What do you think of them? As a whole, I don't like the effects, it worked in On Call because it was really only in the beginning. But, with songs like Revelry, which could be utterly beautiful, they ruin the subtleties of the instruments by covering with electronica. I mean, they're not Faithless, they don't need to use distortions, fancy pedals and beats that come from a machine. I sort of blame the producers, they're obviously fans of over-production, but for me, it masks their talent and covers too much up. Opinions, please?

Totally agree Lizzy, I said that from the begining i thought it was over-produced. And i got attacked for it.

yeah it is way over produced and the effects are quite repeated throughout the album,i think crawl was the only one that sounded like simple distortion ,even sex on fire had a slight effect running through it :

im sorry ...but do u guys really think KOL have been going around for the last 5 years without using ne effects..
the synth is not an effects its an instrument.
you should be referring to the mastering and mixing of the album and not effects... ther very different things.,

yeah true but i think that why there was a ' , ' seperating the synth and effects in the thread title,i think we already knew they were completely different,i just have bad grammar for what i was trying to say
i think we also know about the use of synth on past albums, what the message was over the over use of synth and effects on this album, which i think everyone agrees is over produced

I think they wanted an "over-produced" sound. Of course I've never talked to them so I don't know. But why else would they claim to have wanted to write this album (not only because of Glastonbury) before they didn't have the chance, or before the world ended. I feel like it was their goal to make a crystal clear album like this one. Even if it's our least favorite.

I love all the effects etc on this album. I love the fact its crystal clear ... if you listen to OBTN through headphones its amazing, if you then listen to the first two albums, i feel like i wanna keep turning the volume up and up cos i can't hear the sounds so clear. Can't remember whether i saw it or read it, but Caleb said they wanted the sound to be clear, cos in the past when releasing singles there songs were the better song but other bands songs were produced better, therefore could hear the beats and solo's much clearer. I much prefer the live versions of old songs just cos of some of the changes they have made. I just think this album is gonna be EMMENSE live, iv already heard Crawl (my Fav), Manhatten and Sex On Fire - which blew me away. Hurry, Hurry December !

I like the effects and what not but I don't like it to be over-done.

I feel like it was their goal to make a crystal clear album like this one. Even if it's our least favorite. it's not MY least favourite like some people already said (can't remember the names osrry!) they've always used effects. now they use other effects and they experiment more and more. i'm ok with that, a band has to try different things. i wouldn't want them to say "ookay, now THATS the music we always wanted to make" and they kepp making a kind of music over and over and over again. a band has to develop. nobody says they'll stay this way forever...maybe they'll make a record in a couple of years that totally sounds like their early ones...who knows!

na like someone else said you're confusing the two things....one is what kings of leon themselves as musicians use, or apply after....and if you're talkin about the clarity of it, then yea thats to do with the mixing and mastering.
and yea theyve always used distortion, whats wrong with at? all the other effects are still purely effects, just like distortion....
i do however remember caleb saying 'i wish we didnt have to use any effects pedals at all' way back in 2003 lol
and what you mean beats from a machine?

Jared plays a microkorg. It's that tiny little keyboard or synth. Not sure what songs he plays it on besides On Call and Fans. I have one as well, but not because of Jared.

that isnt an actual word. No, but pedantic is HIGH FIVE!! Anyways, for me, it's all too much, I don't like 10 layers of noise, it just takes away from it. I love to be able to get to know each intrument's part through out each song, and they make it really hard, because I can't tell what's what. I'm all for a bit of machine in it to make it better, but when they take away from it for me, that's when it becomes too much.
