Argh barre chords. barre chords on my big fat ugly old acoustic. it's noit possible. it's so not possible. they lie. it's a conspiracy. there is a conspiracy afoot chaps and we must expose. barre chords on an acoustic is unnatural and on a nylon string acoustic no less. it hurts of the poor lil fingers. i feel your pain db. it's just all wrong. barre chords are all wrong. there must be another way...

Barr chords are do-able but not on a lot of acoustics. Sometimes its possible to make things easier by having the "action" adjusted basically having the bridge lowered so the strings are near the fretboard however this can produce knock on problems and really is a professional job and will cost quite a bit as the whole guitar may have to be modified to create the best sound. Some guitar shops offrer this service but its risky as they offer no gaurantees and could give you a playable guitar that sounds awful.
Electrics are a lot easier to set up and play because the action is lower and the strings are at a lower tension. Another thing to consider if you have small hands is a shorter scale guitar such as the Courtney Love Vista Venus.

If you play the guitar as much as i do you first finder shapes in to the strings soo it piss for me to do bar chords now absolutly no problem im gald ive been through learning bar chords it was agony getting it right.

I've only played three acoustic guitars that I can bar on anywear past the 5th fret one was a fender (Ithink it was called a mustang) and two ovations . Ovations are so good to play its just a same that they're so expensive.....I know they've got the applause range but they are quiite variable in quality. Most acoustics aren't actually designed for baring as most are designed for folk style and capos. My old telecaster So easy to play such a fine sound, but I had to sell it.

thank u for the info. i think i shall retire my guitar from those dreaded chords. i give up. big thumbs up to u rusty. that's so good that u have beaten those evil chords i am weak. they have defeated me lol oO i wants an electric mmmm but i also want a steel string acoustic mmmmm. i like to wander around the music shops and look at all the fine instruments. they r so new and shiny and pretty too. awh thats' so sad jane. although i have big issues with my ugly guitar i would be so upset if it was gone. it's lke my little baby.

I used to know this guy that barred with his thumbs. It was really fraky. But yeah me ickle tele. But I did make a prophet when I sold her so it wasn't all bad.
It is actually cheaper to get a decent playable electric and a practice amp than it is to get a decent playable steel strung. Though I catutuion against really cheap elecrics as they can be so heavy. My first electric was a black and white strat copy which played fine and sounded ok but if you played it standing up for more than about 10 mins the weight really started to kick in cos the body was plywood and weighed a ton well at least 3 times what a real strat weighs. Istarted getting real problems with my back and shoulder as I had to carry it around with me.
The squire strats and tele's iimho are the best starter guitars as they balance nicely and play quite eassily.

I don't think the Squires are too expensive new as guitars go ..... *goes to have a look* erm trying to work out exchange rates everything sounds so expensive in Oz$! Nope I've converted it into pounds and the price sounds a wee bit over the odds. $599 ouch! Me liike the fender designs though.... www.squierguitars.com/gear/gear.php
