using synths and using this and that, and everyone around them applauds them whatever they do, and the boys say it's for the sake of the music, for the good of the song, but is it? Or is it just a fear that if they make a straight up rock album it won't be seen as progressive enough. On this forum I know it's been discussed at length, the changing of their sound, and how we shouldn't care that soccer moms and four year olds like them, but just because a band says they don't try to be more popular or mainstream, doesn't mean that's really how they feel, because if you were one of the guys and someone asked you wouldn't you deny it to maintain your artistic integrity? At the same time I think the boys are honest and serious about their music, and I can see how it may be hard to say to yourself "I need to write better songs" because at the end of the day it's still gonna be just a song, with two guitars, bass and drums, no different input to any other song they've written, so how do they make it better? Do you think it's impossible now for someone to release an album like those Neil Young albums and still be successful?
p.s. I'm sorry! I know this was a stupidly long rant, I just needed to get that out of my head! If you have an opinion please post I would really like to discuss!
