So firstly, a word of advice for everyone--check if the concert you are traveling to is in your time zone.
We gave ourselves plenty of time to drive from Chicago to Detroit/Clarkston, and figured we'd be there about 8:30pm, with the Kings coming on at 9:30p.
Well, not 10 min after we got to our seats, the red smoke billowed, and out they came.
Phew.
As my mom says, G-d protects the stupid (in this case, us )
Now...what to say about the DEAD crowd.
I dont know.
We had pretty good seats, on Jared's side of the stage, but a little further than we usually sit, so actually, for the 1st time in my life, i've been able to observe the crowd a lot more.
The pit section at the venue is really small, and oddly, it seemed to have been filled with older folks, we are talking late 40's and 50s, and a couple of girls who seemed to have known the material. The rest of the crowd knew NOTHING except for USE and SOF. We did have a good laugh at a couple of girls who heard the beginning of USE and ran, pushing others out of the way, spilling their gigantic beers, screaming "It's my FAVORITE song". I am sure it is. The woman next to me was texting the ENTIRE night, with barely a few glances at the stage. The other woman, on my friend's side, gushed, "OMG, I LOVE their older material!!!!" I was surprised. Then "Fans" and "Milk" came on and she exclaimed, "There are really good! Are they new?" Maybe not as big a fan as she thought she was. Two dudes in front of us clearly didnt know where they were. I think they were expecting 50 Cent. They sat still thru the 1st four songs. Then they got up, crossed their arms on their chest and stood still, in silence, for another couple of songs. Then they left.
Judging by the crowd, there are a LOT of people in Detroit who can plunk down an average of $70-80, just to come, drink overpriced beer and text at a concert.
Now, a lot's been said about Caleb's propensity for ranting at unresponsive audiences and all that. Here, he didnt even bother. No friendly banter. Two uninspired shots, though he could've done a lot more, as it was quite cold outside and I've seen him chug down 4-5 shots in the same space of time. He hardly said anything. No jokes, no rambling speeches, other than some comment about singing along to SOF and being surprised at the number of people attending.
It really was annoying to see the guys give a very good performance, with an AMAZING rendition of "Mary", and a great "Trani", as well as "My Party", to end with an awesome "Black Thumbnail", and be rewarded with almost nothing from the audience. Seems like at one point, they just decided to play a really good show for themselves and the 5 fans in the audience.
Anyway, at least we got to enjoy ourselves and get our sing and dance on.
Surprise of the night--Jared getting VERY into "Trani" and almost doing the old strut/jump along the stage. At the end he stayed still, but clearly enjoyed himself.
Matt's really coming into his own.
Definitely a difference between the last tour and this tour. He is rocking!
