I lost my shit the second I saw that! It was like, I didn't see it coming but I'm so happy for them. Grammys have been shit for a good while but when KOL, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Jazmine Sullivan, Janelle Monae, Estelle, Mr. Lupe Fiasco, Flight of the Conchords, and Kathy Griffin get noms it's sort of worth it this year.
Of course there are the obvious and the poppy folks but I think this is a great honor for them even amongst all of the others. I'm truly proud of them. More noms to come in the future for these guys! They deserve it!

Truth be told, I've always thought the Grammies were a bit of a joke, as they usually get handed out to such crap artists, but I'm so thrilled to see that KOL are actually on the ballot! Finally a good band getting some recognition! They truly do deserve to win...I mean, if the academy can just dole out awards to one-hit wonders and artists like Evanescence, surely they can recognize a band that's put out 4 excellent albums in the last 6 years, each one differing from the other.

Why is everyone so happy.
Tonight at the Grammys: Celine Dion, Lil Wayne featuring T-Pain, the Jonas Brothers, and Jared Followill.
This is horrible and I might cry.

fkn hell. im not happy about this. it's not like im trying to say "kings of leon sold out because they have a popular record!!"
no, that's not the goal.
i just cant fuckign believe that only by the night, obviously their most overproduced and radio friendly album, is nominated for a grammy. well sure, i guess i can believe that, i just dont want to.
only by the night is nominated for a grammy. youth and young manhood, aha shake heartbreak, and because of the times exist... i just.... where's the justice? oh yeah sure those albums are amazing but the "stupid public doesnt know good music if it bit them in the arse"
yeah well the public noticed this one... just saying.
pissed the heck off.
jonas brothers and the kings of leon.
im gonna go listen to trani and try to remember the good old days

Listen let me explain before everyone smites me to death.
I just didn't take the Grammy news as exciting or heartwarming...it just made me sad. I know most people on this site really enjoy the new album and think it's great that the Kings are getting so popular. But to be lumped in next to Coldplay and Metallica on "Best Rock Band" at the Grammys which is almost notorious for always snubbing the best bands, I think is just a testament to how much the Kings' music has changed. If it was any of their other albums being nominated I'd be thrilled, but I just think it's such a shame that Only by the Night, by far their most mainstram, over-produced album, is the one getting all the glory. I feel like the old Kings couldn't have been bothered with the GRAMMY'S, you know? Now all of a sudden Sex on Fire is nominated for Best Song while King of the Rodeo was obviously so much better and such a different type of music, its like Aha Shake and OBTN are two DIFFERENT bands.
I'll still, obviously, be watching the Grammys and I guess I'll be happy if they win. It's just really weird to think of the likes of Nathan making an acceptance speech at the Grammys. I guess they just seem too good for that or something, I don't like them reaching such a Mainstream point.
You can still smite me if you want, but know that I'm the world's biggest fan, I just had to speak my mind on this

*shrugs* Eh, no one's going to ruin this moment for me. They f'in deserve it as far as I'm concerned and to be lumped next to acts like Coldplay and Metallica (esp. Metallica) is an honor. I'm proud that their music is being recognized. Would I have liked their other crap to be up there too? Sure, but I mean, if that were the case, I can name a hell of a lot of groups and singers that shoulda, coulda, woulda and didn't. I guess (like I've said a billion times already) I don't see the big deal. It's a prestigious award, even if the actual show is beyond silly at this point. OBTN is a very good album. Best of the year? Not really. I wonder where many of you all would be if OBTN was their first album. Then again, you can't please everyone... That's my two cents, and I'm still proud of them and hope to hell they win, though I loved that Coldplay album.

Well the way I look at this nomination is like a lifetime achievement type thing. You've had great directors and great musicians who've never won these really mainstream awards and all of a sudden these institutions are like, "Hey, let's give 'em one because all in all, they're really great."
So I can sort of understand what those who are upset about the nom are saying but I see it as that moment when Martin Scorsese finally took one home for "The Departed." It was like, Fuck, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, and Goodfellas are a helluva lot better than "The Departed" but let's hand one over for it because it was good and it makes up for lost time. Do you know what I'm saying?
I'm just really happy for the boys to finally get some recognition even if it's not from their most underground and better work as artists. It gives people the opportunity to look at the boys, check out their older work, and push them, just as much as we do, to make albums that are different but albums that don't stray away from who they are. I just knew that this thread would turn into mild outrage but I think we all need to look at it in a different light.

Bravo for the boys, not OBTN teikoo, you hit the nail right on the head with that little statement. It's the boys personally, we should be happy for, not the album they've been nominated for. Karma when I can.

I agree with Teikoo about being personally happy for the boys - they deserve this (not necessarily for OBTN, but better late than never!)
And I totally agree with Letterno16 about the Martin Scorcese comparison - that's how I'm looking at it!

I just knew that this thread would turn into mild outrage but I think we all need to look at it in a different light. Lifetime achievement award? C'mon people, they've only been recording for 6 years! It's not like they're ready for a nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Am I the only one who thinks album sales and chart position have a LOT to do who who/what gets nominated? It's not about quality, it's about visibility and $$. Which is why ASH and BOTT never had a chance of getting a Grammy nomination. Look at it this way, OBTN getting nominated for best rock album raises the bar for quality in that category. The other four nominees pale in comparison, imo. Which is what KOL have said they always wanted, to bring good music back into the mainstream. Right?

Well this isn't too much of a surprise is it? whichever way you choose to take it. Well the way I look at this nomination is like a lifetime achievement type thing. You've had great directors and great musicians who've never won these really mainstream awards and all of a sudden these institutions are like, "Hey, let's give 'em one because all in all, they're really great." Do you know what I'm saying? Yep - I know exactly what you are saying and I would very much like to think this is the truth of it, but who knows? Let's hope it is! When I think over the awards I have witnessed given out for everything ranging from the oscars, to art awards to 'tidiest draw in the class' to 'best fancy dress' I am left with one conclusion: Awards are, sometimes to a great degree, arbitrary and subjective. Enjoy it if you get one - and I hope KOL do! - but it is not good to take them too seriously, is it? edit: actually, I think swimming awards are probably worth taking seriously. Oh, and I think I can echo Teikoo when she says 'Bravo for the boys, not OBTN'

If more of their songs were played on the radio like Sex On Fire is then they would already be as popular with EVERYONE as they are now. I have been listening to them since the demo & if I mentioned them to anyone they would always ask if they were on the radio! I just think that hearing a song mainstream is what gets people. The Kings haven't changed, they are just FINALLY getting heard by all!

Just be happy for the band you love. This is what they've been working for this year, a bit of recognition from the country they were raised in, just shaddup whining and congratulate them.

They are getting what they deserve now so can we not just be happy? ?
