i dont really think its about the alter ego of rooster..because the song is about a girls sex on fire..i keep thinking hes trying to get over a girl that was the greatest ..and theyre doing a ritual just like some girls do with the burning of a photo and what not..not really sure what girls do to get over a guy..but hes showing the want for the girl with the sex on fire? could be wrong..ha as you all were ha Ahh, well that was part of my long-winded post. I don't think the video has anything to do with the song's message. It seems to me that there are a lot of folks trying to reconcile what they see in the video with what they hear in the song but I don't think you can. Song =/= video. That doesn't bother me too much I can see where other people would think it weird. And like I said before, I think it was the wrong video concept for this song, even though I like the concept itself. If that makes sense.  |

hey guys! : ) I just watched the vid for the first time.. i was watching it thinking "this is so weird".. however, i liked it.. which is saying something, haha, coz kol usually have crappy film clips im not too sure how it relates to the song, but the camera work is really beautiful . theres some lovely imagery in it. and can i just say: hel-lo nathan topless!!! mmmmm break me off some of that!  i thought the scene where they are holding down caleb was odd haha. but nice clip |

chelle.. Your interpretation is pretty much the same as mine... but put in more eloquent terms! Basically it's a rehab video for Caleb's alter ego... I'm glad I went through the comments this time before posting my interpretation because people would have thought I had stolen your ideas!

I love that the guys finally feel confident enough to express themselves visually. I like that they made themselves vulnerable and went for it fully. It reminds me of the passion of the YAYM days when they could give a f*ck. I'd rather see them take the risk of people thinking it's weird or silly, than put out a boring, self-conscious video where they barely move. I don't think the Beatles or the Stones ever worried about looking silly. The expression, or passion, is what I missed when I saw them at All Points, so this makes me really really excited. I completely agree, someone above said they'd like to see the band evolving, this is them evolving, its completely different. Caleb has said in numerous interviews that they have all grown in themselves and in confidence so they are trying new things and seeing how it goes. Personally, I think its great to see them all building in confidence and appreciating how great they are musically, lyrically etc. instead of always putting themselves down and saying things like "i cant believe people recognise us" etc. How boring would KOL be now if they just kept re-hashing the same old stuff from Y&YM over and over?? the water/book/chicken eating are all things that Nathan, Jared and Matt do separately. It could be that these are attempts to figure out how to help Caleb. Like Nathan might go for water/baptism in order to be cleansed so he can help Caleb with his demons without his own interfering. Jared might be reading the Bible/ancient text to see if there's any kind of ritual or rite they can use to get the demon out of Caleb. And - this is really out there but maybe Matt's eating the chicken to assume its power or if the Rooster does represent Caleb's alter-ego/demons, he could be eating it to kill/control it. And the fighting between Jared & Matt could be about them fighting over how best to help Caleb. Totally agree, i said sommat similar a few pages back. Thought i was over analysing it. Glad i'm not alone. |

OK, I've watched the video again and it definitely has a lot of religious imagery. Caleb's possessed and the rest of the band is trying to help him. The set looks like an old poultry factory to me. The water is about cleansing - washing sins or evil away through baptism. The book might not be a Bible but it definitely looks like an ancient text. The bird is definitely a rooster or chicken but I'm sure it was picked for its color and it's hard to tell hens and roosters apart. Either way, Jared chasing the bird was about trying to get control of Caleb's alter-ego, "Rooster". And Matt eating the chicken could mean that Caleb or they got control of the chicken/Rooster. The rest of the band doesn't seem to have anything to do with getting rid of the demon. Anyway, that's my best interpretation of the video so far. And I can see where that message would appeal to them. I think they picked the wrong song for that message though. A song about sex just doesn't match up with a video about demons. This video would have made so much more sense with "Black Thumbnail". They should have gone with an uber sexy video. Still, this is a departure for them and very interesting. And I agree with those that say it seems like a video for Americans - this is exactly the type of video I might expect from a major label rock band in the States. It's more common for us to have "arty" videos rather than performance videos. Either way, I'm glad they stepped out of their comfort zone and tried something different, even if it lead to unintentional lulz. Orrrrr....... I work in the art industry, where obscure metaphors are expected, so maybe I have a slightly different perspective than most. But people come on, what is so weird about this imagery? How obvious do you want it to be? I work in the film/tv industry so I'm used to wanky obscure metaphors too. I don't need a linear storyline, but something was definitely lost between the director's concept and its translation to screen! I'm glad they've pushed themselves too, and even if I don't think the end result is a complete success (other than on an, ahem, aesthetically pleasing level ), it was worth the try. Personally I like when directors like Patrick Daughters take the Kings at their best - i.e. performing - and manage to work that into a unique and visually interesting concept, like he did with Four Kicks or The Bucket. But that's just me! And for the boys complaining that this looks like a Maroon 5 video - Sophie Muller directed the videos for their biggest hits, so that's not a coincidence! |
