Are there any lyrics that always stick with you, and just seem to haunt you? Just any really meaningful or powerful lyrics you can never forget? I love hearing what touches people in songwriting.

Does it have to be a kol-song? 'Cause these lyrics always give me shivers.
I wear this crown of thorns Upon my liar's chair Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair Beneath the stains of time The feelings disappear You are someone else I am still right here
I think it's originally from NIN, but I like Johnny Cash's version better.

i agree the johnny cashe version is much better
i love the whole of that song lyrically. brilliant
'what have i become, my sweetest friend? everyone i know goes away in the end. And you can have it all , my empire of dirt, i will let you down, i will make you hurt'
not really haunting, just emotive lyrics:
'i should be out there, claiming whats mine because any day i could die just like i was born and this bit in the middle is what im here for and i just want to fill it all with joy.' guillemots-blue would still be blue
also from that song 'and this is no palace, this place where i live, and i am no king, but i've got things to give'
i love a lot of the maccabees lyrics too.

ooh i didn't know this was to be applied to allllll music. i know you all probably think bright eyes is lame and emo, but the song Lua is one of my favorites ever:
I know that it is freezing but I think we have to walk I keep waving at the taxis; they keep turning their lights off But Julie knows a party at some actor’s west side loft Supplies are endless in the evening; by the morning they’ll be gone.
When everything is lonely I can be my own best friend I get a coffee and the paper; have my own conversations With the sidewalk and the pigeons and my window reflection The mask I polish in the evening, by the morning looks like shit.
And I know you have a heavy heart; I can feel it when we kiss So many men stronger than me have thrown their backs out trying to lift it But me I’m not a gamble you can count on me to split The love I sell you in the evening, by the morning won’t exist.
You’re looking skinny like a model with your eyes all painted black You just keep going to the bathroom always say you’ll be right back Well it takes one to know one, kid, I think you’ve got it bad But what’s so easy in the evening, by the morning is such a drag.
I’ve got a flask inside my pocket we can share it on the train If you promise to stay conscious I will try and do the same We might die from medication, but we sure killed all the pain But what was normal in the evening, by the morning seems insane.
And I’m not sure what the trouble was that started all of this The reasons all have run away but the feeling never did It’s not something I would recommend, but it is one way to live Cause what is simple in the moonlight, by the morning never is What’s so simple in the moonlight, now is so complicated What’s so simple in the moonlight, so simple in the moonlight

"By giving in, what am i giving up Am I losing way too much?"
it has really made me consider the possibilities when i face big decisons.
and modest mouse's "The View"
"as life gets longer, awful feels softer, well it feels pretty soft to me. and if it takes shit to make bliss, then i feel pretty blissfully."

In a Sweater Poorly knit by Mewithoutyou:in a sweater poorly knit and an unsuspecting smile little moses drifts downstream in the Nile a fumbling reply, an awkward rigid laugh I'm carried helpless by my floating basket raft your flavor in my mind swings back and forth between sweet rhan any wine and bitter as mustard greens light and dark as honeydew and pumpernickel bread the trap I set for you seems to have caught my leg instead! as you plow some other field try and forget my name see what harvest yields, and, supposing I'd do the same I planted rows of peas but by the first week of July they should have come up to my knees but they were maybe ankle high take the fingers from your flute to weave your colored yarns and boil down your fruit to preserves in mason jars but now the books are overdueand the goats are underfed the trap I set for you seems to have caught my leg instead! you're a door-without-a-key, a field-without-a-fence you made a holy fool of me and I've thanked you ever since. if she comes circling back we'll end where we'd begun like two pennies on the train track the train crushed into one or if I'm a crown without a king, if I'm a broken open seed if I come without a thing, then I come with all I need no boat out in the blue, no place to rest your head, the trap I set for you seems to have caught my leg instead! I do not exist only YOU exist I also LOVE the lyrics to Brand New's Limousine:"K, here's your ride. Get your petals out and lay them in the aisle Pretend you are God, and grow, And that it's your own day to wed We have found your man. He is drinking up. He's all-American, and he'll drive He has volunteered with grace to end your life. We'll tidy up It's sad to hold, but leave your shell to us You explode, you firefly, you tiny boat with oars, Feather oars The world tilts back and pours and pours And so, you satellite, you tidal wave, You’re a big surprise And I have one more night to be your mother" Her signal was interrupted. My baby's frequency not strong enough Her head in my hands and smiling. K, we will miss you but in time you'll get set up, And we will write" (Curtain) Hey, you beauty supreme. Yeah, you were right about me. But can I get myself out from underneath This guilt that will crush me In the choir, I saw our sad Messiah. He was bored and tired of my laments. He said, "I died for you one time, but never again" Well I love you so much, but do me a favor baby and don’t reply. Cause I can dish it out, but I can't take it. Sorry for such a long post

I love Modest Mouse, and The View's got really good lyrics actually. "If life's not beautiful without the pain, well I'd just rather never ever even see beauty again. " That's from The View aswell. And I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and, they both tell me that we're better than this." "That's what I'm waiting for, that's what I'm waiting for, that's what I'm waiting for aren't I?" "I've been beating my heart's record for speeding" And I looove Ocean Breathes Salty. Probably my favourite MM song.

I think Tool (Maynard) write some of the deepest lyrics going around. Most of their stuff is quite spirtual and you never knwo what they're goin on about. and most of it just anger at society's way of life. One of my favourites is from the song Pushit:
Pushing, shoving, pushing, shoving, me There's no loving there
Staring down the hole again Hands are on my back again Survival is my only friend Terrified of what may come
Remember i will always love you As i claw your fucking throat away It will end no other way It will end no other way
Quite deep ey?

my "most haunting" lyrics aren't necessarily like a personal emotional thing. they're from "gallow's pole" by odetta. think lynching and you're pretty much there:
hangman hangman slack your rope slack it for a while think i see my momma comin riding many a mile
...
momma did you bring me silver? momma did you bring me gold? did you come to see me hangin by the gallow's pole?
...
i didn't bring no silver i didn't bring no gold i come to see you hanging by the gallow's pole
maybe it's not your thing but i think the subject matter is pretty frightening.

I can quote way to many random snippets of songs because I use them to help me if I have writers block, so here are of a few random selections for what I consider my haunting:
*Hurt - seems like everyone agrees on that one
*"Mother, I tried, please believe me I'm doing the best that I can I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through I'm ashamed of the person I am
Isolation, Isolation, Isolation
But if you could just see the beauty These things I could never describe These pleasures a wayward distraction This is my one broken prize" - Isolation, Joy Divison
*"so please forgive what I have done no you can't stay mad at the setting sun cause we all get tired I mean eventually and there's nothing left to do but sleep
but spring came bearing sunlight those persuasive rays so I gave myself a few more days my salvation it came, quite suddenly when Justin spoke very plainly he said "Of course it's your decision, but just so you know, if you decide to leave, soon I will follow" - No Lies Just Love, Bright Eyes
*"Everybody cares, everybody understands Yes everybody cares about you Yeah, and whether or not you want them to It's a chemical embrace that kicks you in the head To a pure synthetic sympathy that infuriates you totally And a quiet lie that makes you want to scream and shout
So here I lay dreaming, looking at the brilliant sun Raining its guiding light upon everyone
For a moment's rest you can lean against the banister After running upstairs again and again From wherever they came to fix you in, but Always fair city's finest follow right behind You've got a pretty vision in your head A pencil full of poison lead And a sickened smile illegal in every town
So here I lay dreaming, looking at the brilliant sun Raining its guiding light upon everyone Here I lay dreaming, looking at the brilliant sun Raining its guiding light upon everyone
You say you mean well, you don't know what you mean Fucking oughta stay the hell away from things you know nothing about" - Everybody Cares Everybody Understands, Elliott Smith (well any Elliott Smith song really...)
Hmm looking back, all pretty dark subject matters...

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head And as I climb into an empty bed Oh well. Enough said. I know it's over - still I cling I don't know where else I can go Oh ... Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head See, the sea wants to take me The knife wants to slit me Do you think you can help me ? Sad veiled bride, please be happy Handsome groom, give her room Loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly (Though she needs you More than she loves you) And I know it's over - still I cling I don't know where else I can go Over and over and over and over Over and over, la ... I know it's over And it never really began But in my heart it was so real And you even spoke to me, and said : "If you're so funny Then why are you on your own tonight ? And if you're so clever Then why are you on your own tonight ? If you're so very entertaining Then why are you on your own tonight ? If you're so very good-looking Why do you sleep alone tonight ? I know ... 'Cause tonight is just like any other night That's why you're on your own tonight With your triumphs and your charms While they're in each other's arms..." It's so easy to laugh It's so easy to hate It takes strength to be gentle and kind Over, over, over, over It's so easy to laugh It's so easy to hate It takes guts to be gentle and kind Over, over Love is Natural and Real But not for you, my love Not tonight, my love Love is Natural and Real But not for such as you and I, my love Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
i liked the jeff buckley verion better than the smiths

All of Wicker Chair & The Runner.
I actually sent the Wicker Chair lyrics to my biological father during his first stay in rehab & told him that was how I felt about him.
Other than KOL, Led Zeppelin's "Going to California"
