theres are no songs similar to crawl or charmer, both are heavy/thrash metal compared to this album, i wish there was a riff like that, i dont hate the album nor dislike it, but it just lacks that "something", to me its like they needed to release a record as fast as possible and not missing the success after obtn, almost by obligation
im sure they had fun recording it and they did what they felt like doing but i didnt like the result, actually im starting to appreciate more OBTN

Anyway, Ali just told me there are a couple of heavy songs in the vein of Crawl/Charmer, I love a good old heavy riff you see. There are a couple that are heavier and rockier and have good riffs, but I'm not sure there's anything that sounds loads like them. Sorry if I didn't make that clear in my tweet.

I meant, not necessarily charmer/Crawl 2, but you know, something equally as rock, oh well, I'll see by myself lol, at the end of the day its KOL.

I wasn't in love with the record from the 1st listen, but now I am. it's a great continuation from OBTN. It sounds the most like them, imo. It's kind of different from their other stuff -I think- but it takes time to get used to. Job well done, Followills. I think Pony Up is my favorite. Pickup Truck is also beautiful.. they all are.

i've had this album on since like the ass crack of dawn yesterday morning and i still don't know how to feel. i'm not going to compare any of the new songs with any old songs because there's really no comparison, in my opinion. i said it yesterday that i'm not entirely fond of the recorded version of southbound, but i know there will always be a lot of differences between album and live versions, so i have to give them that. i'm still letting it grow on me, but my first initial reaction was that it was awful. i have changed my opinion on that and i can't really say that it's awful, so i retract what i said, but it's still not what i was hoping for. i kind of feel like when they played some of the new stuff live, it was like a movie trailer. you see all the best parts in the commercial, and the rest is just filler. that's kind of how i felt about my first listen. all the songs they played live were the best tracks on the album (spare radioactive, but w/e).
now that i've played the album at least two dozen times, i can say that it's growing on me a lot more. songs like 'birthday' and 'mi amigo' are definitely catchy tunes and they've surprised me. 'mary' was another of my favorites that i felt was ruined by the studio recording, but i'm still letting it sink in and i think i can dig it. 'pick up truck' blows me away, it's just as good as it was when they played it in august. 'the end' is pretty awesome and 'pyro' is very good. the rest are still settling in, but i don't hate them. it'll take me a long time to really love this album, but for now i'm kind of just tolerating it. i have to keep in mind that they're evolving and they'll never sound the way they used to, so it's still hard for me to chew on. it's not as bad as it could be, but for now its a level above mediocre. my opinion is subject to change, it happened with BOTT which quickly because one of my favorite albums. the more i hear it, the more i like about it, so i could love it in a week, but we'll see.

I haven't listened to it yet (I'm gonna try to stick it out till I have the actual album), but I love reading the comments. From the sounds of it, it appears to be a proper grower, which I think is a good sign. Immediate likes usually get old real fast, imo.

For the record, I listened to the album at least 4 times before I posted what I thought of it. I guess I should've said that it had to grow on me. First listen, I swear I couldn't differentiate Beach Side/No Money/Pony Up/Birthday but now I'm starting to see what's going on with them. I love the funk of Beach Side, this is the kind of song that made me say this is the coolest record to come out in 2010. No Money rocks pretty hard, but only as hard as the production will let it (this will be permanent on the set list for years though), but that chorus is what stuck with me "I got no money but I want you so." Pony Up is basically Jared's song, much like Razz where the bass makes the song. Birthday I feel has lyrics that are a little bit on the lazy side (maybe next time we can write the songs on paper first, Caleb, the freestyle thing works better for Lil Wayne), however it still jams. Mi Amigo is one of my favorites, and you start to see that most of this album is about drunken nights out and yearning for acceptance. It's not profound, but Kings didn't become my favorite band for having pretentious, socially conscious rhymes. They're no Radiohead and this is not OK Computer. Kings of Leon just make tunes. The hipsters are gonna hate, but it's ok, I'll just crack another beer and throw on a little Come Around Sundown and party on.
Oh yeah, and The Face kicks ass. What a song.

Okay last night I switched off Twitter (still angry ... will stay away from there for a while) ... switched off the TV ... went to bed ... put the biggest headphones on I could find in my dash and listened to the album literally the WHOLE night ... and I have to admit that it DID grow on me!
I say this ... the album DOES sound beachy (not necessarily a bad thing) ... but I think the lyrics are much deeper than OBTN and very diverse (not that I undertand everything as he still mumbles a lot LOL ... Calebish it is indeed) ... whereas it is clearly missing YAYM or BOTT edge & rock I really like Matthews guittar play and Calebs voice in some of the songs is just off the hook ... it is a little overproduced but I like that they tried so many new things!
I am sure I will looooooooooooove the live versions of the songs and that a proper bootleg will replace the produced CD soon. But it is a great record and an amazing addition to an already outstanding collection of big variety. KOL rule! I am sure with this one (expecially the lyrics) they will get the love of some "old" fans back and wont loose too many "new" fans.
Fav songs: RADIOACTIVE (without the choir HELL YES!), PYRO, MARY, THE FACE (even if he sings "if you leave behind NY I give you Tennesse" --- clearly written for the one I wont mention), PICK UP TRUCK (and he does sing "bloody tooth" LOL).
Least fav songs: Back Down South (I loooooooove the live version but cant stand the slow, overproduced album version - its still not country enough for me ).

Sorry for being a sort of proverbial Judas right now, but I actually love the record version of Mary - it doesn't rock as hard as the live version but that's what makes it special. So you can hear the recorded version and be like "this song is badass" then you go to a concert and they play it and you're like "HOLY SHIT ROCK MY FACE"
And to everyone who doesn't like it, that's cool. But since music taste is almost as unique as a fingerprint, there's no reason for you to insult people that do like it. So say you hate the album, I'll nod and smile, and go back to listening to it on repeat. Have a nice day.

There's something about 'The Immortals' that I really love, it gave me shivers the first time I heard it in full.

This album is definitely a grower........I like it very much...........the only thing that i complain is that the live version is way better than the studio cd. A change for me, cause all the previous stuff that they did live was pretty similar to the studio version.
Now i can understand what they said about add some things to make the album worse

My two cents: Overall for me there are some amazing songs that I am in awe of, and some I can't even remember, but I guess I would rather have like 5 brave, experimental, interesting songs and a bunch of generic ones than them just doing what they thought they should to remain relevant and popular. Nothing about this record is generic. It is without a doubt, at least in my opinion, their most experimental album to date. They're not resting on their laurels, and they certainly didn't do anything to "remain...popular." I read somehwere CAS described as silmultaneously "challenging, soothing, difficult to categorize and thrilling from its opening seconds." KOL's sound and spirit are completely unique, and they exist without any precursor or any likelihood that a successor will be able to replicate them. I haven't decided which are my favorite songs yet, but CAS is the type of record that demands to be listened to. You have to do so at least three or four times to even come close to being able to fully appreciate how expansive and groovy and soulful it really is.

KOL's sound and spirit are completely unique, and they exist without any precursor or any likelihood that a successor will be able to replicate them. I think you misunderstood what I was saying: I judge KOL songs differently to other band's work, so if I say a song is generic I mean that for KOL's high standards certain songs on CAS aren't as significant as something like "The End" or "The Face" or "Pickup Truck" etc., where you can listen to it and it has this definite identity and no other band could have written it. Also I didn't at all say they did anything just to "remain popular", I meant the opposite, that I'd rather see them follow crazy ambitions and only get halfway there than conform because they've found a comfort zone, and for me this record just wasn't a 100% knockout. Also I don't think any band will be able to replicate them, but then again no band can ever successfully replicate any other band regardless, it's not possible. Caleb wants to write like Townes Van Zandt but through his filter it comes out recognizably KOL even if he tried his hardest.

Caleb sings openly but also has the draw and mush mouth back like the first two records. *goes wibbly at the knees* you'd better not be lying mister!!
