I don't get wat all this is about? I like Kings of Leon because they make (what I consider to be) good music. They could tell me that they want to be the biggest, most famous band in the world and then the next day they go on record as saying that they hate being famous and it wouldn't make a difference to me. Spiral Staircase would still sound the same so its irrelevant. They're not my friends or family so they can say what they want as long as they keep making music that I enjoy. I don't see how you can trust someone you have never met or why that should matter when it comes to a form of art. I like their music and noones going to make me think otherwise, the only factor in it is whether my brain starts disliking their music. This is of course just my personal opinion, I merely don't understand why anything other than their sound should enter the equation.

Bingo bango ^^^ well said fella. I won't deny I like looking at them, I'm only human but it's no diff to me what they say or whether they look like a Deep Southâ„¢ Bernard Manning, as long as they keep making the music I love.

aye karamba.
i'm so so so looking forward to hearing their new stuff. first and foremost, because i'm interested in how it's gonna sound and the direction they've headed towards. but then having said that, it would be interesting to see if it's as popular as obtn. i know, as a fan it shouldn't matter, but that's just the kind of person i am. i'd be interested to hear what the band actually, truly think, not just bits we've read in interviews, but like what they say behind closed doors. i guess we'll never know! it does confuse me though, to hear caleb say things like 'now mums will be bopping to our music' or whatever he said when fans was released. i wonder how the other guys see it.

Popularity is a doubled edged sword, isn't it? It brings recognition and status, but kicks mud all over privacy and intimacy.
Saminto has a good attitude. The music either grabs you or it doesn't.
I was thinking earlier - I loved Oasis first album, appreciated the second, and didn't care for much after that. But I never gave two thoughts about what it meant regarding their musical direction or their popularity, I just loved the earlier stuff and didn't care much for what came later. I still consider them a good band.
Same with Metallica - Awesome first three records. A turning point on their fourth, then a whole new popularity and audience from there on out. As much as they've had controversy and (probably the biggest ever) accusations of selling out, it doesn't matter to me. I listen to the stuff I love and ignore the rest. It's not personal.

Get back to Leeds sharpish! like they have one foot on the john peel stage & the other on the pyramid stage. Brilliant metaphor whiskers thanks! i thought it sounded a little more interesting

it does confuse me though, to hear caleb say things like 'now mums will be bopping to our music' or whatever he said when fans was released. i wonder how the other guys see it. I really think Caleb meant that as people liking the band/music for the wrong reason. Fans (like SOF) is a pretty catchy song, easy on the ear, something you don't have to listen too hard for to like it. The people who like that song might not like anything else. Years ago my friend 'complained' about the same thing with Bon Jovi (of who she's a big fan); they put out rock songs for year on end and then have a hit with a slow track like Always and started selling more albums and more tickets and none of those fans knew any of the other songs either. But that wasn't the point you tried to make with this thread. I guess fame as a whole is a strange thing. You start a band cos you like to play music, and when you're good you want to record something. Then all of a sudden it starts to sell and you have to go out and tour and talk about it all the time and appear everywhere when all you ever wanted to do was play music. Thing is, you may want certain things, but you don't know how they will be for real, so they can disappoint, making you adjust what you want(ed). The KOL guys have at least been used to all the travelling, but for most other musicians the whole touring thing is such a culture shock. Some people even dislike it so much they pull out of a tour or just quit being a performer altogether. And as a fan it's also strange to see a/any band grow. The small venues are really intimate, chances of meeting the band before or afterwards are still high, they're just regular fun guys (usually no egos at that point) who would exchange their email address and their music is still really fresh/raw. After a while the music gets more polished, because there's more money available for high end producers, venues are getting bigger, egos (can) start to develop, it's harder to meet the band because they'll have security etc. and they never respond to messages anymore because everyone wants a piece of their ass now. I hope that made sense..

Yes, I like them because of the way they sound, not because of what they say to various media sources. I'm trying not to sound rude when I say I don't see what your post is trying to get at?

I'm trying not to sound rude by being short with you when you failed to get my point in the first place. I am sorry i can't find the patience to reply to you and explain to you, firstly, what my point was and secondly why i simply can't find the motivation to spell it out to you. Could we leave it there?

Can I just say that I agree completely with the person who started the thread? I've been a fan since 2003. Now, I listen to a lot of indie music and I have known about PLENTY & PLENTY & PLENTY of bands before they hit the mainstream. But Kings of Leon is different to me. They are my second favorite band of all time and I can't even fathom that they are so huge and that my friends who listen to ONLY mainstream radio and like Taylor Swift and Rihanna have downloaded "Use Somebody" after the MTV Movie Awards. I don't care how elitist I am when it comes to music. I mean, I am VERY happy for KOL & the fact that they are finally getting their well-deserved recognition in the US. But it BOTHERS ME, that so many of these new fans DON'T appreciate their old work on Youth & Young Manhood, or Aha Shake Heartbreak, or EVEN Because of The Times. That's what bothers me the most. There are so many bandwagon fans who will base KOL ONLY on SOF and Use Somebody but that isn't the KOL I know and came to love.

i think they deserve the recognition they are getting! i sort of agree that so many of the new fans who dont appreciate their old work - Youth & Young Manhood, Aha Shake Heartbreak, or Because of The Times kinda piss me off a little because kol are so good and have made such good music that they are not appreciating it but its sort of their loss, all i need to know is that im a dedicated fan who loves kol and that im happy for them that they are getting recognition that deserve and that they have worked hard for and who am i to say what people should listen to and to think that the whole fame thing is 'too weird' and that they have gotten to famous.. KOL are amazing.. thats all i need to know ♥

And they've gained enough of a fan base that they can put out a total stinker like St. Anger and still come back from it with their latest (kickass) album.
